i used to play Mortal Kombat II with friends who sucked as much as I did at fighting games. The ridiculousness of the special attacks, with our inept fighting abilities, coupled with how inebriated we were, led to some extremely entertaining and well choreographed fighting demonstrations. It was not uncommon to stop playing due to laughter.
Also Nes Hockey (i think thats what is called) is real fun to play with friends. I remember my buddy picked an all fat guy team against my well rounded team and it made for the funniest gameplay in a long time. by inebriated i meant stoned, if youre into that sort of thing

Comfy to me can almost be compared to a casual game. Comfy is a game that you can sit next to your tv, wrapped in a blanket with your favorite beverage at hand, and lay into a game for an extended time period and not get frustrated by. It cant be a game that you need an insane amount of focus on, it has to be an almost involuntary reaction. All that exists is you and the game. Transcending into the game that gives you a feeling of warmth and satisfaction. It is an odd thing to try to pinpoint, especially when everyone may have a different idea of what it is in their mind.

This pretty much. I suggested Sim City near the top of the thread because you may have to build like only 4 or so building then wait a year. You can drink and just sit there thinking of what you are going to do next.

I don't know how people going to be comfy with some of these games.

Harvest Moon is understandable as time work differently compare to later games and you basically have all night to do whatever you want. You can easily play during daytime then relax and pace yourself at night. Also it is just a generally peaceful game. Dragon Warrior on the other hand seem too grindy to be comfy, you may end up falling asleep to that out of boredom first.

It take all kinds and I know that but OP said /vr/-approved, not games that are only comfy to you.

We should really define what "comfy" is. Because some of these games are not fucking comfy.

A comfy game is a game that doesn't have any great challenge, instead focusing on a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.

Fucking Silent Hill is not comfy. Just because a game has one little part that has comfy music doesn't mean the entire game is comfy.

I'm gonna play Chrono Trigger for 10 hours just to get to one tiny little part in the game that might have a nice BGM, but the overall atmosphere is depressing.

Sounds real fucking comfy. Maybe I'll crush my nutsack with a hammer while listening to smooth jazz, bet that shit is hardcore comfy.

I like to play Hot Shots Golf, that shit is mad comfy. Almost any kind of golf game, really.

I disagree, comfy is a matter of opinion and can't be defined, any number of things can make a person think a game is comfy:music, story, nostalgia.
Some people might be comfy in Chrono Trigger even while fighting mutants in 2300 AD.

if you entirely misconstrue what the game is trying to do, then yeah, you can find ct comfy. But the game clearly has no intention being comfy.
Animal crossing? There's a game that's clearly built around being comfy. Everything about it is meant to be comfy, from its atmosphere to its model design. It's not up to opinion, it's up to the game. The game is comfy. CT is not comfy. It might have a single place where it does happen to comfy, and that area is meant to be comfy but that does not make the game comfy.
Keep in mind, doing stupid shit like turning rei from eva into your waifu is entirely misunderstanding the thing. You can force eva to be a lot nicer, a lot happier, a lot cleaner than it was but that's not what it actually is, or was. That's just your forced misinterpretation of it. What you force upon it in no way changes what it actually is, and the same is true for games. CT isn't comfy unless you force it to be and if you're forcing it to be comfy, then it isn't actually comfy.

I think comfiness is mostly related to nostalgia. I find particularly difficult games like realistic platformers (Another World, Flashback, Prince of Persia, Blacthorne, oh my god, Blackthorne) mainly because I enjoyed them so much in my youth as the sort of games I could just settle down with.

Ditto with CT. I don't find it depressing at all. Love and am deeply comforted by every second of it.

>thinking comfy has anything to do with the intent of the game

It's to do with the atmosphere it builds, regardless of designer intent. I find CT extremely comfy.

You're focusing too much on the discrete events portrayed in the game and not the overall atmosphere and world it constructs.

>> No.975501

>>975401
the atmosphere is built by developer intent. The only reason why intent would miss the product by a significant margin in a medium as simple as video games is if the developer was incompetent.
although to be honest I don't remember anything about CT specifically, except that the start was a happy-go-lucky party and some vague memories of over-arching plot events. My main point really is that games don't become comfy out of nothing, they're comfy due to specific design choices chosen to be comfy. I don't actually recall being saddened in any significant manner by ct, whether by poor design or because that was never its true intention, I don't know.

>The game offers a lot of choice in respect to how individual players wish to play. The main focus of the game is entering the tower and destroying its denizens, collecting treasure and monster eggs to hatch into familiars. Each monster has hidden spells, unique traits, and abilities. But an interesting side mission is the improvement of the town of Monsbaiya. With his acquired riches, Koh can finance the building of a theatre, hospital, racing track, casino, bowling alley, and gym. Some buildings allow the appearance of specific love interests (such as the Hospital making way for Cherrl to appear and the library making Mia available), while others offer mini-games and the ability to acquire currency at a faster rate. Koh can also improve the furnishings and decorate his home.

Wily Wars has a quirk where they programmed in every Robot Master weapon to work in Mega Man1-3, and you can access it with a Game Genie.

>play MM2 with nothing but MM1 weapons
>same with MM2 or MM1 weapons in MM3
>finish that long Rush Jet section in Doc Robot's Needleman stage with the Magnet Beam or Item-2

Beyond the Beyond

It was basically Golden Sun Zero, same team, same composer, even some of the dungeons are the same.

People love to bash it out of hand though, I bet 90% of the people hating on it never played it.

Yeah you can tell just by the cover that Golden Sun took a lot of inspiration from the game. Main char is basically Isaac with black hair, girl is Mia with blonde hair, guy is Garet with pepper hair.

If you're a Golden Sun fan I highly advise you give Beyond The Beyond a spin. It's one of the most critically panned games out there, but I think if you love Camelot's other games you will appreciate BTB.

Most of the reason people hate it is the difficulty. There's a high encounter rate, long dungeons, and brutal bosses.

Well, yeah, that pretty much describes Golden Sun as well. Hence why I said if you liked GS, you'd like BTB.

It's not God's gift to gaming, but I think it's an underrated gem, oft-overlooked as it crawls around in the shadow of FF7. GS got a decent fanbase, and I think it's a shame BTB is so overlooked, when it's about on-par with GS quality wise.

Oh boy, its that guy who loves unredeemably terrible RPGs. I'd engage you on why exactly both games/series are terrible, but frankly I don't remember BTB that well aside from Samson and his stupid curse and how stupid Tont looked. In GS's case, I gleefully submit this link to an LP of it which does a great job of deconstructing GS and TLA and explaining why it is so terrible:

What makes a game "comfy" anyway?

>> No.984381

>>984362
Relaxed, not frantic or frenetic. I'd consider much of Chrono Trigger to be cosy, as it's not all grim combat. Pilotwings is cozy, too.

>> No.985106

Earthbound is pretty relaxing and enjoyable. Certainly doesn't take itself super serious. I love parts like the coffee break and going to Snow Wood. Mario Paint is pretty cool too if you know how to make some pretty silly things, or just want to play gnat attack.

After reading that LP, I don't know, he made some good points. I remember playing it when I was younger and having a blast, I wonder if it'll still hold up today.
