Why is it called Dinosaur Island if there are only 3 dinosaurs in the entire game (4 if you consider Yoshi, but they live on their own island)?

Why is there a sweets theming with some of the locations when they're just generic plains, mountains etc and for some they didn't even bother with the name (forest)?

I know it's in like two NSMB games and Wario Land 1 (not really a Mario game and for some reason I don't find it to be obnoxious in this particular game) as well but imagine if this became a staple. Holy fucking shit this would suck, wouldn't it? This is such a non-Mario thing

That's 2 more than what you said, but anyway, I think it's fine that way, if the game was too focused on dinosaurs, it'd feel a bit strange as a main Mario game. This way it still is mostly classic Mario enemies with some dino enemies here and there to fit the theme of Dinosaur Land, but nothing exaggerated.
By the way, speaking of dinos, it's curious that both SMW and Jurassic Park book came out the same day (JP in november 20, 1990, and SMW in november 21, but in Japan, so that means it was still 20th in the west)

Fun fact I discovered recently, maybe it's common knowledge but still want to share: if you beat the Sunken Ghost Ship level after you've already finished it once (and opened the gate to Bowser's Valley), the overworld map music will stop when you go back to the map after the level. I guess it's because it triggers a command to stop the map music for the bowser gate opening, but since that doesn't happen anymore once it's already opened, the map music just stops. It's kind of a nice novelty to go around the map without music, but the SFX still work, so you will hear the "beep!" sound when Mario moves from level to level, or the splash sound the fish makes when he jumps as you cross the bridges.

A large enough enclosed space can have its own weather. Valley of Bowser looks like its drawing on that old adventure movie cliche of the hollow Earth. It was used as recently as Godzilla vs Kong where the interior of the planet was home to prehistoric monsters. Since Mario World is set in Dinosaur Land and uses old school ragtime music throughout, it also stands to reason old adventure serials were also an influence.

Similarly, I always wondered about pic related.
It seems to also be some kind of underworld place, but you can still see the sky, and the levels aren't all underground (like they are in SMW's Valley of Bowser). I'm guessing this is some place hidden within the big mountains in the main Yoshi's Island, but not actually underground.

Literally every level is food themed:
>Rice Beach
>Mt. Teapot
>Sherbet Land
>Stove Canyon
>SS Tea Cup
>Parsley Woods
>Syrup Castle
Sherbet Land and Syrup Castle in particular are named after sweets, not to mention the fact that tea is often made sweet and rice is an ingredient in various sweets and desserts.

>> No.9693925

NTA, but Chocolate Island is mostly dark brown terrain that looks like it could be chocolate, plus the brown lava that looks like choco milk.
Anyway, I don't see it as a negative that the name themes are just vague and not 100% represented. It's just an extra fun thing, nothing to get mad about.
It seems like something fun the devs thought of in the process of making the game, instead of doing something systematically to meet some kind of criteria in a soulless way.
