And it's getting retconned in this very year. They finally changed DK's design back to the original in the Mario movie. I wouldn't be surprised if this is because Nintendo has been rumoured to work on a 3D Donkey Kong game for a while now.

Yes they did. The movie design is like half way between the Rare version and Miyamoto's design. The proportions are closer to the original design and the face has a 'goofier' look to it.

Technically, this isn't a redesign as much as the creation of an entirely new character.
Rare's Donkey Kong is the son of the original Donkey Kong from the 1981 arcade game.
They're different characters, so they naturally have different designs. Not a flex.

I don't know any of the details. But here is the leaked demo of Super Donkey.
https://youtu.be/OuPAHU9qOT8

The main character looks more like Rayman. But people have found image related unused sprite in the ROM file, which could imply that DK was suppose to be the main character. It would make sense, given that the character in this demo can hang from ledges, and even uses a projectile weapon shaped like a little barrel. But this demo also looks like it was later turned into Yoshi's Island. So many sprites look like they could fit into that game.

You can tell this was the moment that sent Shiggy spiraling down into madness. He hated Rare, and the moment that Yamauchi couldn't hold him back, he made Nintendo get rid of them. But even that wasn't enough; he did everything to make Rare dissolve and get reduced to a 3rd grade developer of Kinect games. His paranoia is why he established the Mario mandate, to keep anyone from having control over his IPs like they did with DK. His mistrust to others had a toll on his mental wellbeing, so he went from making SMB to shitting out turds like Wii Music. Truly sad sight.

I can't find the quotes right now. But I know in the past, Shigeru did criticise the look of the 3D renders in DKC and Killer Instinct. I don't think he was a fan of the CG look back then. I think he made some comment on how he didn't like the look of the colours. I don't remember. but, for what it was worth, Rare did set the tone for every Nintendo game that came later. It was unique and a new thing to see box art and promo art made up of 100% SGI rendered models back in 1994 when Donkey Kong Country was released. I can't think of another game that did it first. The game was such a big hit, that developers worldwide were purchasing SGI machines and switching over to CG. But by the N64 era, the CGI look was the norm for almost every N64 game from Nintendo. Rare's DK became the definitive Donkey Kong throughout the N64 years. It wasn't until Retro got the franchise, was when you saw an updated redesign.

>> No.9684329

I feel like the DKC designs are actually kind of really garish and bad. Am I allowed to admit that? What's with the fucking monkeys with human hair? The whole 90's "cool" aesthetic didn't age that well either. Why does Donkey Kong look like he's about to rape me?
Rare nailed their cartoon aesthetic with Banjo. DKC is just a little "off" looking.

>What's with the fucking monkeys with human hair?

The hair was something that they added to the DK2 promo renders. The original Donkey Kong Country was rendered using SGI Challenge machines, and I have a feeling that DKC2 moved over to newer hardware that was capable of producing fur or hair shaders. Rare's CG artists loved to use that fur shader effect whenever they could.

>>9684329
>The whole 90's "cool" aesthetic didn't age that well either. Why does Donkey Kong look like he's about to rape me?

By the time they got around to Banjo, they had better hardware and were more versed in 3D modeling. The original Donkey Kong Country 1 renders were typical for the time. Donkey Kong has the old ball joint method of attaching shoulders, meaning that they aren't actually attached to the model. The characters in general, are a lot more primitive. This came out before the movie Toy Story. I think the fur was added to hide the seams for DKC2.

DKC was so well documented that it was stated multiple times that the game and promo renders were made on the same SGI challenge machine. I am not sure if DKC 2 was developed using the same hardware. But I don't think it was. I could only imagine that the first game sold so well that Rare just splurged on newer SGI machines. I could be wrong.

I think it was mostly Rare flexing their muscles on what they could do with SGI workstations. The Nintendo version of rare's DK model didn't use the fur shading effect and went with the DKC1 version with bump mapping or normal maps. Image related is CG art from Mario Kart 64, which came out in 1996.

Mario Tennis render for the N64 game from 1999. This one doesn't use any fur/ hair shading effects either. This game was developed by Camalot Software Planning, maybe they were just using the same DK model seen in Mario Kart 64? This game features DK Jr. who is suppose to be the father of Donkey Kong seen in the RareWare games. You never see DK jr. in the Rare games (off limits?), but it is always implied via Cranky Kong, as he would call DK his no good grandson.

>It's not some kind of conspiracy. It's literally to connect resemblance between character and voice.

I think this trend can be traced back to Disney's Aladdin, where the animators heavily based the look and attitude of the Genie on Robin Williams. I know Disney was boating about it. How they tried to bring as much of Robin Williams into the character as possible. It did work for that movie. It was a trend that continued with CG movies. Where the actors mannerisms and personality would get imposed into the character design. yeah, it is still a thing. I can kind of see the Jack Black influence in Bowser. But I think Illumination did a good job keeping it to a minimum.
