Why does it look like they had to shop the game into the photo? Was having him hold up the actual box not in the budget or something?

Boxart probably wasn't finished yet when they took the photo.

Interesting to me how they got the name wrong on the advert, it's supposed to be ガイアレス, lit. "Gaia Res" short for "Gaia Resurrection". Alternatively it might be "Gaia Restore" or "Gaia Restoration" given the plot is about restoring a polluted earth into a livable planet. Still, it's pretty clear from the pronunciation that it it wasn't supposed to be "Guy Ares" or whatever the advert said.

For another example of English title being just misread transliteration of the Japanese one, see "Dimahoo".

Interestingly, the art for the naked anime girl and the space ship are separate, with the ship taking various spots trying to cover her nudity.
Pretty much every different instance of the japanese art has different placements, if we count the game box cover, manuals, japanese magazine promos, various posters, etc.
Even more interesting is that there is one instance where they placed the ship completely away, not covering her breasts in the official TELENET Users Gallery Vol 16, a small 16 page, subscription magazine (Now ultra defunt, ultra rare)

Gaiares is one of my favorite Genesis games. In most ways it's a typical shmup of the day but it's gimmick is that instead of upgrading weapons through random powerups, you suck the abilities out of various enemies to change your attack and certain ones are more useful in some sections than others so it's a game of what to go for when. Then on top of that, the music is awesome and the stages are tons of fun. One pretty much feels like they wanted to make a Castlevania shmup for a level where you dodge giant axes abd spears and shit coming at you and then fight robo-Death. It's a good time.

It is, but originally I did not. Back then, having already enjoyed Gradius/Life Force/etc. on the NES and the game reviewed extremely well (like 8/9/9/9 from EGM and 5 explosion faces from Gamepro), it was the next game I suggested my uncle get for my cousins. We all didn't think it was that great, since the ship speed was either too slow or too fast, but not a happy middle. Continually shifting gears while shooting seems unwieldly and made the game really difficult. WE all liked it but obviously not that much, so I got this one passed down to me, but I really grew to love the music, cutscenes artstyle, boss designs, and TOZ mechanics.

is this a modded nomad or a stock system? The screen looks better than mine. I have to say though, this game has me hooked and I don't even like shmups that much. It's pretty kickass.
