I'm generally fine with them as long as they're on a non-region locked system (so nobody's being deprived of the original) and they add new content.
My favorite game like that is easily Elite Beat Agents, which is arguably better than the game it's a localization of.

As much as I love Yoshi and Kirby and agree that at the time they were more iconic than anime girls, but who knows what would've happened if they stuck with the anime girls. They could've became big-name Nintendo/Sega characters.
I also think going from Yoshi to Pokemon hurt it's brand identity or some shit. But it's all hypothetical, who knows. I just wish Nintendo would make a new Panel De Pon, Dr. Mario blows in comparison yet they keep making Dr. Mario's
