We all love Disney, or at least most of us do, it's something that pretty much every kid out there grows up with and either becomes a huge fan or is at least fond of it looking back. Of course Disney isn't an entity focused on bringing joy or anything like that, though many people there had that intention back then, and maybe even today, but still, a company has a single true goal, making money and staying on top, and a way to do that is expand into different markets to make more money somewhere else. In the late 80's and early 90's Disney truly caught on to video games and their growth, and we got many gems thanks to that.

I'm mostly familiar with SEGA's Illusion series, which is what I grew up with, on my good old Mega Drive, though that series also had plenty of releases on both Game Gear and Master System, which I've played now that I'm all grown up and thoroughly enjoyed for what they were. I didn't grow up with just Mickey and Donald though, there were also tons of video games based on Disney films, like The Little Mermaid and The Lion King, which are the ones I remember most fondly, though there were many others like Aladdin. Disney's video games kept being made when the jump to 3D happened, on PS1 and N64, and quality was still good.

Nowadays though... we've got Kingdom Hearts and not much else, so if you're not into that series then there's not much to see, back then when Disney would put out a new film it was a matter of time before we got a video game adaptation, regardless of how good or bad they were, we had them at least. Of course, this could all change with the new Disney Illusion Island, for Nintendo Switch, it looks like a modern World of Illusion and I'm really into that, hopefully it lives up to the name. Anyways, what are your main experiences with Disney video games? How do you feel about them overall? What were your personal disappointments and your favorites?

To this day I dream of a full 3D Talespin game where you can walk and fly around Cape Suzette. I know it will never happen, since it's one of the IP's Disney leaves in the vault, and they'll sue the shit out of any attempt at a fan-game.

This was me as well. Always thought most of the "Disney Renaissance" era movies were gay and i only owned two, the fox and the hound & lion king. Rented a lot of don bluth stuff from the library back then like all dogs go to heaven and my parents would sometimes grab stuff for me with the mentality of "lol its animated, its for kids" which is how i ended up watching stuff like cool world and Wizards at an age i probably shouldn't have.

My mom is like that. Should we ever watch an animated musical, she's cringing instantly.
I think musical numbers are okay, never had an issue with them.

It's usually the romantic/flirting scenes that make me cringe.
Like, when there is a pure-hearted, but not so bright protagonist is getting hots for the girl or vice versa and they are dealing with their feelings for each other awkwardly while supporting characters are going "OOOHHH THEY LIKE EACH OTHER NOW KISS"

Sorry but it looks nothing like World of Illusion.
More like a discount Rayman Origins aimed for toddlers. But I'm still glad they remember about Ilusion series and brought it back in some sort of way.

One game that really disappointed me was Epic Mickey. There was a big hype surrounding its release and people were calling it the revival of 3D platforming and all that stuff. Then it turned out to be a bland, boring and short game. It's rightfully forgotten now.

The 16 bit era was obviously the golden age for Disney games. Top Japanese vidya companies all took a swing at creating unique and fun adventures. Guess we were just lucky Disney was so popular in Nippon in the 90s.

>> No.9663370

By the way, doesn't the Mickey Mouse copyright expire soon? Or did the Disney lobby succesfully for a special copyright law in American congress?

Never cared about the movies but I loved the comics as a kid, and liked some of the animated shows.
Maybe it's mostly a European thing, but the comics, both from American and our local authors, were popular in the 80s and 90s. I especially loved the Carl Barks and Don Rosa duck comics and how the Donald Duck Sega games took cues from their adventure stories.

I remember that boomers were still into Disney during the 80s and early 90s so I received Mickey Mania and loved it despite how brief it was, it always seemed entertaining because it was such an animated platformer. Always respected Eurocom for that reason alone, but was disappointed with Lion King and Hercules on PS1. Epic Mickey is a modern classic that should be considered on par with Kingdom Hearts.

a Barks-Rosa influenced Donald Duck game would be amazing, maybe a platforming RPG that incorporates some of their storylines.

It really is. The comics are still influential in the US but almost no one has really read them either. Weird to realize that the entire duck subgenere" of cartoons in the 80's/90's, like Darkwing Duck, probably only existed because the Donald Duck cartoons were popular everywhere else

Agreed, I really hope it does well regardless, it's been a long time since we had a video game with Mickey and Donald besides Kingdom Hearts, I miss the 90's when it was more common, hopefully this does well and motivates Disney to keep making stuff like this.

Here in Netherlands Donald Duck comics are still hugely popular. The weekly magazine still has lots of readers. Many of those comics were created here but I remember Denmark being home to most Donald Duck creators.

Supermarkets and bookstores also sold separate series in pseudo-hardcover named after main characters. One of them was 'Dagobert Duck' (Dutch name of Scrooge McDuck). When I was a boy I was blown away how good the comics from this series were especially compared to the weekly magazine. The first them I read one I was so surprised how different it was. Only later I found out the 'Dagobert Duck' series were all translated works of Don Keno Rosa.

You can add Finland to that list. It was/is pretty huge here too. Literally every kid in the 90s and 00s had these big binders full of donald duck comics and a subscription. It came every wednesday straight to your door. Don Rosa even made this big story about our national epic and finnish things in general.

They're an empire of lowest common denominator trash these days, but from the late 1980s to the early 2000s they contracted out a bunch of games based on their classic properties, and they're mostly all very good. There's also the Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comic books themselves from that era, and they're genuinely really good.

It's a very different thing from the Disney of today, no doubt they were a soulless megacorp back then too, but it's like they managed to accrue divisions with some soul in them for a time.

I didn't grow up with Castle of Illusion, just QuackShot, but knowing that the team behind one of my favorites had made Castle of Illusion before it, and World of Illusion after it, I had to try them all out... in the end Castle of Illusion became one of my favorite SEGA Mega Drive titles, it just did everything right for a licensed mascot platformer, and even more than that, you could feel all of the love its creators had for Disney and its history. I've been wanting to try out Castle of Illusion's 8-Bit port for quite some time now, and even though I did play it before, I'm only now giving it a proper playthrough. One thing that immediately turned me off, which was in the original aswell, is limited continues, though you have 9 of them here, you still can get a Game Over, being sent back to the title screen, which I always dislike. Anyways, at first things just weren't clicking, its changes to how it played were welcome, like the grabbing and throwing of things, but something felt off, it just wasn't as fun to play and level design felt cheap sometimes... still, I kept pushing and now I'm at a spot where I can clear the first few levels easily and while gaining a lot of Tries, I think this is what so many love about retro video games, how something feels so difficult at first, and then suddently you're good at it by simply playing more, I'm having fun.

Fuck Disney. If you still like Disney you're a fucking moron. Ive gotten to the point of a full boycott. I won't even watch the old movies. They are disgusting as a company and have single handedly destroyed many beloved franchises that were once great American standards in their respective genres.

OP is a disneyfag but the rest of us are only talking about games that are literally 30 years old. For a long time Disney vidya has been Kingdom Hearts + shovelware, and they turned into shovelware before Kingdom Hearts 1 was released.

An update, I've managed to actually complete it, both its Master System and Game Gear versions, because I wanted to see if I could find any differences, they were there, but barely noticeable and relevant at all. I'm glad I've played through this, it's not as good as its original 16-Bit version, not at all, but it's still excellent in its own way, especially for the hardware. I love the art style they went with, while the 16-Bit version went with a more iconic Mickey look, this went with a more classic one, with the completely black eyes, similar to his first few appearences. Also, while it keeps the stomping mechanic, it adds the whole element of grabbing and throwing objects, and it's used so well... I'm impressed with how much fun I had playing this, the level design is superb for a 2D platformer, it looks nice, sounds nice, controls nice, it's all you can really ask for. I did struggle a lot on the final level, but as usual with retro video games... I got good at it by simply playing that very level over and over when losing, and eventually mastered it, only the final boss still gives me trouble, a lot in fact, but I can do it after a while. I loved it.
