I'm trying to change the sprite metadata of an object in an NES game. This is something I've done in several NES games before, but in this game I can't figure out where it pulls the data from.

In the other games I did it, you could always easily find the metadata in the RAM and then find the same data pulled as is from the ROM, but that's not how it works here (I found the data in the RAM but there is nothing like it in the ROM) because the same sprites aren't always located in the same part of the tiletable. For instance the same bottom left sprite of the object may be located at A1 in the tiletable in this level, but at 76 in this other level.

Considering how objects are handled in this game I think several objects may use the same base metadata too.

Any tips how to handle this? I tried setting break points to that meta data in the RAM but I just get lost in the meanderings of the sprite writing routines.

i mean once you have the breakpoint in RAM that has the values you want, just keep setting them further back in the debugger / code until you find where it pulls that data from. i don't know what else to tell you man.
if you're dealing with some sort of compression scheme, it could get very messy...

Ok, in that case, i would change one letter or something insignificant and run a DIF program like vbindiff against the original, and see if you can get a handle on what the compression is doing.
Hopefully it's just a simple algorithm. There are examples like Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road where there are checksum routines to verify the data: In that case you're basically fucked. But you might have a tough journey ahead of you, good luck and godspeed.

isn't that around 2000 or so? i would go with XP unless you really need the 9x family, it feels and works way better than 98, still compatible with relatively recent programs, and the networking support to your actual PC should actually work and not drive you insane lol

I made an uncensoring patch for Dragon Warrior IV (NES), it reverts back all the things that were changed for the US version (everything that's on the TCRF page https://tcrf.net/Dragon_Warrior_IV_(NES)/Regional_Differences#Graphical_Differences)

Anyone feel like testing it? Considering it wasn't as simple hacking as copy pasting from one version to the other and I had to change some definitions, and in some cases more sprites than initially may be loaded, I would feel better if the whole game was tested. Maybe I'll just go through everything with cheats if nobody wants to

Manually.
I added ASM instructions to the Style Congifurator to get the highlights i wanted.
I also use the definable keyboard shortcuts to launch a .BAT file which compiles a project, checks if the compilation was successful, and if so, launch the emulator and game i'm working on.

do you though? i mean i just keep the opcode table open in a tab. i like having the cycle counts available so i know how much CPU i'm burning, and having it laid out makes me think of more efficient ways to do things.
it don't really matter with modern code but it sure as fuck does on retro hardware imo.

Ah fuck you caught me lol, and you are totally right. It's bad. I just keep setting keyboard shortcuts for whatever batch script for whatever project i'm working on.
I'm lazy with GIT too even though i have it fucking installed.
