I just finished Silent Hill 2. I'm really bad at these puzzle and survival kind of games and i found the first one challenging, but this one was so ridiculously easy, I didn't even have to think to solve the puzzles, it kinda made me feel disappointed, even though I really liked the story.

>what's your favorite ps2 game?
Toss up between something like Fatal Frame 2 or maybe one of the Ratchet & Clank titles

PS2 games are just too damn expensive, and I have to always get even used/ no case copies resurfaced. I'm not a collector, so I don't care about the condition, but having to return shit because some asshole left so many dents in it that it can't be played anymore is so disrespectful. I have no intention of trying to track down Kuon or Rule of Rose. Those prices are ridiculous. PS2 has a great library I'm just not super into sitting down and playing through stuff right now.

the warriors, PS2 was the only console where the 3D beat ‘em up was a thing and was doing it’s thing. PS1 had fighting force which i feel is overhated but underwhelming, it had potential such a shame it became a metal gear knock off type thing. but back on topic, rockstar kicked ass with bully and the warriors i’m going to try out more of picrel next. it’s crazy because it was doing an small but open world 3D beat ‘em up months before Yakuza and like a year before bully.

I went back to SoulCalibur II, because it loads the matches much faster. If you wanna have some fightan' real fast and just jump in the game, you can do that with SCII. SCIII is great, but the loading times between every single battle are atrocious compared to SCII. SCII is already a great, balanced fighting game and graphically is still on point when standing next to SCIII, so I "rolled back" to it and that's my SoulCalibur of choice nowadays. Second one, for faster loading times.

Anything you want to have shortcuts to on the system menu should run from the memory card, I think. In my experience trying to start apps from a system menu shortcut can make the system lock up if the HDD has to spin up first.

If you're concerned about memory card space you shouldn't really be using your FMCB card for game saves anyway. Best to just load up all your homebrew onto one card and use another one for saves (or a virtual card on the HDD)

>> No.9653089

>>9653081
I see. Thanks. I definitely wasn't going to use the FMCB card for saves files but homebrew only. I'm fairly certain it is possible to have a shortcut to an elf that's on the HDD but the bit about it maybe crashing if the drive takes too long just convinced me to go the memory card route.

Easy way to test this is to put in PS1 games or CDs and see if they work. If they work then the DVD laser is dead/dying and you need to replace it. You can try adjusting the potentiometer on the DVD laser but that's a band aid at best and might not work at all. Replacing the laser on the slim model is easy but you need a soldering iron to remove the anti static solder point. See pic related.

Aside from transfer speeds, are there any inherent differences between using HDL Batch Installer (which uses the HDL Dump protocol) and using HDL Game Installer over LAN (which uses TCP). Is there any difference in outcome when the installation process is finished? My PS2 is all set up and ready to go and the reason I'm asking is, I just don't really feel like taking out the HDD repeatedly. I don't intend to add a big batch of games all at once. Doing it over network transfer would be a lot more convenient in that regard (kind of scared of blowing that infamous fuse honestly)

So HDL Batch Installer is unrealiable in your experience as well? I thought that's the one tool most people recommend these days (since it's still actively supported as well I'm guessing).

What do you use to transfer games then? I have a docking station connected to my PC at all times that I could easily plug the PS2 HDD into anytime I want to install a game. But my network adapter is also an ethernet capable original. Preferably I'd like to use that method for installation and not take out the thing every time. The connector just seems rather flimsy. Maybe I should just amass all the games first and do it all at once, huh?

Never even knew that was a thing, I remove my HDD every now and again to add games but I'm pretty sure the ideal solution is to add everything all at once. Since it's not like you're going to defrag a PS2 HDD without completely wiping everything off of it first it's best to plan out and just put everything you want on it at one time instead of adding games, deleting them, adding more, etc. It sounds a lot less convenient to do it this way, and in a way it is, but it's kind of what PS2 HDDs expect.

Basically the tale goes like this, even if your PS2 is just in standby mode - LEDs on the front panel still lit up that is - you run a high risk of blowing some tiny fuse inside either your PS2 or your network adapter which you'll then have to replace with some soldering work. Not sure if it's in the console or the adapter right now.

Anyway I just found this
https://israpps.github.io/HDL-Batch-installer/FAQ/FAQ.html
>The old hdl server has been broken for years. OPL replaced internal HDL Server with NBD Server (by @bignaux), the advantage of NBD server is that there's no need to change anything on my program to make it compatible

>Just setup NBD server and the program should recognize the HDD

>if you don´t know how to do it, take a look at the OPL readme
https://github.com/ps2homebrew/Open-PS2-Loader#introduction

I'll look into it. Not in a hurry. Honestly the entire reason I'm being so annoying about this whole thing is that I don't have enough harddrive space left on my desktop right now to download all the games I want on there first. Just all HDDs are pretty much full.

>>9661594
>>9661612
On the topic of deleting games. I read it's not really recommended to delete any games since apparently each game gets placed inside it's very own harddrive partition. Crazy. It's probably best to go as big as you can with the HDD for this reason alone.

Using it over network though? If so, does it require another tool to be set up to perform that function, e.g. NBD Server?

Yes, over the network. You run the sever on your PS2 and the client on your PC. Then you pick the games to install.

Yes, it makes it a pain in the ass to add games back after that, but iirc hdl dump can deal even with split partitions. Haven't noticed any issues yet.

lol I have another, different problem now and I haven't played a single game yet. In the forums they say it's generally recommended to go with the latest BETA of OPL and so I did. Unfortunately they seemingly introduced some big issues for internal HDD users. So I'm having to revert back to 1.1.0 stable now before having used the damn thing even once. I've never seen such a cluster fuck of a forum like ps2-home in my entire life before and seems indicative of the entire scene if I'm to be honest. But I'm really complaining. It's great that this stuff exists and setting it up is half the fun - yeah, right.

Got that. I'm running SPCH-39004, official MC & network adapter with SATA mod. HDD is a brand new Seagate Barracuda 1TB ST1000DM010 which is very compatible according to:
https://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=list&v_modelnum=ST1000DM010

So far I have no problems to report. I don't even think the fan is that loud although this particular model is said to be one of, if not the, loudest among all phats - a trade off I was willing to make since it's allegedly the sturdiest revision too. The only slight problem I have on the hardware side is that the disc tray (which I'm not really using) doesn't open and close as smoothly as I would like. It's sort of stuttery even after cleaning. My guess is that the rubber ring is just shot. Should try to find a replacement.

Side note: Western Digital hard drives seem to have really spotty compatibility with the PS2 in general, which I find rather curious since I've never had anything but positive experiences with them - at least in the PC realm. I wonder why that is. Think I read that at some point in the distant past their connectors wouldn't even properly allign when trying to connect them to a PS2's network adapter. Maybe that was IDE standard though, not sure.

It is better than people think due to the ability to freely write tons of different cheats for individual titles. I beat RE1, Xenogears, and MGS1 on popstarter. There's some slowdown here and there, but there was slowdown on the original system too, so it's not terribly jarring. But yes, some popular games still don't work out of the box without specific work arounds or cheats. Like FFVII's battle screens are black, with only the UI being visible.

MGS has shitton of slowdowns, even the starting area runs at 15fps and its actually really smooth feeling game on real hardware.

If you have a SCPH-500xx phat and you're ntsc-u you can use mechapwn and play burned discs perfectly.

Use genuine non cmc taiyo yuden (marked as jvc on the packet) or another brand like verbatim cd-r that doesn't lag on fmvs (might have to test some quality cd-r before you find the right type, as I said the gold standard is no stuttering on the fmvs). First when you get the iso downloaded check the md5 against redump. Use iso burn, set md5 reporting to on in the settings, and compare the burned disc md5 to the original on redump as well.

The games play perfectly this way, well fairly well when it comes to pre 75000x. Popstarter is a piece of shit and waste of time. You're better off emulating at that point.

From what I've read an SSD will not give you any real performance improvements in games compared to a hard disk. It might help with the speed of some homebrew menus. But that's really only an issue if you've made specific mistakes in the set up process of your drive. Or if you're constantly adding new games one by one and then want to rescan for the new titles instead of doing one big badge. SSDs probably also offer slightly lower temps, power draw and are ofc quieter - but most HDDs aren't that loud anyway.

Just make sure to create the +OPL partition on your HDD right after formatting the drive and don't any games before that. Otherwise OPL menus will allegedly run slower the more titles are placed between MBR and +OPL. Because every game gets put into its own partition. Also, never delete games off the hard drive.

Ebay makes the US market seems rather pricey yeah, PAL units are still relatively cheap starting at around 35 eurobucks at the lowest. Realistically you should be prepared to pay up around 50 though for a PAL - in which case it should come with a controller, power and video cables as well at least.

Sometimes smaller bundles with a handful of games aren't the worst either. Of course you don't really want those games but you know, let the pictures decide. You wanna make sure you buy from someone who has a single unit for sale and that it looks to be in good condition. Buying from those mass flippers is always a gamble because usually they don't show pictures of the actual unit you're bidding on. This also means you won't know which hardware revision you're gonna end up with.

I honestly don't think I can go back to the ps2 GTA trilogy after playing them on pc for so many years. Vehicles control better with a controller but kb+m destroys it for on foot.
