What are the best rereleases of retro games that added new stuff?

>people praise the original and hype up the release of Ultra
>play Ultra
>really whatever basic Kirby game, just with lots of abilities and good combat
>beat it and forget
is that what the whole hype was all about?

>> No.9648341

Just ignore Kirby autists. It's the shittiest series there is relative to its hype level. Only the first two are ok because they are streamlined and focused, but even then you must be 5 to enjoy them

no, don't get me wrong, I like most Kirbies, including "le bad" ones like DL3 and 64. I even like Canvas Curse a lot, I think it's extremely underrated. but KSSU was just whatever, too short. hell, I think I liked the NES one more

>those backwards ass controls you can't configure
Inferior to the SNES original.

The Xbox 360 versions of Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie are my favorite way to play them.

People dislike DL3 and 64? News to me, I think they're pretty good. My favorite Kirby game is Mass Attack, though. Kirby had a good run on the DS.

>shitty d-pad movement in a game designed for analog movement
>camera is way too zoomed in to compensate for being on a handheld screen
>stars have roadblocks arbitrarily added to them to justify the existence of the other characters
>characters are horribly imbalanced
>no reason to play as Wario outside of his specific stars
>Luigi breaks all the difficulty of an already east game
>no reason to not just always play Yoshi and use the character hats so you dont have to keep going back and forth switching characters
>washed out color palettes
>audio is crunched to all hell to accommodate the shitty DS speakers

The only good part of Mario 64 DS are the added minigames (i.e not playing Mario 64)

should really be the standard for every rerelease/remake ever. they even went the extra mile and added SoTN

>> No.9648938

>>9648935
Yes, it really should. I can't think of a single contemporary remake that included the original. Reminder that RE2 Remake charged you more money to use the original soundtrack.

Each level has a unique and memorable mechanic/twist
>world map with hidden areas
>metroidvania style
>time attack
>copy essence deluxes
It's a kino idea for a game and the extra content KSSU adds is actually great as well, enhancing the experience. Even the meta knightmare mode has the energy system that makes it unique and fun.

Chrono Trigger (DS/Steam)

I can only think of 3 ports that truly add interesting things to the original while staying true to it

ports
>Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Saturn)
>Zelda: Link's Awakening DX

remakes
>Dragon Quest V (PS2)
>Metal Max Returns

extra content in Final Fantasy 5/6 on GBA? Chrono Trigger on DS? Fucking horseshit.

Squeak Squad was pretty good for a first kirby as a kid
SSU was awesome as a sequel, loved the cave especially, and it had enough content to make it worth keeping around

When is the NDS and Wii going to be added to /vr/?
They (and only they) (or perhaps also the 360) (and maybe also also the Wii U) (but not the PS3 as it is still technically supported) should be added to the retro canon.

>NDS and Wii
Hopefully never. The reason why? because you also said
>(or perhaps also the 360) (and maybe also also the Wii U)

The 360 has games that are still being sold today because it's the point where gaming stagnated. Fucking Dead Space just came out and it costs MORE THAN THEY ORIGINALLY SOLD IT FOR. That's a new fucking game. The Switch library is MOSTLY Wii U ports for fuck sake. These games have no distinction from games being sold on modern storefronts, because they ARE on modern storefronts. Gaming largely stopped changing during that generation of consoles.

So while we could add DS, PSP, Wii, and probably even 3DS and Vita to the board without seriously harming discussion (like what damage could the PSP do? We'd have threads about fucking Daxter?), the second we add 360/PS3/Wii U and bump the PC date up to like 2012 or something, it's game over. At that point we're making threads about Minecraft and talking about fortnite and the last of us.

So the answer is we draw the line here, and go no further, because people like you are too stupid to know the difference between modern games and old style ones. If they ever add HD capable systems to this board it will no longer have a reason to exist.

Mostly a shittier way to play mario 64 but I apreciate the extra stars more playable characters and the fun as fuck minigames they included.

>> No.9650659

>>9650506
I would only maybe add DS PSP and WII discussions since the DS feels like a 5th gen console graphics wise and the PSP and WII feel like 6th gen.

I don't remember following Kirby that closely as a kid, despite liking the games, but the GBA and DS Kirby era really was the shittiest Kirby era around. The Adventure remake was poor when compared to the original and I absolutely hated the new sprites. It really looks awful compared to the original. Amazing Mirror was kinda ehh. Canvas Curse was the best thing of that era. Squeak Squad was genuinely mediocre and I hated the fuck out of Mass Attack from the demo
Also, not a fan of the new KSSU graphics and the new modes are very meh. I had already beaten KSS to death by that point anyways

>> No.9650997

>>9648357
Canvas Curse is underrated? I thought it was supposed to be extremely good (making me regret not getting it when I could, and encouraging me to get Mass Attack and that Wii U one when I had the chance).

This would have been amazing if the content wasn't tied to a physical card pack gacha mechanic, which was discontinued and inaccessible in the west almost immediately.
The VirtualConsole ROM eventually fixed that, but it was way too late to matter.

Megaman Powered Up. Hate or love the art style, the content added is gives it at least x100 the replay value
