Always saw it as one of the best JRPGs. They really just need to "fix" the echoing, let us speed up the combat and maybe even add a hard mode and it would be a 10/10 and probably worth every cent

I always adored for its actually fantastical art that's a mix of Baroque and weird fairy tale, the first game staying completely clear of typical edgy anime designs or sexy shonen boys and waifus, the Honne (Chrono Cross) backgrounds, the amazing melancholic Sakuraba soundtrack, all the interactivity and optional stuff in the world, the creative level design and, most importantly, the fun card combat putting an actually interseting spin on otherwise boring turn-based combat. Similar to Chrono Cross, you can even avoid enemies on the map and there are no random encounters

Honestly I like the combat system in Baten Kaitos far more than CC. You spend way less time watching fucking battle animations, both because they're way shorter but you'll be more engaged with whats in your hand versus whats on the battle field. Ill say before you start, combat doesnt get really saucy til you class up once or two(which wont take long)

Around standard, which is OK for a random battle arena and a game that's mostly pre-rendered. It even has proper shadows instead of blob shadows like in FF

FF10's battles make far better use of color and scenery, to focus just on just shadows when you're overlooking a game so brown it'd make Quake 2 blush. Besides, X-2 addresses this and is from the same year as Kaitos.

I submit the fan work looks worse (not a big surprise) but the game is far from a looker.

The bathtub effect comes from the dogshit effect processing the game program does when the audio setting isn't anything other than Dolby. If you emulate it you'll have to set Dolphin to LLE Audio emulation and enable Dolby processing to make the Dolby game setting work or else the game will sound the same. This will work on both USA and undub USA versions. Though it sucks that you'll always hear the voices in the intro sequence sound fucked up since you need to get control of your character to access the settings.
I wish there was some cheat code to skip that effects processing entirely so you could emulate it with HLE audio too and not get fucked intro voices.
