I mean, you could argue that it's the best of it's subgenre. In terms of the open-ended-RPG-style 'vania games, yeah you could say this one is better than say "Aria of Sorrow", for example. But, since the release of SOTN, there are now multiple styles of Castlevania. I don't think you could compare Symphony to, say, SCIV, Bloodlines or even Rondo of Blood, since the style of gameplay pre-SOTN is very VERY different.

IKR. The RPG component is completely bolted on. No thought was put into it, and it doesn't work. Within a few hours you WILL have levelled and upgraded to the point that nothing can touch you. You don't even have to try to cheese the game. It just happens.

SotN fanboys complain about old Castlevania being "jank", because they're expecting a game that plays itself, while they look at a cool cape animation, and listen to CD quality music. That's their perception of what playing a video game should be.
