Tell me about retro Monster Hunter

>> No.9629926

2 got rid of 1's dumb thumbstick attacking and got a fan translation, but I guess there is no real reason to play retro MH when the non-retro MHs are more complete

I once played MH1 without stopping except to use the bathroom for 36 hours

Good game

>> No.9630247

Headlocking was dumb and boring though

>> No.9630307

I just ordered MH 1 on PS2. It's going to be my first Monster Hunter game. After this I hope to make Yakuza 1 on PS2 my first Yakuza game

MH1 is very much a prototype. It shouldn't be anyone's first MH experience desu

Honestly I'd recommend you start with 2 and not 1

You probably won't like it. There's a reason they dropped left-stick attack inputs as soon as they could. MHFU is better in every way and runs great on PPSSPP

I love Rise but it's really no MH as we know it. Real MH peaked with Portable Third, Tri and FU

I like all the MH games I've played for different reasons. Lately I've been having fun messing around with Iceborne's more complex movesets and environments. Greatsword getting getting a slinger burst that allows for 360 repositioning into TCS and new options out of tackle results in a crazy high skill ceiling.

Mostly this, but I would actually say the control scheme of the original is the only reason to play it at this point. Many shit on it because it's so unique and has a pretty deep learning curve until you're used to it. But once you are, no other game is like it. You really feel the difference in the weapons, swinging back and forth with the greatsword versus stabbing up and down with the lance. I understand the people who didn't like it, but to me it's sublime and the thing I missed most about the game on it's sequels.

I am a monster hunter super fan though, it's probably my favorite series of games ever. I maxed the clock at 999 hours on the original long, long before I stopped playing and other than Tri on the Wii and the World/Rise games I've put at least several hundred hours into every one.

Playing the original now would be kind of sad because the online was such a major component but it's still an awesome game regardless and the offline game is quite a complete experience in it's own right. If you like it there's plenty more Monster Hunter out there to jump into including Generations Ultimate which is basically the best the series has ever been and still has a decent player base.

That said, the player bases as in all online games are always a little funny. One thing we still joke about is the first time I actually got my PS2 hooked up online. I almost always use greatsword, but happened to have a hammer on me when I came into the hub. I was HR1 so an online newbie, and the first thing said was "hey welcome to MH! Hammers suck btw" because there was an early (wrong impression that they did) but neither happened to notice the hammer I had was the Breathcore which is the most powerful one in the game.

It’s right stick attack and they didn’t drop it until 3U

They dropped it after the first game. The next few games came out only on PSP

Right stick to attack was also still an option in Tri

I played through the offline portion of MH1G a year ago. Fun for the old feel of it, but prohibitively grindy.
I stick to FU-4G for "old" monster hunter.

No game after 3U reassembles MH anymore.

>> No.9635514

Okay I missed that, but it obviously wasn't in the others since they were on PSP and even when they made that add on for one of the DS ones I don't think it brought the old controls back.

The first 3DS one was 3U, the one I said they stopped on. Obviously the PSP ones didn’t have it because there was no right stick on the PSP, but they kept it for the first three generations. I used it until I was forced to switch.

imo it was objectively better because the buttons were less overmapped and you had full access to all actions even while actively moving the camera. Of course, this required the famous Claw. And that’s the reason they took it out in 3U—the 3DS and Wii U have the left thumbstick ABOVE the d-pad, making it damn near impossible to accurately control with the claw grip.

Might as well go GU
In which case might as well go Sunbreak
Speaking of it, I should probably check out the new update, Velkhana is cool at least

I did put "old" in quotes for a reason.

Styles and Arts were the last straw for me. That's why I have 4U as my cutoff.

>> No.9637264

>>9635550
Yeah I never played Tri, it is sad I missed that control scheme being used for the last time, but at this point with the weapons more complex it wouldn't work anyways. But I still have a big nostalgia boner for it and will always miss the way the game felt playing it like that.

>>9636069
>>9636253
For me personally I didn't mind the styles and arts and generations and GU feels like a love letter to the series it's where I have stopped for now. I know I'm one of the few who ever used the feature, but seeing Forest and Hills in full 3D on the 3DS was fantastic. I tried the demo for Rise and it didn't feel at all like Monster Hunter. But I've both played the series to death coming up on 20 years now and have tons left to do in Generations when I pick it up that I'm fine with them doing their own thing.

Headlocking was just a glitch they didn't catch before the game was released. It was super lame though. I would purposefully upswing people I saw doing it. The only exception was doing plate runs, because fuck that carve rate.

Why didn't RE Outbreak take off as much as MH? Instead they opted to release a bunch of shitty shooters.

It was fun but didn't feel like as much of a full game. After running through the scenarios a few times there wasn't much reason to keep coming back.
