R-Type because it doesn't have tedious nonsense like this every single game.

>> No.964535

Ooh, that's a tough choice. Both are fantastic and some of the best horizontal series ever created.

Gradius to me is a little bit more doable than R-Type.
At least, Gradius I, IV and V feel a whole lot more beatable than R-Type 1, 2, and Delta.

The R-Types collection on the PS1 is pretty great. Whenever I want to get my ass handed to me, I can pop in R-Type 2 and dream of getting past the second level.

And then if I want to send myself into a never-ending spiral of frustration, I will pop in the Gradius III and IV pack right afterward and relive the sheer hell that only bubbles can give.

you can get Super R-Type for SNES for a couple dollars.

>> No.966301

>>966269
IMO:

R-Type Final (PS2) should be able to be found and for cheap. But that game suffers from sparce intervals between shooting. This isn't a serious problem, but it's a fair complaint veteran shmup have.

R-Type Delta I hear it's either rare or expensive, but it is easily emulable (as is Final), it's generally considered the best. (I personally recomend this as your entry)

R-Type III should be available on VC or whatever Nintendo has it on. This game also rivals with Delta as being the best, only there's a tremendously hard level in the middle of the game that kinda brings it down.

R-Type 1&2 have a remake of sorts for XBLA. Didn't play it. Didn't hear anything wrong with it. I find them hard as whole. I mean, the entire game seems to rely on twitch reaction (plus the memorization that most require). While the other ones are hard at specific parts only.

Super R-Type, Like R-Type 3 should be available on the same places. I think this is remixed remake of 1&2 (on 16 bit, earlier than the XBLA version). But I'd say avoid it since it has deathly slowdown that kills you when it suddenly goes up to normal speed again.

Sarcastic.

I would like to know the reasoning behind it.

Like, did they feel whoring out their shmups was the only way to get people interested? Or were they under the impression that this is the sort of things that shmup fans want?

Or did they want to do something with Gradius, but didn't really want to put forth any effort, so they just slapped some tits on it?

It's pretty sad, whatever the reason.

>>998781
That's not even the reason why I hate Otomedius. It's just blatant fanservice. Like, in the character select, if you hover your cursor over the characters tits, they'll bounce around.

And then it doesn't have any substance to back it up. It's the laziest remake of Gradius ever. It actually plays worse than the original, and it looks worse than a Playstation game.

Oh, and the most recent one is like fifty fucking dollars retail. Or you can get the bonus edition for even more and get a fucking anime pillow and a CD filled with shitty anime music.

Also, some asshat from Cocktacu really liked the game.

>> No.998808

>Like, in the character select, if you hover your cursor over the characters tits, they'll bounce around.

It's good to have things like this in games. In Dead or Alive 5 for example you can shake the PS3 controller and it will make the characters' boobs bounce. It gives visual appeal and keeps things lighthearted.

>> No.998821

>>998808

Well that's fine, but it's the fact that the characters look like they're 13 (and actually are around that age, if I recall some of the "story" correctly) that's a bit off putting.

And DoA actually has a solid, fun game behind it. Once you're done watching tits bounce around for awhile, you have a decent 3D fighting game to play.

With Otomedius, it's basically just watching tits bounce, and having to play a terrible version of Gradius in between that. Might as well just cut out the middle man and go watch some porn, then play a real Gradius game.

I'm fine with sex appeal in a game, so long as there's some actual substance to it. Otherwise it's basically just overpriced porn, only it's not porn.

With Otomedius, it's pretty clear they targeted this game towards the "otaku" types that probably don't even know what Gradius is. They just bought it because it has anime tits.

No one's mentioned R-Type Leo? This is the only one you can emulate properly with no vsync since it's a 60 Hz 320x240. Going to fire it up on the Trinitron later over component.

Then again I don't really keep up with these news unless someone else posts them. IDK if IREM is still a thing given they seem to focus on those slot machine software.

The reasons behind this are simple and complicated. It is possible to solve all your problems but you need a low resolution monitor to do it...one that handles sub VGA resolutions. Old computer monitor, pro editing monitor, regular Tv with the right inputs or converters, or an arcade monitor.

But you also need to send the right signal. A Wii can send the signal. But R Type runs at 55 fps and programmers haven't gotten it to do vatiable sync. So it speeds up to 60. A PC with custom drivers solves this.

It's nice people care about the ones who worked at modern, crappy IREM, but everyone who was interested in making games at IREM already left long, long ago for Nazca Corporation. Then what was left at that empty husk just sat on some IPs for a while before hiring new people. The employees you're referring to had nothing at all to do with IREM when it was one of the greatest Retro companies.

Darius Gaiden and G-Darius are the two best Darius games.

The SNES entries aren't really worth the time, Sagaia on the Genesis is a bit too basic, and the GBA Darius-R is complete shit. While I like Darius II in some respects, you're best off with Gaiden and G-Darius.

Darius Gaiden is fairly easy to emulate, and is available on several platforms.
G-Darius is on the PS1 (lots of slowdown; avoid it), the PS2 (great port in Taito Legends 2 collection), and Windows 95 (don't know anything about it). The PS2 port would be your way to go, since it also has several other worthwhile Taito shooters, like RayStorm, Metal Black, and indeed, Darius Gaiden.

I think Darius II should be in the best Darius games.

As long as you play the 2 screen version in MAME, with autofire turned all the way up in the dip switch settings, it's a fun game.

I think the two-screen version still obscures too much - you have to go all-three or nothing. At least when you play it in MAME, you can see everything. In the saturn port, it's hard to see the dot-bullets, and this is especially a pain in the ass on the Venus stage E, where it's orange bullets on an orange background.

I like Darius II a lot, but Darius Gaiden and G-Darius are what I'd recommend without hesitation.

A bit late, but what happened was their next major release (For the year) was meant to be the next game in the disaster report series, but the tsunami happened, and they decided they couldn't release it without offending a bunch of people (Even though people stated those games taught people certain survival techniques because at least the info shown in the games for what you should do in a crisis are based off real world things)
But with that game canceled just a few weeks from release, pretty much all the developers left to form Granzella, and Irem went full-time into Pachinko/Slots business.
