What's the earliest racing game someone in the modern day should bother picking up and playing unironically? Difficulty's fine.

Any of the first three are good choices for different reasons. And for anyone complaining about the low frame rate, there are mods and emulator overclock settings to increase it.

while there's some earlier stuff that's pretty good, the first I would actually recommend people go out of their way to play is outrun. Once you get past the somewhat wonky psuedo 3d turning mechanics it's a fantastic little concept for a driving game, a 5 stage gauntlet that ends with a crescendo of the music track you're playing as you approach the climax. honestly put it ahead of any burnout game.

What are the chief differences between the three? I remember having a good time with the Road Rash games as a wee lad but didn't grasp the nuances beyond "hahaha chain go whack".

i used to play stunts a lot in the 90s. It's pretty good. You can't upgrade your car though like in Street Rod 2. But the track building thing was good at the time, trying to make the biggest jumps possible etc

Enduro for 2600 has some interesting variety and like a lot of "simple" Atari games, it has a surprising amount of strategy to it.

RR saturn > RR1 sega tied with RR2 sega > RR sega cd > RR3 sega

Pretty sure that's the order

Saturn one looks the best and all the sega ones are fun but most people say 3 isn't good and looks bad too. People liked the ps1 versions too but I think the Saturn still wins for this

Indy 500 on the 2600 (with racing controller) is still quite fun. Although not strictly "racing" games, Night Driver and Enduro are very fun.

>Top Gear
Wasn't the first one just a clone of Lotus Turbo Challenge? Anyway, all of them games play great up to this date, but I think Lamborghini American Challenge would be the best one due to the soundtrack and the betting system, even if it's a bit slower. Game Boy port was suprisingly capable as well.

Anyway, earliest racing game I could still recommend is Stunts on the PC, pic related, released in 1990. Comes with a really robust track editor in-game, so you can create some sick tracks filled with loops, jumps etc. Basically Trackmania before Trackmania was even a thing. Graphics are ancient, but charming in a weird way.

I played a very decent racing game for the Atari 2600. Can't recall the name.
