Can we have a thread about obscure or simply lesser known PC games from the late 90s and early 20s?

I have a weird soft spot for all the mediocre games released back then, because even if they weren't particularly good, they almost always felt fresh and tried something interesting. I always enjoy finding new ones.

Man of War II Chains of Command from 1999 was a pretty unique naval warfare game, though it had a lot of flaws too. It's fun but bittersweet reading old archived fan pages devoted to it, knowing it's practically unknown today. I feel like I'm the only one still playing or talking about it.

Outcast 1.1 is a good contender. Came out in 1999 and it has some interesting voxels graphics. The gameplay itself is kind of meh, the mission structure is too repetitive, guns are not that fun to use, and you have to walk slowly to everywhere, it's frustrating after a while. However, the characters are likeable and the worldbuilding and lore is interesting, there are also interesting open world mechanics that could be way more fun and immersive if they were refined and thought over more.

Never understood why you can't get them to run on newer systems and as a matter of fact personally never had an issue that was more than a 5min google search away from getting it to work.

People told me running them on linux via wine would be easier but I personally had more issues than on windows.

It's a wonderful game that suffers due to repetitiveness of combat. I can't even count the number of times I've started playing it, but I've never finished it and you probably haven't for the same reason. I've seen a mod somewhere that speeds things up, so might actually revisit it sometime.

This game wasn’t released until 2009 (and took 3 more years to get translated into languages besides Czech), but for all intents and purposes it’s basically a retro game. The development took 10 years and the devs did very little to change the game’s initial architecture. It runs on Direct 3D for fuck’s sake.

Anyway, it’s not a very good game from a gameplay perspective but the story is phenomenal. I’d advise anyone who enjoys Diablo-clones to check it out (if the gameplay doesn’t end up filtering you).

There's also an incomplete English translation in the game data. All in pretty low quality. I guess the developer translated it from Korean to English and the publisher then translated it to German. I was thinking about re-inserting the English script and re-translating the missing parts myself, but I just didn't find the time and motivation to do so yet. The game is rather mediocre but I have some nostalgia for it.
