These games are pretty fun. Only flaws? I would say a couple battles that require extremely specific strategies that you may as well look up, secrets that you may as well look up, and tone breaking "the medieval fantasy game is scifi now" shit

So basically, it doesn't really have any flaws most old school JRPGs don't also have

Having to spend more time switching around equipment than actually playing battles is a pretty huge flaw.

Battles which are too difficult for you to figure out by trial and error are not a flaw, they are an idiot filter, and you got filtered.

I played it recently but didn't really dig it at all; I wrote many words on it but it's kinda tl;dr even for me.

Long and short of it though what that SF1 kinda just felt like a shitty strategy game, even if it's a charming enough time when approached as just 'make a team of ten and bum rush the enemy for thirty maps straight'.

That's a classic in fantasy though. I guess nobody noticed Final Fantasy did it too (though for the records the remakes tone that part down to the point of retcon)

>>9622436
SF2 fixed those crazy RNG stats, promotion penalties, and there are no mountainous maps where only flying units get to move properly.
But in way some people also think the game is boring because of that.
Most of the other problems still remain.

how the fuck is the circus fight difficult or that you need a guide? the boss doesnt even fucking move if i remember right. just clear out the rest and bum rush it. chess board fight isnt that hard either. maybe you just dont rush in, and instead let the enemy come to you a little bit. >>9623692 i'll grant you the kraken solely on the fact that you can reach it 2 battles too early, but if you just actually reach it normally, it doesnt take any sort of special strategy. is it a little unique? sure. but its not something you need to "look up" about. hell, even taros is clearly explained that he can only be damaged by the achilles sword.
try harder for examples please.

turn order is mostly dictated by speed/agility stat, with some exceptions/issues. if hans went twice, he probably leveled and the system got confused due to his speed increase. 14 attack to something with 6 defense and only doing 6 damage is due to the 15% land effect defense boost. not sure about your max/tao difference, but i think that there are also damage "ranges" where the precise number can vary by a few points. stat variance was a huge problem in sf1, but sf2 is more reliable. the maps in sf1 suck ass with terrible movement and choke points, sf2 is SIGNIFICANTLY better at this. agility doesnt affect dodge, its that chimeras are a "flying" unit, and flying units have stupid dodge in sf1.

>> No.9624153

I keep seeing this here and I still fail to understand exactly what the problem is. Can you explain your issues in more detail?

>> No.9624290

not that guy, but the first game sucked with item management. sf2 streamlined acquirement from chests and such by just passing it to the next available person in the roster. however, if they're talking about selling weaker weapons and buying new ones, i feel like they're wildly overexaggerating things. its really not that serious, and not really different from any other retro rpg.

>> No.9624921

>>9622436
Huh, that's interesting about counterattacks. I never really thought about it. You're right many tactics / strategy games like this do do that. Shining Force is more like Dungeons and Dragons tactical battles then. There's only a small chance an opponent will counter.

SF2 has some of the dumbest enemy AI I've seen in an SRPG. I lost count of how many times some enemy magic user would saddle to one of my guys, and instead of casting some powerful spell, he defaults to hitting my dude with a stick.

>a couple battles that require extremely specific strategies
There are almost no strategies required, the games are incredibly simple. The chess battle filters people because it's a step up and you're supposed to have promoted by then, but other than that there's really not much thinking at all.

>> No.9626481

Every time I replay these games, I remember them being more simplistic than they actually are. Great games still worth playing today. It's just a shame Shining Force CD wasn't spruced up with towns and exploration and such.

You just have to have the foresight to keep one open slot on a party member if you want them to open a chest during a battle, that's hardly 'having to spend more time switching around equipment than actually playing battles.' Unless you plan on keeping all your old, underpowered weapons it's hardly a problem.

what? no. the issue is searching chests around towns and stuff as max. you have to keep swapping items away and its fucking annoying and stupid. the second game does it so much better by just passing it to the next team member with an open item slot. that is a very tedious and real thing, and a valid complaint/criticism. is it "having to spend more time switching around equipment than actually playing battles"? no, i think that anon was exaggerating, but it does still suck. if he meant anything more than that, then i dont know.

>> No.9630504

>>9630432
Sure it's a valid complaint/criticism. But pretending it takes more than a few seconds is incredibly disingenuous. All old RPGs tend to have some quirks with their inventory systems.

Balbaroy breaks the first game so hard, I wasn't even really trying to over use him, but the fact that he (and Amon and Kokichi to a lesser extent) can just end the most annoying battles in the game in minutes is just too tempting. He can wield the Chaos Breaker too, which is just overkill, but it's funny that no guides or online resources seem to recognize that he can do this.

Eventually I'd like to do a no-fliers run, but every time I get to a "everyone can only move 2-3 tiles per turn" map I buckle.

Balbaroy and Amon require some work put into them to be good, and they also use swords of which there is a very small pool to choose from when it comes to late game. Domingo is broken from the moment you hatch it though.

SF1 did have a few too many mountain/forest maps. Despite that, I like SF1 more than SF2, I really enjoy the serious war theme of the game and the music, as well as the characters.
