Also Neo geo thread

I got it with Samurai Shodown 2 and I plan on getting the fatal fury and early kof games for it. What are some other cheap games I could get for it? Any good cheap shmups?

Cheap games are mostly what you described, early fighters. Others would include stuff like Magician Lord and NAM 1975 cause they were launch titles or close to it. The actual good games on the system, stuff like Metal Slug 1-3, Turf Masters, Windjammers, Blazing Star, Twinkle Star Sprites, etc cost literally thousand(s), and some games like Shock Troopers 1 (one of the best on the system) didn't even get an AES release, although an AES version is still built into the MVS cart and can be enabled with dip switches.

TL;DR: get a flash cart.

Unless you are a rabid hardcore mentally ill SNK fan like me than you just wasted your money. Since you don’t even know the catalog then I’m going to assume you are not. There are no cheap games for the AES even cartridges sold in Japan are a minimum of $75. Also all the cartridges are the same they are not region locked. The console holds the language data for the games so if you buy a cartridge in the US and put it in your japanese AES then the game is going to be in Japanese. Realistically your best bet is either emulation or buying one of those 161 in 1 cartridges.

Congrats OP. I'm a big fan of Neo Geo games but for me the AES is like an 80's Ferrari; just because I can buy one doesn't mean I could afford it. So I mostly play everything that got released on the PS2. However if I ever pulled the trigger on a "real" system it would have to be a consolized MVS. They're usually a bit less expensive than an AES but it's the games that are much cheaper and relatively easier to find. Hopefully you get to enjoy yours. I look forward to seeing it in future threads once you finally get it.

Ignore the /vr/ idiots above. Get a furrtek fusion adapter. Must have MVS carts under $90:

Samurai Shodown 1 & 2
Metal Slug 1 & 2
King of fighters 94
Fatal fury 3
Neo Turf Masters
Kof 98
2020 super baseball
Aero fighters 2
Street hoop
Breakers
Top hunter

You probably wanna stay away from chima multi carts as these produce a lot of audio glitches and random resets.

>many technical advantages
Not finding a whole lot on those on the internet.
Here's what I did find
>AES has built-in composite output
Since a lot of Superguns also have transcoders built-in this doesn't really matter. Even less so if you're using a scaler.
>AES has a built-in memory card interface
The difficulty of getting one for an MVS varies but who the hell is actually using these anyways?
>AES allows for an easier audio setup
Most (all?) MVS don't output line-level audio out of the box so depending on your Supergun it might be more difficult to get nice audio
>AES don't have socketed BIOS chips
Some, not all, MVS have the BIOS ROM already in a socket so Unibios modding is a plug-n-play affair rather than having to deal with soldering
>can play MVS games on an AES with an adapter but not vice versa
Unless you happen to come across a cheap AES cart somewhere this is unlikely to matter.
MVS carts are cheaper and have better availability. AES carts are basically a collectible at this point.

Overall not seeing much of a reason here to prefer an AES

I bet you thought you would tell me that that the AES is the same hardware as the MVS and that the games are identical.
BUT THEY ARE NOT.

When the games are running in MVS mode they almost always have a better and wider selection of options compared to the AES mode.

Yes, you can mod the AES with a unibios but then you're just turning it into a ghetto MVS. And it requires soldering and physically altering a very expensive system. Which will probably eventually make it less valuable to collectors.

BTW the AES controller sux compared to LS-32/40 + 30mm sized buttons. Ya know, the controls that the games were really meant to be played with.
