Was trying to get started on 68000 so I open atom and look for some 68000 syntax highlighting but the somebish has been discontinued. Tried manually copying the 68000 syntax and it seems to not be complete or working. The best one I found was a text editor called sublime and I found a separate download for the syntax. It is kind of like shareware so if you ended selling your game you couldn't use this. Tried vscodium and notepadqq, the syntax highlighting also seems not complete.

anyway someone made wolf 3d for cga

that's gonna depend on the assembler you use, each has its own quirks
also you might have those mov's backwards? z80 is usually destination, source which i hate and feels wrong but that's just how it is because that's how it always was

Yeah I was going through the ticalc 68k & z80 assembly tutorials a while back for eventual Genesis dev. Learning both was awkward, so I just went with the 68k. It helped that the 68k was easier has Easy68k to practice on.

definitely next on my list. i hear lots of good things. coming from 6502, z80 is actually pretty straight forward; 6502 you can kind of go insane with weird optimizations involving flags and cycle counts.

Sometimes it's possible, but it depends on how each patch was constructed. If one or more of them start moving data around that conflicts with the other patches it'll break. If there's no documentation about it then the only way to know for sure would be to try it.

>> No.9622364

Use Lunar IPS and make sure the "Create a log file" option is ticked, then check the log files and see if that no two hacks replaces the same addresses (offset + size)

in most cases if there are is no overlap then it should be compatible, unless as pointed out, one of the hacks moved data around and a change in another hack still thinks the data is in the original place.

Programmer decides ROM read speed, but if it is too much for the cart it returns shit instead of the expected values.
So you enable the "fast" ROM read speed (the speed used by almost if not all commercial games), you read some data from ROM and if returned values are not what you expect you are using a piece of shit cart.

fun little game so far, it works perfectly on console! i like the link's awakening style instant weapon select, seems like it would be fun if you had a kid to doodle around with the helper.
holding the cursor is a bit jarring, it could use some steadiness or just one selection per press. also a hint about cutting the grass from talking to the townspeople would be helpful as well, as i talked to all of them, traversed the map several times, and wasn't sure how to proceed. otherwise i had fun, nicely done.
as a wishful request, i'm not sure how you programmed your game, but 8px grid movement is a little bit of a bummer, if you could move 1px at a time that makes a huge difference in an action RPG... but i know that can get tricky with hitboxes and things...

If you want to do NES, then code in assembly. Games were programmed in that because those old systems are slow and they wanted to squeeze as much performance as possible out of them. Sonic Spinball for Sega Genesis was coded in C to speed up its development, and because of that the game has such a choppy framerate.

it's not a baaaaad idea, but you are never going to get away with Pure C unless you're making an RPG or something not processor intensive. there's just so little memory and processing power and you are super tied to the hardware, and the overhead that C requires is going to suck precious resources. there's no way around it.
a going theory on NESdev is to use some C for the overarching logic and sprinkle in raw ASM where the performance is needed.

Castlevania 3's US release leaves a ton of data untouched as the memory was expanded drastically. It's all technically bank switching background graphics and not pure sprite data (otherwise the rest of the game would become a flickering mess) which means game performance doesn't take any hits. The downside being it takes up a massive amount of space only the MMC5 could effectively handle, along the line of around 16 banks. The plan going forward would be to render a much larger rotating structure with more detail.
