To beat, sure. The scoring system in this game is actually fun, though. To score high, you have to clip the target with the edge of your charge shot, instead of hitting directly. So to score high, you've basically got to trick shot everything you can. Its super fun. Seventeen years later, I still try to beat my high scores every once in a while. This is one of my favprite games for that limitless replay value.

Getting the medals was kind of fun though, I guess.

feels more like a tech demo than a real game.
it's fun, sure, but I don't think it would have made the impact it did it if it were released after everyone had seen games like OoT, Perfect Dark, and Jet Force Gemini

>> No.960754

>>960732
I don't, normally, but this game is so fucking fun that's it's fun to do. Still haven't quite been able to hit 600 in Area 6. Gotten close a few times, though. Anyway, the controls are rock solid and the whole feel of the game is astounding.

When that piece of shit Assault came out, I remember being most disappointed not about the on-foot or landmaster stuff, but about how godawful the arwing felt. Everyone kept going on about how the arwing missions were still great, but I thought they were the worst part of that game. They felt all sorts of wrong. Slow, flimsy, the lasers had no oomph. Felt like piloting a toy.

Are you talking about the original or 64? Star Fox 64 never had any real impact on the industry (Unless inspiring Sin & Punishment counts as that). It was pretty much just seen as a great game, which it is.

>> No.960778

>>960759

It was the first game with rumble, that's pretty significant.

>> No.960780

eh, I liked Assault. Massively disappointing but you get used to controls/feel. Final 2 levels are really great.

>> No.960786

I guess that's true, but I was more thinking about its lasting impact. People talked about rumble, at least for a short while, but it's not like anyone was going nuts for SF64 years before it came out and afterwards, unlike Zelda and Goldeneye. It just kind of came out and people played it. At least, that's how I always saw it as a kid. As a matter of fact, including me, there were only two kids in my class who had an N64 that had Star Fox 64. Everyone had Mario 64, Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing, Goldeneye, the usually 1997 titles, but Star Fox always seemed underappreciated in the 90s. That's speaking strictly from personal third grade experience, though.

The multiplayer was still better than the 64's.

That's true, it wasn't as big as some, but it's had it's impact.

Has anyone played the 3DS remake of SF64? I think it's currently one of the best games on the system and beats the shit out of OoT in terms of remake quality.

You're an idiot. The first game with rumble was Sega's Moto-Cross back in 1976. Go back to youtube.

This is one of my favorite N64 games. Great gameplay and production values, endless replayability. I easily prefer it to Rogue Squadron or Battle for Naboo.

I don't really like Star Fox 2, honestly. The pacing is just really bizarre. Incredibly impressive for SNES hardware, but not a great deal of fun compared to SF and SF64.

Possibly a really stupid question, but here goes...
If StarFox 2 was supposed to use some hot new version of the FX chip, how do repro carts work?

I'm a sucker for games with multiple paths, and even if they all end up at the same place (well, two places) it managed a system that gave you actual choices and consequences simply and elegantly. If we ever get a true sequel I'd love nothing more than to see an expansion of this, with more stages to choose from and a greater degree of consequence for your choices.

So do you guys still, like, DIE playing this? Or have any of your wingmen die? These days I can't quite play it with my eyes closed, but I can do hard path without ever losing a wing, wingman or dying and no question of real danger until Andross' True Form.

It's impossible for me or my allies to die in this game. I'm too damn good at this game. I'm not trying to make a joke at all. This game presents little to no challenge to me anymore after a decade of playing. And I still love it. Hunting for the high score gives it great replay value. I'm surprised there hasn't been an arcade version of this game.

>> No.963232

That feels when I played Starfox 64 last month and realized it's getting close to being 20 years old. Sweet jesus.

>> No.963245

Anyone else a big fan of the original Star Fox? It does some things better than 64 did. Better music (outstanding music, really,) more challenging, and a more intense atmosphere. Ultimately, 64 is the better game. It looks better, runs better, and the scoring system gives it longer legs. However, I still return to the original every couple years and I enjoy it every time.

That on foot mode was so stupid if even 1 person was still in a vehicle. There is no way to win against your friend if he is in an Arwing and you are on foot. You die in 2-3 hits.

The textures were fine, at least for Star Fox 64. What I really put the blame on for the "blurriness" the system is known for is that post-processing anti-aliasing/blur filter they insisted on adding on top.
