You just reminded me of the time I saw one CIB, I believe even still shrink-wrapped, at some random Mexican flea market something like 15 years ago, and my dumbass passed it up. It wasn't even some collectorfag or vidya shop stall either - it was literally some guy selling random shit. Think he was asking like $20 or $30 for it, can't remember. Oh well.

On another note, it always bothered me a bit how inconsistent Nintendo was with the whole gold packaging/cartridges thing. The NES titles were both golden, with gray cartridge versions coming out later. ALttP was always just gray, and so was LA. Then OoT comes out with the gold and gray cartridges again, and then MM is ALL golden cartridges, so you were likely to have a gray OoT and a gold MM. Then TWW has golden box AND disc art, which was cool, and TP has some crap box art and even worse disc art, which IIRC only the Wii version is kinda sorta golden? I know it's autistic, but eh.

IIRC not guaranteed. Both version 1.0 and 1.1 was released on gold carts, and AFAIK there is no way to tell from just the shell which version it is without playing or dumping it unless you have a version with the "Not For Resale" label on it. Likewise there are also some grey carts that are version 1.0.

Ah, you're right.

https://tcrf.net/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Ocarina_of_Time/Version_Differences

I know that 1.1 fixed a ton of bugs, but I also thought it was censored from 1.0. Looks like they didn't get around to censoring the game until NTSC 1.2 or the first PAL release.

Also...
>Japanese/USA 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 N64 releases are alternatively known as NTSC 1.0, NTSC 1.1, and NTSC 1.2 respectively. Although they are technically different binaries, the only difference between the two is the country code byte in the ROM header, which is used to set the ROM's default language. There is no in-game language selection feature.

Wait, so the entire game is in both Japanese and English on all NTSC versions? But instead of having a language select... they hard-code which language the game will use? That, yeah, that sounds like a perfectly Nintendo thing to do. I would have assumed this was a cheap attempt at trying to region lock/discourage imports, but they already had a (pathetically easy to overcome) region lock on the N64 AND the game released with only a two-day difference between Japan and the US (Not like YouTube or Twitch was a thing back then and importing would have taken longer than two days) so there was zero point if that was the reason.

>> No.9605121

>>9605094
Yep; you can use a Gameshark to load a US cartridge in Japanese. You can then start a new game with a Japanese name, save, turn off the system, remove the Gameshark, and load up the save just fine with a Japanese name in an otherwise English game.

>> No.9605148

Yeah I bought one like a year ago, wasn't actually that expensive I only paid around 60$ for it.

>> No.9605172

>>9605121
Yeah, just used a hex editor to compare the two ROMs. Literally just a single byte of difference, one letter in the header is E in the US version and J in the Japanese version.

I had both day 1 purchases of the gold cartridges for OT and MM. I ended up selling these along with my N64, gamecube, and about 10 playstation games (they wouldn't buy my original design PS1 even though it was in perfect condition) for about $90. I did all of this just so I could buy Diablo 3 when money was tight. God I regret that purchase. I don't really care about the games I sold though. I was emulating everything I cared about playing, and I'm not into collecting child shit like this.

That sounds like a pretty shitty deal even for 2012, yeah. Retro overpricing was heavily ramping up by then.

I sold just the BOXES for some of my old consoles and N64 games for several hundred altogether. In fact, I sold some of the extra consoles I had lying around that I no longer need and they went for much less than the empty boxes, unless it's a more recent console.

I was never much of a collector, at most I like to collect some of the more noteworthy games or ones from the past that I just really liked but I never cared too much about the boxes or condition over just playing the games. I have no desire to have a "full collection" for a console like some have, at least, not in physical form. I lucked out a bit though, went on a spending spree for old N64 and PS1 games around 2006, a little before the retro-boom. I remember it being considered expensive to pay more than $10 for a PS1 or N64 game that wasn't something rare, Amazon was full of hundreds of sealed boxed copies of Perfect Dark for $3 each. Managed to snag dozens of the N64 and PS1 games I always wanted to play, or had rented and loved but never owned for $1-5 each. Even ones that are expensive nowadays like Conker, the Banjo games, 007, every WWF game, Yoshi's Story, Mystical Ninja, Bomberman, and a few others... sadly I think I didn't get Diddy Kong Racing or the Turok games. Most are just the cart, but a few like Conker are CIB... that have actually degraded a bit because I had no idea I should have stored them well at the time.

That being said a few are special to me, such as a copy of Megaman 1 complete in box that I got for a mere 25 cents at a garage sale less than a year ago. I was very very tempted to sell it since that tends to go for over $300, but I wanted to just have at least one thing special since as far as I am aware nothing in my entire game collection since I started gaming in the NES era is special or rare and decided to keep it.

(Also, WATA can go burn in hell)

Mupen64Plus-Next using the ParaLLEl plugins in RetroArch with 4x resolution downsampled back down to native with a CRT shader. If you don't like RetroArch or CRT shaders, you can alternatively try it out on simple64 or RMG, again using the ParaLLEl plugins, and if you want hi-res, use those same plugins at 4x resolution. Be sure to play using the version 1.0 ROM, though, since it has no censorship and it has some fun glitches that were patched out in later versions. Additionally, you can try the Redux fanmod that adds some QoL stuff like being able to equip and unequip Iron Boots on the fly.

If you're playing any version besides the original Japanese release it's censored as all the text is an interpretation of someone else which will inevitably leave something out. Really unless you're a native Japanese speaker it's going to be censored cause no matter how fluent you become you're still self translating it in your head to your original native language thus censoring many of the nuances of the language. I'm sorry but the unfortunate reality is unless you were born and raised in Japan by a Japanese family you will forever have a censored experience.
