Guados have giant hands and fingers that resemble tree roots, the hair grows in big clumped branches like tree limbs. Seymour is only a halfbreed though which would explain his smaller hands, the hair I can assume is him overcompensating for that since he lives with Guado and not Humans and was harassed as a child for not being Guado enough.

Those drawings generally look pretty cool. Turning them into realistically shaded 3D models is part of the problem. It worked pretty well in FFXIII, but not so well in previous FF games. Rikku looks great in that image. But in the game she's one more uncanny-looking pseudo-Asian with annoyingly quirky choreography.

There's no excuse for Seymour at any point, of course. Or for whoever that insufferably smug-looking weirdo is next to him.

Insisting that every fantasy fashion design should be 100% utilitarian would lead to everyone looking exactly the same with zero fun allowed. I think Square still had LA-based CGI artists with experience working on real movies on their staff at the time. A lot of scenes in their games from that time period have fantastic composition. Parasite Eve always stands out to me because its CGI scenes are framed like a big blockbuster action movie.

They did it primarily to have unique looking characters that stand out. That much should be obvious to anybody including you. I'd say it worked very well. Put a huge list of modern day video game realism characters in my face, I couldn't likely tell them apart and think of what game they are from. Final Fantasy though these characters looked very unique at least at a time. Maester Seymour will always stand out because of his odd hair.

Spira is one giant fucking cargo cult for Zanarkand. Their prayers are a Blitzball good luck charm. They talk about a sports stadium like it's the Wailing Wall.
