I cannot understand what would possess anyone to want to sit 4-6 feet away from their monitor. 8+ feet if you want to play on a TV.

My current lightgun setups are on 19-20 inch monitors, and I sit with my gun 1 foot away from the screen, my body about 2.5 feet away. You would have a vastly inferior picture than me, because a 24" monitor is smaller than a 20" 4:3, and you have to sit twice as far back. It's 3 feet minimum for gun distance, which means you have to sit 4 feet away.

Light guns are one of those things that should be fucking trivial to recreate with modern technology, and yet no company is interested. I would happily pay 500 bucks for a non-recoil gun with no distance limitations. The closest available options are laser based solutions, but even then you can obscure the laser with your body or gun.

You're correct that it's trivial to build a modern light gun setup. The issue is that no light gun games were programed with that sort of setup in mind, so none of them would work with it.

Literally all you have to do is make a mouse. There are dozens of emulators, they all work just fine with my 30 year old Act Labs setup, which is a CRT only gun with hardcoded white flashes (it hooks into your VGA signal).

Emulation is good enough for everything up to PS2, which covers the vast majority of light gun titles.

You can set it up on a screen that large, no problem. The issue is the DISTANCE you have to stand away from such a screen, which means the relative size of that screen gets much smaller.

For people who are after the arcade experience, or even a superior one with a bigger screen, your shitty solution doesn't compare. HotD there uses a 45" rear projection screen. It's 66" deep, which means the guns are positioned around 40" from the display, and you can stand quite comfortably at 45" away, with the guns around 20-25" away from the screen. This would be screen size * 0.5, not screen size * 1.5.

The minimum distance you'd be able to stand away with Sinden or any of these shit modern solutions is around 90 inches (68" from barrel). Which is double the distance. Which means the picture you will see will be a quarter the size of what was intended, technically a little smaller because you still need to add in the bezel. This doesn't change if you change the size of the screen, either. You're always limited by the size of the border, which means you will always be forced to stand far further away than is optimal.

At best, assuming you're using a 4:3 bezel (if you use 16:9 you need to stand even further away), you will have an FOV that's only 2/3rds of mine on a 30 year old setup. It'd be less than half if I had a large rear projection monitor or someone made a real modern light gun.

It only "works" because you've never had anything better.

>>9599070
Rear projection monitors were just fancy CRTs. CRT projectors could put out even larger pictures, there was one clay pigeon light gun title called Shoot Away that used a 68-100 inch display back in the 80s.

Most of the light gun methods that were popular in the early 90s were incompatible with projector screens. Arcades ended up having to switch to LED-scanning light guns to make them work. That's the method that's still used in arcade machines to this day.

That's not true, CRT projectors existed, and rear projection worked fine. The reason for the switch to IR was to reduce flashing, likely in response to the whole Pokemon porygon shit in 97. It just happened to line up with CRTs getting phased out later.

Just for fun, I also calculated what the FOV would be like if I had a true LCD based light gun right now. On my 43" monitor, I would have a 35" 4:3 region. This gives me an FOV that's ever so slightly higher than HotD Deluxe. Oh, how nice it would be.

I know it's a joke, but you'd still have a lot of issues because binoculars and this shit don't autofocus like your eyes do. For anything else you could just set the focus to the screen depth, but for light gun titles you want to focus on the gun sight, which is always going to be moving around. Plus half the reason for a big screen experience is the fun of moving your arms around more to play the game, that's why Shoot Away did so well, because it had a massive image.

>>9599548
If you have to use it in 16:9 you'll be sitting even further away. Assuming you can at least set it to 4:3 somehow, you'll still need to sit 8 feet away, there's nothing about consoles that make the experience any better.

I wish there was a good light gun solution that didn't require a CRT, but there just isn't. And as large CRTs get harder and harder to find, there's more and more of a risk that light gun stuff is just going to remain in limbo forever.

No no no. That's modern meme PVM plastic collector logic. It was always better to play on the biggest screen possible from as far away as the cord would let you and most middle class households in America typically had a ~30ish" tv in the living room back in the day. There's zero fun being right up on the screen. These new solutions typically have a lot of issues from what I've heard, though it would be fun as fuck to play duck hunt from the couch on my 75"

It's a balancing act. Yes, it's fun further from the screen. But the further away you get, the smaller the screen gets. I'm not talking about playing with your gun essentially touching the screen, that's always been shit. But sitting close enough to make use of the image available, which is around the 2.5 feet mark, and using a grip that puts your gun 6-12" away from the screen.

The ideal would probably be a 100"+ screen I can stand 6 feet away from, giving me a gun distance of 4 feet, and a view angle of 50 degrees horizontal. This wouldn't be possible with modern solutions, which would require a minimum distance of 14 feet away.

Ive seen videos of crt lightgun games. Looks way too close for my taste and then at that its pixelated garbage. Take hotd1 the only console port is sega saturn and its so fucking disgusting its not even worth it. Besides the white borders(which im probably going to attempt to make thinner today when i play) the game is clear and accurate for me. The tv does not feel far for me because its a huge tv. You saying u need to be close to me is like telling me i should sit at the front row of a movie theatre.
You can also factor in the fact that if you do want a console lightgun game. You would have to get:the console, the lightgun, and the crt. All for probably one game and at 640x480 at that. With sinden or whatever pc lightgun you want( can speak for others because i dont have them) but i have the freedom of resolution as well as the range of games i want to play:for free.

It's all of them, because none of them work. There are ways to make a working light gun, nobody has bothered. I've watched half a dozen projects fizzle out over the past 5 years, and all we're left with are wastes of time like thick screen bezels or LEDs you have to tape to your monitor.

>all things eventually need an upgrade.
It's a direct proven downgrade in all aspects. You might as well be arguing that nobody needs a d-pad anymore because we have cool touch screen phones now.

>im giving up a huge amount of customization and range.
I'm not saying you should buy my setup. I'm just saying your setup is shit.

>ur standing 75 inches from a 50 inch is not tht far away.
It is. It's a fucking mile away. The furthest back I'd be willing to stand from a 50" screen is 50 inches. On your screen, you get a horizontal FOV of 24.5 degrees for 4:3 games. If I had a good non-CRT lightgun, I would have an FOV almost twice as large on my monitor.
