Have you played it? Because while "boring" is a matter of opinion, I don't think anyone could really say that it's easy. It's certainly harder than vanilla Doom.

>> No.959702

>>959685
Oh, you're one of those types. Alright, I'll see what I can do, but I doubt you'll be convinced anyway.
>Regen health
Shields regenerate. Your health does not. Health pickups are much rarer than in vanilla Doom, since they replace green armors and berserk packs only.
>grenades
None of the weapons have a blast radius worth mentioning. Grenades step in to fill that role.
>chargeable melee / big grenade explosions, super jumping
All of which use the same power supply. Fully charging melee or grenades also kills your shields, leaving you extremely vulnerable to enemies, should you miss your punch or fuck up the grenade toss.

As for super jumping, it's a way out when you're surrounded and otherwise have very few options. You could attempt a fully-charged punch, which would wipe out a sizable portion of the crowd, but would make you an easy target for any survivors. You could use a shield booster and try to power through the crowd while the invulnerability lasts, but there's probably a better time to use those. Since weapons need to reload, it's unlikely that you have sufficient firepower to clear yourself a way out, and the stronger weapons have splash damage that'll tear your shield apart, not to mention how many new assholes the enemies would be tearing you the entire time. If I had to pick between potential map breaking jumps or getting fucked up because of stronger, smarter enemies and a limited amount of damage that can be done before needing to reload, I think I'd pick the potential map breaking jumps. I don't break maps on my first playthrough, and if it's not my first playthrough, what's it matter? The mod isn't multiplayer compatible in the first place, so the only person who can "ruin the experience" is yourself.

>> No.959705

>>959685
>>959702
I understand that it can't be everyone's cup of tea, but you shouldn't be all "2EZ SHIT MOD" just because the player has regenerating shields.

Hell, you know what other mod has regenerating health? Hideous Destructor. Go on, tell me more about how easy that one is.

I suggest BFG edition does some decent changes to DOOM 3, but the classic DOOM games included are butchered. Playing through these for the first time since I was a kid where I cheated through parts of the game and never completed them.

I'm amazed at how much fun Im having with Doom 1. A few years ago I picked it up on XBL and wasn't really interested, but it's totally different this time. No idea what changed it either. The maps are a fucking blast to explore and I love that as I get to newer episodes in Doom everything starts too look more fucked up/creepy and demonic.

Starting to think between this and SMT4 I really like stuff that deals with heaven, hell, angels, and demons. I like to see all the fucked up interpretations that artists make for demons and shit in games.

The only negative thing is I've heard Im playing Censorship Master Race edition by playing Doom 1 and 2 from the Doom 3 BFG Edition.

alright, im getting tired of this

so I'm following this tutorial for 3D floors in ZDoom
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rsLrwFlhME

they instruct me to grab a svn version of Doom Builder (i'm using the one posted in Feb 25 2013) to make this, and then i follow ALL the steps correctly

but when I get to this part i don't see the floor being shown like it is in the video, and also I can't raise them from below, there's no texture at all. The dummy sector is correctly linked with the sector inside the room, and it has been tagged correctly. As you can see i'm using zdoom in hexen format so there's no way i can be doing wrong.

I have zdoom 2.7.1 linked with this DB, and the video was posted 1 year ago, so if my suspicions are right there's no need to grab a svn version of zdoom for this shit.

please help me

In normal zdoom builder visual mode I can't see the floors (but when I test the map they DO appear), however, when I open the map in gzdoom builder and switch to visual mode I can see them properly! (and of course when I test the map they display normally)

so that means that I must switch between both versions to make 3d floors an get my work done?

i see, thanks.

but now that i think of it, maybe i should keep gzdoom builder for the 3d floor stuff so i can get a visual display of what I'm doing, because i know that at some point i'm going to screw up something and everything's going to look messed up.

the guide you posted was very helpful and it's even simpler than chubz's approach (I know it's the same thing but in different order but somehow it's more faster to read a tutorial rather than watching a 10 min. video about it), but like i said, i NEED that visual guide to realize what I'm doing.

thanks for the help!

Alerted enemies path directly to the player, no matter where they are.

Its how people do teleporting enemies. You make a closed room with hear-through walls so that if you make a sound, the enemies walk towards you. You surround the room with teleporters that lead to some place in the room you are in.

Make a noise = enemies teleport in. This relies purely on the mechanic that enemies always path to the player.

I'm good at every popular duel map except SSL2. Given a player with equal strategy to mine and only slightly better aim, I'll lose because we'll both control the SSG drops and get spawnkills, but the other player will land more because my aim is something I need to work on. I can pad it out on other maps by baiting the other player and being smart about when I fire but SSL2 doesn't let me do much of that.

It's just less shit compared to things like Swan Fox, because WildWeasel is a clever dude.

It also did "anime mod" right because the idea isn't to ape the anime art style (which doesn't fit with Doom) but rather the crazy mechanics/weapons and action.

It's actually pretty good, especially for a 1996 map with only one review that seems to care more that they got the first review than whether the map was any good or not. Very brown, and annoying if you end up without a radsuit due to all the high-damage floors, but the map gives you more than enough so it'll only really happen if you backtrack for health pickups. There was a dick move at the end of the map with an archvile, but I was quick enough that I managed to back up and take cover (only to step out too soon and get my ass blasted anyway). Lots of obscure secrets that you wouldn't find unless you UNF everything, and I was stumped on how to get to the exit for a good minute or so before realizing that it's the one door you have to shoot to open in the map. It's textured more like a lift than a door, so that threw me off.

Overall, 3/5. Good effort for 1996. With some better texturing it could almost pass as a recent map.

Are there any good RIP AND TEAR-type WADs for Ultimate Doom? Ones that have awesome MIDI metal music and the fast paced feeling that Knee Deep in The Dead gave?

Hey, in the FAQ part where it says "Other games" can you put this link in the Duke Nukem 3D part? http://pastebin.com/ywSx8g9E those are all links for the full game

UV -fast
Only way to play, and what Nightmare should've been.

Personally I prefer nightmare with double ammo and respawning monsters turned off.

How about a mode were you can kill monsters in one shot but you only have as much ammo as there are monsters?

Never liked double ammo. essentially made it nigh impossible to run out.

Double ammo, turned off. As in not on. As in I don't like it.

Did you guys know that barons of hell and hell knights can actually infight each-other and can target each-other?

>> No.968097

>>968086
Yeah. Anything can infight with anything that damages it. If a monster's able to hurt itself with an exploding barrel, it'll melee ITSELF to death in retribution.

>> No.968104

>>968086
i didn't know that
i wonder who wins in a 2v1 between knights and barons.
talking about that, why aren't these knights not wearing armor?

>> No.968106

>>968097
Anything that fires a projectile wont infilct damage on the same type of monster if it is the projectile attack. same goes for hell knights and BoH's. But yes the barrel will allow it to happen.

>> No.968112

>>968106
That's why the phrase "that damages it" was included, yes. It's the reason Pain Elementals and Archviles don't draw fire. The PE attacks via Lost Souls, and the Archvile's coded to not prompt retribution.

>> No.968123

>>968104
I didn't wait to watch this for too long, since there projectiles don't actually harm each other. They just throw hundreds of missiles at each other, and they will occasionally scratch when infighting which does harm them. However it took forever for them to scratch another once, so to see who would have won the fight would have taken too long even with fast monsters. I just let them simulate morrowind combat and wave at the air and I continued the level cause I wanted to save my ammo.

>why aren't these knights not wearing armor? (Double negative.)

Well they aren't conventional knights if you could believe that so I don't actually know.

sorry about that, i guess i need sleep
and yeah, it's just that i think they went with the easy way doing a simple recolor.
i'm sure they could look pretty nice with bits of armor here and there
>but they already look nice
that's because the barons already look nice

Am I a fag for strafing?

>> No.968159

No? It was in vanilla Doom. Hell, Wolf3D has a strafe key.

>> No.968163

>If a monster's able to hurt itself with an exploding barrel, it'll melee ITSELF to death in retribution.
That was only in early versions of vanilla Doom. It doesn't work in later versions and it definitely doesn't work in the source ports most of us use.

>> No.968172

>>968163
They can retaliate based off of barrel damage they just cannot kill themselves.

Even if I'm using "A" to strafe left and "D" to strafe right? Is that... "cheating"?
>New doom fag here trying to play Doom as Vanilla as posible.

>> No.968183

>>968179
It's not. You could rebind your controls and there were dedicated strafe left/right buttons. You can use the mouse, too, just not for looking up or down.

Of course, if you're trying to play as close to vanilla as possible, you could just use Chocolate Doom or PRBoom and not have to worry about it.

Thanks anon, I just got Chocolate Doom.
Vanilla Doom 2 looked like this?

>> No.968260

>>968249
>Chocolate Doom supports using high resolution screen modes. However, the game itself is still rendered at the original 320x200 resolution used by the DOS executables. This is then scaled up to fill the screen (or window).

>Many other source ports add "proper" high resolution support. Chocolate Doom aims to behave and play the same as the original Doom executables. This includes the screen resolution.
>This does, of course, raise the question of why you would want to use a higher resolution mode in the first place, rather than just running in 320x200 in the first place.

Never mind, thanks.

I don't exactly get why people use those filters in opengl ports. it just makes everything look blurry.

non-blurry sprites contrast too much with the enhanced background (and that's even worse with the hd texture pack)
