Here’s some opinions on some

>Sonic 1, 2, 3, Sonic & Knuckles
- outstanding games, the peak of the series, some of the best platformers ever
>Sonic CD
- absolutely hated it. Too easy and too boring
>Sonic 1 & 2 for Game Gear, Sonic Triple Trouble
- really great games, delightfully challenging and full of replay value. Triple Trouble in particular is one of my favorite Sonic games
>Sonic Spinball
- a really weird but really awesome game
>Sonic 3D Blast
- severally underrated, a really fun one
>Mean Bean Machine
- solid puyo puyo version although not my favorite, a lot of fun if you liked the cartoon growing up
>Sonic Drift 2
- my favorite cart racer not named Mario Kart
>Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
- decent game. Some of it I found pretty cringe, but was engaged enough to finish it.

I tried playing Sonic 1 the other day and the game itself is pretty average in terms of difficulty but holy shit it's so fucking hard to collect all of the emeralds. I just can't, FUCK those bonus stages. Probably need to give it another go, I want to beat all of the mainline Mega Drive Sonic games with all chaos emeralds

I see this take being posted a lot more often in recent years, and I couldn't disagree more. I know it's a matter of taste, and if you don't enjoy something I do then that's fine really, but I can't help but feel that a lot of people don't give Sonic a fair enough shot and end up missing out on experiences they might've loved otherwise. When it comes to Sonic, the reason you run into things and get hit is because, well, you're going fast and, depending on how quick your reflexes are, you might not be able to react to things in time, it's something that varies from player to player and that's fine, but I can see why some would go through this and assume that it's all memorization...

Still, all video games require us to memorize sections we're having trouble with, and we're not supposed to be good at a video game as soon as we pick it up, it'd be shallow otherwise, if you could just run and win, then no one would've cared about Sonic, it's a franchise that rewards you for sticking around. One more thing that can help, is that Sonic's vulnerable when he's just running, but not when he's jumping... or rolling into a ball, always make sure to press down in slopes, not only do you gain speed, but you also protect yourself. Also, if you prefer something like Mario, then I can't recommend Sonic's 8bit library enough, they're a lot more Mario like than the original Genesis installments, Sonic 1 is excellent on both Game Gear and Master System, if you go for Sonic 2 then always pick the Master System version, otherwise it's too punishing, but if you go for Sonic Chaos then go for Game Gear, otherwise it's too simple. I hope you can give Sonic another fair shot, but if you prefer not to then that's your choice, but trust me, they're excellent video games.

>Sonic Jam (3D world)

>Sonic Adventure
The beginning of the end. Still, for 1998 these graphics were amazing.

>Sonic the Hedgehog
Followed all the media/promotion before release. Still have a couple copies of the original US promotional comic handed out stored somewhere. The game did not disappoint and lived up to the hype.

>Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Was at a trade show and it was the featured title. The Sega goons did not allow a picture of me to be taken with the preview build game. Fond memories.

>8-bit
Only have the first one. No one likes Master System.

>Sonic the Hedgehog CD
My favorite of the whole franchise. Music is amazing. Prefer Japanese soundtrack, but US is nice too.

For 8-bit demakes they're fairly good. Much more difficult then the 16-bit games.

I love its atmosphere/music/art design but the level design is kinda whatever.

>Sonic 3 & Knuckles
I love this the most, but replay it the least out of the 3 main games just because of its length, and when I play it I like to go it all in one go. Don't always have time for that.
>Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine
I like puyo-puyo but I just can't be bothered to invest the time to git gud at chaining.
>Sonic 3D Blast
I love it, though I can understand why some people don't, isometric games aren't for everyone.

Never played the 8-bit games much aside from the first GG one, and I honestly barely remember them, so i'd just be talking out my ass if I gave an opinion. Same goes for the Sonic Advance games, I only played them a little bit.

True. I suppose I was in that sweet spot to enjoy it, I was born in 87 and my mum bought me an SMS with Sonic in 91. >Sonic the Hedgehog
Good proof of concept, every stage after Green Hill isn't very fun.

>(plus 8-bit)
More fun than the Genesis one overall.

>Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Way better than the first game, best base model for a 2D Sonic game.

>(plus 8-bit)
Way too easy, lacks the care and effort felt in the first SMS/GG title.

>Sonic the Hedgehog CD
Great music no matter which version you play, needs a couple playthroughs to truly appreciate. Horribly lame bosses.

>Sonic Spinball
Like Sonic 1, only good for the first stage.

>(plus 8-bit)
Unplayable watered-down version of the 16-bit game.

>Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (& Knuckles)
Oozes with character and charm, but way too easy compared to Sonic 2, especially if playing as Tails or Knuckles. Sonic 3-specific music is better.

>Sonic Eraser
Play it to kill time.

>Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car
Never played it.

>Sonic Popcorn Shop
Never played it.

>SegaSonic the Hedgehog
Fun after you've acclimated to a trackball controller, a bit lame none of the characters have any differences.

>Sonic Chaos
Stupidly too easy. Play it once then never again.

>Sonic Triple Trouble
Better version of Chaos overall.

>Sonic the Fighters
Unbalanced Fighting Vipers clone, fun as a curiosity

>Sonic R
A fun little time waster, good for just messing around in as long as you don't go in expecting Mario Kart. Music's good.

>Tails Skypatrol
Would be a lot better if the gameplay was easier to figure out.

>Tails Adventure
A fun RPG, but annoying to play without a guide.

>Knuckles Chaotix
Good in concept but the randomized unintuitive stage design kills the fun. Looks and sounds beautiful, but Metal Sonic's presence in the game is completely wasted.

>(plus 8-bit)
Watered down version of the 16-bit, no reason to play it.

>Sonic 3D Blast
Requires investment to play. Saturn version is better gameplay and graphics-wise, music choice is up to tastes.

>Sonic Jam (3D world)
Fun as a curiosity. Largely unnecessary now.

>Sonic Adventure
Unpolished, but fun as hell. The base model for 3D Sonic games for a time.

>Sonic Shuffle
Requires 4 human players because the unbalanced AI ruins the game. Very fun if you have these 4 humans.

>Sonic Adventure 2
More polished than SA1 but also cut-down content wise. Still fun to play.

>Sonic Heroes
Even more cut down than SA2, doesn't live up to repeated playthroughs. Graphically very ugly.

>Shadow the Hedgehog
Poorly designed, weapons are completely arbitrary and controls are way too slippery. Not worth the time to unlock all the branching paths.

>Sonic Advance
Solid 2D Sonic experience, ranks with the best of them.

>Sonic Advance 2
Not as fun as Advance 1 due to reusing the same boss concept over and over. Playing as Cream completely breaks the game.

>Sonic Battle
Well designed, but marred by unbalanaced difficulty and unnecessary immediate rematches. Very frustrating.

>Sonic Advance 3
Partner system doesn't hold up gameplay-wise. Easily skippable.
