Recommended tate shmups for newbies to the Genre

I’ve played many horizontal shooters from classic consoles but want to take the dive into cave games. So far I’ve tried donpachi and dodonpachi with great difficulty.

What got you into bullet hells/shmups?

Also stick vs controller?

/vr/ approved shmups (in order of most to least approachable):
>Soldier Blade

>1941 (play JP version)
>Super Aleste/Space Megaforce
>Daisenpuu (play JP version)
>Hishouzame

>Gunbird
>Raiden Fighters Jet

Someone here said Tiger-Heli was a good beginner shmup, but I watched a Shmup Junkie video where he said it was too hard for beginners. What do you guys think?

>> No.9590473

>>9590467
Tiger-Heli is probably the best beginner shmup there is as it forces you to learn all of the basics to complete it without dying, and also has very forgiving checkpoints. Ideally, you want to practice sections without dying though, as you can just brute-force through sections with dying.

It's just a very basic game that beginners would probably find too primitive/boring, and the main flaw is just that the terrain and enemies are so limited that it's hard to actually know/memorize which section you're at because it all flows together.

Gradius II Famicom version. I really, really hated Gradius ever since I played the first game for the NES. I didn't really know how do get good at the game after losing my power-ups time and time again, and with not enough power-up capsules to recover, I gave up. Years later I played Famicom version of the second game and I finally started to catch on, eventually mastering this particular game and taking on the others in the series.

With the R-Type games I've only played the arcade, Super R-Type and R-Type III. Three is my favorite of those, and Final just edged it out for my top 9. I love the force system and power-ups in that game, but after the first level the game becomes incredibly hard.

Nice. III is a favorite of mine too but 1 will always have the nostalgia factor since it was one of my first STGs. Delta is also really good. It's fast paced by R-Type standards and it rewards you quite nicely for using your force pod as a battering ram.

All depend on what you are looking for.

Any shmup can be your first it really, depend on the dedication you want to poor on it, even more true when nowdays you have training tools, adjustable auto fire, rewind and save states which make the training way more efficient and short.

Also be aware that some games can be average to hard to 1CC but very hard to insane 2ALL ( 2nd Loop), some Psikyo games are like this for example.

Now for the recommendation I try to give you some easily emulated or game available on steam or ACA :
Relatively easy.
Dariusburst AC : depend on the route but it mostly easy/mild hard at best for an 1CC)
Akai Katana got released last month it's a mild difficulty cave with a lot of thing to learn from.
Area 88 is fun arcade game you may learn movement and placement, learning curve is kind of flat but expect a small pick at level 5. give the snes/sfc version a try too.

Normal
R-type leo is kind of the same you may also learn some stuff about force and option (harder at level 4).
Fighting Hawk is close to Area 88 but as a verti. not too hard not too easy
Metal Black is between the 2 but you won't learn that much from as the game is weird AF.
some others weird shmup ; fun but wont learn much from them.
Xexex mild 1CC on the japanese version. (2all is another story)
X-Multiply is slightly harder to 1CC but at least you won't have a burnout dealing with it 2ALL even if it's hard.

Mild hard
Game Tengoku is cute nice and fun and you will learn tons of shit and tricks, but 2ALL is on another story, way too hard for it own good.
Dragon Spirit is old but it one of my favorite games ever, it come from a time where you needed a separate button to shoot sol enemies. Maybe a little bit long and learning curve can be a bitch.
Outzone depend on the version and weapon management can be a nice game to pick.

Also most Psikyo and Cave games 1CC can be put here.

TFIII is good if you want a quick n easy 1cc with some really banging Genesis tunes. Actually, I should have included Gley Lancer on my list for that same reason.

TFII is a lot different from its sequels in that it alternates between sidescrolling and top-down free range shooting (like Asteroids) It's good once you're adjusted to it tho

Other shmups I've beaten which should be ok fo beginners: Thunder Force 3, Wonder Boy 3: Monster Lair (beaten on hardest). Zero Wing (stayed up a whole night to beat it, last few levels were pretty hard for me). GleyLancer. Battlemania. I've tried Gunhed and it's easy until last level that filters me big time. Elemental Master. Ye, i've mostly played on MD.

Missile, Vertical, laser doesn't matter, R.Option, reduce, and either full barrier or mega crush

That's how I got my first 1cc anyway, With vertical and missile, plus rotating options you basically annihilate everything in front, above and below you without having even think. Reduce seems like the best shield by far as not only does it reduce your hitbox, and still acts as a shield and absorbs multiple hits

I saw a horizontal shmup in an arcade cabinet a long time ago, must have been mid/late 90s. The attract mode showed a "wall of guns" type boss and one of the weapons it had shot diagonal laser bolts that had a candy cane-like spiral pattern. I can't really remember anything else for sure.
