>tfw nearly 30 and still scared of OoT
I got the game when I was aorund 7 and was too scared to play it, and in the years since I've picked it up a few times and enjoy the first few hours, but the zombies scare the fuck out of me. I have to turn the sound off and take abreak every few minutes.
I'm really embarrassed about this and I'm sure everyone thinks I'm trolling but I'm not, this game (and majora's mask) really scare and unnerve me.

>> No.9587002

Honestly Im kinda jealous, Ive played it so many times and play rando for it on like a weekly basis that Im just so used to jumpslashing redeads and using ISG every encounter that its hard to take the imposing atmosphere as a threat in some parts which is sad because the game has a killer sense of it, it's phenomenal. I still sometimes sit in grottos and stare at the fish and soak in the ambience though, those are my favorite areas

Should you be embarrassed? I dunno, maybe. I think it speaks to how well this game nailed ambiance. The difference between how the town feels as a kid compared with seven years later is enormous, and the redeads are genuinely creepy as fuck. I got a little scared of Wind Waker redeads as a kid, and not at all by the redead knights in Twilight Princess, but OoT and MM redeads are really disturbing, even today. I'm not too scared to play it nowadays, but accidentally jumping from the Kakariko warp point directly into the Royal Family Tomb on my brother's file was enough to make eight year old me spaz out and switch the game off from terror.

How do you feel about actual horror games, like.. Resident Evil and Silent Hill?
Horror movies? you ever watch those.

Curious if its just Zelda or actual fear for spoopy stuff.

>> No.9587318

None of that fantasy shit scares me. There will never be real zombies or ghosts or any of that bullshit. The only real horror comes from human beings, all the most fucked up shit I've ever heard of came from news articles, not movies or comic books.

They didn't need to, there were such ratings in the japanese and european markets at that time and the ESRB only had three ratings (since A for adults only was very rare) and the difference between E and T had more to do with language or sexual-ish content than anything because >implying americans ever had a problem with violence

I think it's an issue of standards changing. Nowadays, you'd get an E10+ or T rating from those elements. In the late '90s, however, people seemed to just care less about the degree of violence that appeared in children's media. So, you could get away with a little blood and death, especially if it was subtly put in.

The clearest example of "they could never get away with that today" in an E-rated game I can think of is Mega Man X4. One cutscene has a character slash some others in half as dark red blood splatters everywhere. Even with the whole "they're robots, so it's not really blood" defense, that scene seemingly got the X Collection a T rating alone.

Fagddit-tier comment. Turok got an M rating, and it has no sexual content.

If it takes Turok or Mortal Kombat to get M ratings, maybe there is something to it.
Friendly reminder that parental advisory labels on records took off because of sexual content in hip hop, not because of gore in heavy metal art covers and violent lyrics in either.

I really wish Hyrule Field looked like pic-related when you're Adult Link. Having the skies immediately be bright and sunny with the heroic field music back playing immediately makes you forget there's any agency going on and I call that a misstep from the game.

I'm in the same boat as OP, however I disagree about the fire temple. I wanted to go into the fire temple because I figured it was the last place zombies would be. You typically don't hear about zombies near fire/lava. Then when I finally got in there, I thought the chanting was cool as fuck, made the fire temple much more atmospheric. I thought I could eventually find the guys that were chanting if I looked hard enough in the temple.

I remember being four years old and visiting the house of my mom’s friends. They were older than me, and they showed me OoT. I never had a console as a kid so my experience of vidya was limited. The one thing I remember is them going out on to Hyrule field: the sun sets, night falls, and suddenly these creepy skeletons appear. And it wasn’t so much the skeletons that scared me as the idea that you could be in someplace safe and canny and then it could dynamically change just like that. It blew my mind.

I was easily scared by vidya as a kid. Even now I admit that I have trouble playing horror games because I get too jumpy

What I found the strangest upon replaying this game recently was that Big Poes are the only enemies in Hyrule Field when you're an adult. That, but also Sega failing hard while still trying to push the "cool and radical games your parents HATE" angle.
Meanwhile Nintendo were slowly but surely understanding that making games that parents will buy by default for their kids is a goldmine. Hence the steady supply of half-assed Mario games on the DS. That way when some mom needs a present for little Timmy's 8th birthday it's "ah yes the Mario game on the Nintendo, it looks like a cartoon so it's gonna be fine". Then she sees a reassuring "E for fucking normies" rating and that's all she needs to know.
Though the real winners of the ratings wars were the DS shovelware publishers in the mid and late 2000s when they could put out any low-effort game that looked safe enough, got the right rating and would immediately look good to parents.
