Was the original Kirby considered good upon release? It didn't have transformations yet.

>> No.9583476

I remember liking it enough but it was hilariously easy even for an 8 year old. I remember wanting it because the commercial showed Kirby flying and I couldn't wrap my head around how a game could be hard if you had infinite flight. At the time my only frame of reference for that was the Mario 3 P-Wing so I needed to see for myself. Turns out it was exactly as easy as it looked.

Judging by how hard they've tried to make a "badass" impression for him and ensure sales in US, it could meet some problems at launch.

But it performed decent enough to make way for sequels, I guess

The transformations just bogged the franchise down more and more and the floating and momentum became worse
2 is still the best

the first and last good kirby game was this kino

I enjoyed the hell out of this game as a kiddo.

I also unironically would play it by limiting my HP to 1 though. I forget how you could lower your total HP, but once you did that, the game was extremely kino. You have to remember this game was made on the chunky Gameboy and only cost like $20 in stores.

inhale + flying is a good enough moveset to support a game on its own. transformations just made a solid foundation even better.

Even after they added transformations, some of the most fun stuff in kirby games is when you lose your hat and need to play using just inhale.

>It didn't have transformations yet.
Yes but since transformations weren't a thing yet in the series, no one could count that as a negative.

It was. It was a Game Boy exclusive by Nintendo with a new IP, and it was very good. Graphics, gameplay and music were whimsical fun. It was short and easy, but that wasn't a downside much back then with a Game Boy game like that.

I played the shit out of it on the brick. It was a nice change up from playing SML1-3, Zelda, Tetris, Dr. Mario, Donkey Kong, Final Fantasies etc...

It's fun to play through on the hard mode

>> No.9584023

I didn't play it at launch but did play it on the gray brick when I was a kid, and I really liked it. It's just a fun, good-looking game with a good soundtrack. The absence of copy abilities is made more palatable by the inclusion of a few powerups. This game, its sequel, Link's Awakening, Tetris, Donkey Kong and Yoshi's Cookie were my shit as a kid.
>>9584006
Agreed, and it doesn't take much time to beat both modes.

The first kirby for Gameboy might be the best most cleanly designed platformer on the console. I fucking love it

>Was the original Kirby considered good upon release?
Yes, it was great for a gameboy game.

>> No.9584471

I remember it getting decent reviews but alors some flak for being too short and easy.
It obviously didn't matter since the game was great anyway and kids loved it.
