Was Sunshine pushed out early to meet a holiday or something? It lacks the usual Nintendo polish.

The game itself doesn't lack polish, it just feels like there should've been more content but we ended up with the blue coins instead

No but a certain time of year. Obviously zoomers can't know this but you should be able to imagine which one anyway. Also Metroid Prime, Zelda, etc. wanting to be released too

It lacks a LOT of polish. It's horribly unfinished and clearly shows.

Shiggy Moto has that damn quote about delaying a game then rushed out the ONLY Mario game on the Gamecube.

Stupid follow up to Mario 64. Major misstep.
Who at nintardo thought it was a good idea to follow up what is considered the perfect 3D platformer with a gimmick game? You don’t do a gimmick for a mainline, system seller title.
They thought this was going to take down Halo and MGS2? Should have just made a more direct sequel to Mario 64 which is what people wanted. This + making Zelda cutesy in this era of gaming were just significant missteps.
I had this back when it was new and it was just so meh. Good thing I had Rogue Squadron 2.
GameCube deserved it’s third place finish.

The same person that thinks it's useless to make games and consoles without fun innovations. I hope you do realize the GameCube itself was a gimmick, has a handle so you can pick it up and go visit your friend and maybe even share one, and the controller itself has a gimmick button placement and triggers, the latter of which Sunshine was literally designed around

And that's a good thing because it makes Sunshine unique and worth returning to today for all the things it does the other games don't do. Same goes for 64, Galaxy and Odyssey

>> No.9579558

I'd say sunshine is polished but unfinished. It's three quarters of a great Mario game. Corona Mountain in particular is an insultingly bad final level.

Seriously, fuck off. What the fuck does unfinished even mean? Where is it obvious they didn't "finish" the game? You're just talking out of your stupid ass. I'm tired of these retarded nonsensical "critiques" you edgy contrarians shit out. Do you really think Nintendo didn't finish their AAA main Mario game of the generation? It's just completely made up bullshit. Sure Corona Mountain sucks but it doesn't mean it's "unfinished" whatever fuck that means. Idiot.

If you were in charge of Nintendo, and you knew the competition was intense, would you make a direct sequel to a last gen game that was awarded 10/10 by basically ever major publication…or would you release Mario with a water gun?
If you were in charge, would you make a Zelda sequel that carries over the themes and style of your 10/10 adventure game…or would you make a baby looney tunesesque cartoon sailing game in the age of GTA and LotR?
I’m not even saying they are bad games, I’m saying they were obvious missteps that hurt Nintendo.

Innovation doesn’t always mean “different for difference sake”, especially when this means you’re not leading the industry a second generation in a row.

I'm dead serious. It's perhaps the best Mario has ever been in terms of controls. The levels manage to be diverse while sharing the same aesthetic. The level design compliments Mario's moveset perfectly. The game is clearly unfinished but those 2/3ds of the game that we got are polished as hell

They literally cut dungeons from Wind Waker. There is a reason Metroid Prime is considered to be a flagship first party title and is rated higher than GC's Mario and Zelda

>> No.9579634

Its still one of the best looking games of the generation, could even argue that it holds up better than galaxy. The dev team probably underestimated how long it takes to make worlds that don't just look like a playtest placeholder.

>> No.9579890

I found sunshine uniquely unfun, massive empty levels with way too much negative space built to justify the existence of fludd, extreme fatigue over the setting, and way too much tedium. It reuses the same objective in different stages too much and the blue coins basically being the main content was a huge mistake. If the content isn't good, cut it. Too much fat, not enough substance. Mario can move with the best of em but if all the levels suck there's no point, and damn do they suck.

I know the anon saying it's the best platform game of the generation is an obnoxious fanboy, but you can't attack turtle interruptions in sly 2 when you defend a game with fludd.

That's the entirety of Sunshine. At least Sly 2 had a story that made sense & worthwhile missions compared to the Italian Janny.

I like Sunshine despite its faults. I like Delphino, Piantas and the overall aesthetic. But holy fuck is it unfinished. It's even more baffling in hindsight because every mainline Mario game after it has the regular amount of care and polish to it, making Sunshine really stand out.
There's less shit to explore, horrible missions like the watermelon and lily plant bullshit, some bad hitboxes and glitches. Luigi's Mansion being essentially a tech demo and Wind Waker having chunks of cut content make it clear that Nintendo had no clue what they were doing after being dabbed on by Sony.

>> No.9580872

It just felt .... uninteresting to explore the environments.

The tropical theme is not really used to the fullest and the game peaks early when you bounce around Delfino Plaza. There's zero memorable content after that other than the abstract special levels.

More like, cut the ending off and sell it 6 months later for 20 dollars. The modern video game industry is absolutely shameless in this regard. Just look at Cyberpunk 2077, why stuff like that is legal is beyond me. Say what you want about Nintendo but they don't do this.
