5th gen was the first with functional 3d.
6th gen was the first where you could actually make it look like the concept art

Bit like nes vs snes

Genesis and SNES had some surprisingly nice looking 3D games, whether it was Virtua Racing with the SVP chip, Star Fox, or something like Kawasaki Super Bike Challenge which just used a really convincing pseudo-3D system. SEGA CD and 32X also had some very nice looking 3D games.

>>9574160
I'm convinced the 3DO would've done better had they not bogged it down with so many FMV titles. Already had Madden and FIFA with 3D graphics which probably looked mindblowing for their time.

4th gen had functional 3D too, though. Virtua Fighter 32X is arguably better than the Saturn port. Starblade for SEGA CD is also worth checking out imo, it's completely pre-rendered but really feels like an early 3D Saturn game with its low-poly look

Nah, but it's the first console with visuals based on the same identifiable general principles as more modern graphics. Which sadly amounts to literally the worst looking performance on that regard, and without the somewhat accidental aesthetic appeal of earlier and more primitive systems.

Ehhh.. not really. "Good looking" is primarily subjective to the time. 32x had the first good looking 3d games (plural, and starfox was technically impressive, not pretty). DC was however the first console to rival its arcade contemporaries in 3D. The 2D honor belongs to Neo Geo.

Just a reminder that Dreamcast is comparable in technology to the PlayStation 2, and people who associate it with last-gen consoles like the PS1, Saturn, and N64 are huge retards.

32x still used horrendous shortcuts and workarounds for 3d games.

Dreamcast was the first console to do good 3d with no compromises. First console that could really bring home the arcade 3d experience from systems like the Model 2.

I think of it more as a type of a PC + supergun tbqh. Its graphics *feel* PC-ish more than the PS2 ever did. Probably because the GPU is very close to PC GPUs of the time.

Who does this?
The DC was a 480p console, of course it's matched with a PS2.

>>9574670
The PS2 could never run Shenmue or Sonic Adventure 2 at the same quality. Both systems have their pros and cons
Also
>RE4 on PS2
lol
Besides the DC had support for expansion pack-type hardware, and if the system was successful it could have received additional power to make it match the Naomi 2 arcade board in compute power, which is a way more powerful system than the PS2. That's how the DC could compete with Xbox/GC if everything went right.

>> No.9574724

RE4's desaturated look probably had something to do with the "higher" quality of graphics.

>if the system was successful it could have received additional power to make it match the Naomi 2 arcade board in compute power
I highly, highly, highly doubt this would have happened even if the Dreamcast was the #1 best selling system in the world and beating the competition.
Sega would have been extremely gun-shy about releasing any kind of power add-on for the Dreamcast.
The launch model DC was going to be able to play the whole library the whole way through the system lifespan and not a bit less.
Or at least that would have been my orders from on high if I was Isao Okawa.

>Sega would have been extremely gun-shy about releasing any kind of power add-on for the Dreamcast.
They're retarded enough to try this sort of shit again.
But depending on pricing it could work.
They did plan for this anyway, the DC has rails on the bottom made for this. That pic is an extension for a working zip support prototype, that's a normal DC on top of it.
It wouldn't be far fetched to believe they had other plans including increasing the console's power if the thing was successful and needed it
Because how else would the DC run VF4? VF was a huge deal for Sega back then and they would port it on console no matter what the cost.
If not for more power, they would need to downgrade it by a lot if they were to port it on the base Dreamcast, even more than the PS2 version. The naomi 2 basically double the naomi/DC CPU/GPU + a transform and lightning graphic chip. I think a DC expansion pack could do with just adding another GPU and the T/L chip and some more ram.
The console was already cheap to produce in the first place so by the time Sega would feel the need to add more power to the console in say 2002-2003, those chips would be already 5 year old.
It's just a fun theory I think about sometimes, but I think it could have worked. IIRC there were rumors about this back then.

You're going to hate me for saying this but:
Virtua Fighter 4 wasn't really that important to the Dreamcast platform. Not on the world scale.
The people who really cared about VF would just play it in the arcades.
It would be ported with downgrades and that's all. Later get a better release with a Dreamcast 2.

True. I remember when it came out. Games were in high res, and a silky smooth 60fps. It was like the N64 with the expansion pack, but with more polygons, better textures and no longer a 15fps. It was pretty awesome.

But everyone knew at the time that SEGA fucked up big time since the Genesis, and this amazement was going to be short lived. Sony and Nintendo were going to shortly release new much more powerful systems soon, and same with Microsoft. It was nothing more than a short lived novelty, but it was truly the first system with good looking 3D games, yes.
