I hate the fact that anytime a game does something thats cryptic its seen as bullshit, terrible, garbage mechanics, etc. but its okay when Nintendo does it (LoZ, Metroid). The Hypocrisy for cryptic famicom games is so accepted that its almost embarassing.

Milon's Secret Castle is a victim of success of Tower of Druaga in Japanese arcades. That game was intentionally obtusely cryptic to create a social experience of players sharing secrets they discovered with each other. Arcade cabinets were even supplied with notepads for this reason. Such game design philosophy can fall flat when separated from community, forcing an individual player to discovering everything on their own.
Nintendo's games had an advantage in American cultural sphere of having their secrets published widely in magazines and guides, to the point that they became a part of general gaming lore and many people who did not play those games themselves could hear about their peculiarities through osmosis. People still widely play Zelda and Metroid to keep social experience of circulating gaming secrets going, even if that means just searching for video walkthroughs nowadays. Games which left the mainstream discussion decades ago have no such advantage, leaving their quirks to ancient guides on GameFAQs. It is not so fun to deal with cryptic challenges when you have nobody to parasocially ask for hints.

The adventure elements in Milon's are at a different degree than those of Nintendo games and are more obtuse. I'm sorry you can't tell the difference because for you and your entire generation, anything that doesn't hand hold you through shiny markers becomes "bullshit".

because a small bad aspect of a game doesnt stop it from actually being great. Metroid and both the first LoZ are pretty damn good games, great in a lots of other ways. Milon's secret castle is just a rushjob, its sorely lacking in gameplay and its not intuitively designed(like metroid is)

Nobody thinks this is okay which is why neither of these series do anything cryptic anymore. People think that cryptic things and real puzzles were only there to sell strategy guides, game genies, and the Nintendo Power Line.

For me, there was no "seeing" these games as being too cryptic or not too cryptic - it was a matter of feeling. I was a kid then, I played Metroid and Zelda, and I experienced lots of fun. I also played Milon's Secret Castle and Legacy of the Wizard, and I experienced far less fun (albeit still some). It's something that simply happened to me; I didn't decide to give Nintendo a pass. I barely knew the names of the companies that made games and I didn't care about their identities.
