Can anyone explain to me why I love Tomba/Tomba2 so damn much? It could just be a big nostalgia thing but I'm wondering if anyone here actually considers these games good. I don't think I've ever met another person who recognizes these games and yet I keep coming back to play them. Any of you guys ever played/enjoyed this shit?

I've seen lots of posts saying Tomba1/2 are top tier games. They're also well liked by critics.

I can't get into it though. I don't like the 2D sprites. They're part of that fad in the 90's to make pre-rendered sprites. Never liked those.

It's just fun to play. Shame they ruined the graphics in the second one.

That's probably good, because I don't like pre-rendered sprites. I find them really ugly compared to traditional sprites.

Second game was a step back in a lot of regards, but still a great game.

Are there any other 2d adventuring games like this?

I play Tomba at least once a year. Such a fun little game. Couldn't get into the second one though, no idea why.

You mean Sprites in general?
Fucking idiot.

You are both completely ignorant.

>> No.957056

For the sake of this board I'm gonna attempt to end this idiocy and explain that the use of the term pre-rendered sprites is most likely referring to using CG art as sprites in games such as Donkey Kong Country, Toy Story, and Yoshi's Story.

and you're a fucking idiot if you think sprites are anything but pre-rendered.
Obviously you're the ignorant one.

>> No.957062

>>957058
Pre-rendered sprites refers to 3D objects that are pre-rendered on a workstation and then displayed as sprites on a shitty console. Which the sprites in Tomba obviously aren't.

>>957058
>and you're a fucking idiot if you think sprites are anything but pre-rendered.
You don't know what "pre-rendered" means.

>> No.957079

>>957058
All sprites are rendered by the engine in real-time.

"Pre-rendered sprite" refers to the way the sprite was made, not rendered by the game engine. It means that the source of the sprite is pre-rendered CG. Other way to create 2D graphics include digital or digitized painting, pixel-painting, stop-motion, live-action (Mortal Kombat) and others.

tl;dr you humongous idiot.

Fuck yeah. Am I the only person that enjoyed the second game even more than the first? Either way, both games are fantastic.

>> No.958339

Absolutely. These games, Croc and Jumping Flash were my childhood.

I think the Tomba games are my most replayed games ever. They're just so charming and fun.

Wish I could find whatever the chickenscratch is for the game's title so I can find fanart on pixiv.

I actually like the full 3D better, it's really well done. Even OP's upscaled pic looks great which can't be said for many 5th gen games.
What I don't like is that the framerate had to suffer because of it. The first game is one of the few PS1 gems that ran at refresh rate.

Op, did you ever get to the prize room at the top of the motherfucking long stairs in tomba 2? the one in the water city?
Because I've been wanting to know what's in there for 10 years now and I can't find a video anywhere.
I need to know what's in there
I need it

Tomba! and Tomba!2 have a timeless quality about them. best two action games of their generation IMO

>> No.960326

I destroyed all my videogames in a fit of rage, sadly. I miss tomba and tomba 2.

>> No.960448

Well, I played Tomba 2 quite a lot, so it's the one that gets me the most nostalgic.

My copy was in japanese, so I had to look up everything on the internet to proceed. It was quite the fun time, still.

I bet you hated Donkey Kong Country too, didn't you?

Get outta here, you snob.
