How do you go about completing the video games you play? Do you always stop when the credits roll or are you one of those that loves to collect everything? Are your own preferences regarding this always the same or do they vary depending on how much you've enjoyed the experience up until that point? Do you dedicate completion only for a few selected titles or do you go for it more often than not? I feel that it'd be interesting to see everyone's approaches to this sort of thing, as it's something that kept getting more and more common with each passing console generation, and nowadays it's everywhere, with things like trophies and achievements being quite common to see.

Have you ever deliberately gone for a 100% run before?
What 100% completion are you the most happy with getting?
What was the most difficult 100% you've ever gotten?
Did you ever give up because you couldn't pull it off?

When it comes to this last question, there's another thing that's on my mind... did you ever get 99% completion in something, as in there's only a single thing missing for it to be 100% completed, but you couldn't do that last thing? Wheter it's an item you couldn't find, or a mission you couldn't beat, or a bug within the code that never got properly fixed, etc. If you've ever faced this situation before, either a single time or more, what was your approach? Did you try to force it as much as possible even if it stopped being enjoyable or did you move on from it in a positive way? I usually manage to pull it off, but I won't lie that there have been a few cases in which I couldn't manage it at all.

If it's a collectathon or a game like SM64 where it's clear how many things there are to collect, I do it if I like the game a lot. If it's something like a JRPG and it's not clear what '100%' even means in this case I don't bother. I only do it if it rewards you with the best ending or some shit

The difficulty almost always comes from trying not to kill yourself while doing this because of the tedium, Dragon Quest XI is not retro but the amount of shit this game expects you to do to 100% it is insane, so it's probably this game.
Mario Sunshine if we are talking retro, not only the blue coins but there are also legit hard sections in this game, especially for a 2002 title. It's more challenging than stuff like God Hand, Ninja Gaiden (I've only ever played Sigma but still) or other games from the time if you are going for all the shines

Completionism is fundamentally a simple bait from the developer to artificially and unsubstantially increase your playtime without having to add any realistic content or material whatsoever.

Yes, I personally play most games exclusively for the story, unless they are fighting games or shmups, etc. However, when I play games where it happens to seem that developers placed expectations in their audience to complete achievements or gather collectables of some sort, it quickly come across as rather insulting to me. As an belittling act towards their customers and end consumers with an low effort, easy and silencing practice to keep those busy that want to be kept so. Therefore I happen to associate completionism with superficiality, credulity and mental weakness in others.

No, I did never ever do a 100% run of any kind in any game, because that is simply not worth my time.

It depends. If it's an RPG and I can 100% it on my first playthrough, I might try do it it depending on how difficult it is and how much I'm liking the game, but I rarely touch NG+.
If it's something like Ape Escape, where I need to 100% the game to watch the real ending, then I will gladly do it every single time.

>Go in blind, normal difficulty.
>Trailblaze through the game. Not in a speedrun way, but just doing the bare minimum.
>If the game is interesting I may take things slowly, or just keep it that way if it's okay.
>Either way, beat the game.
>Wait two years.
>Play it again on a harder difficulty/with a guide to complete as much as I can.

I stop the second i don't feel like i'm having fun and experience whatever content i'm missing out on through cheats, savefiles or let's plays, i simply can't be arsed to sit for hours feeling my enjoyment for the game grind away to dust. Most games aren't designed with every player enjoying every last piece of content in mind, anyhow, they're not like albums or movies and it's idiotic to think that one's experience is lesser just because you stopped at the credits roll (barring things like multiple endings, multiplayer-centered games or arcade games where credit feeding ruins the experience). And like >>9563749 said, it's pretty insulting when developers try to sucker you (with a half-completed stats screen or an alternative ending) into dumping hours and hours like you're just a pig being led around by your snout without offering enough worthwhile content in return

Did you really 100% KH1FM though? I filled out the journal, beat every boss and got the most secret ending evah but didn't get the ultimate weapon and all gummi ship parts. And even if I did, would it really count as 100% if you didn't do it on Proud?

I try to give every game a fair chance, to engage with them in their own terms.

For instance, I played metroid on the nes for a few hours. I drew a map, I farmed health before bosses, I got lost. That's a feeling worth feeling, but I had enough, so I moved on.

Games aren't divine artifacts that need to be respected by fully completing them, they are the result of a few (sometimes) talented dudes making stuff up until it's fun to play and then padding it up until it has enough "content" to be sold (particularly obvious in early id games like commander keen and wolfenstein, for example, but also in the aforementioned metroid). It's OK play it while you're getting something out of the experience and drop it when you're no longer having fun. I also don't care about story in videogames, so that's never an incentive to keep playing.

I've been trying to complete Neversoft's Spider-Man (2000/PS1) 100% for the 1st time, I've been trying ever since I was a kid, growing up with this installment, and failing... now I'm an adult though, and I've been trying once again... and failing. I'm at 99% pretty much, just need to do one last thing and that's unlocking the last costume, that's called Quick-Change. Still, to do that I need to get a total of 10.000 points in the Zip-Line training mode, a task that feels impossible, so much so that every version after this one, besides the N64 I think, did change it to 7.500 points, and if this was the score I would've done it long ago, but as it stands I can't do it, and it's getting in the way of my 100% save of one of my favorites ever since I was a kid, and it's a pain.

When looking at Retro Achievements, there is an achievement for doing this, and a very low player base has managed to pull it off, about 5% of them did and that's from a player base of people that'll hunt achievements down, for it to be that low just shows how tough it is...

Any suggestions?

An update, just got 5 scores above 9.000, but none of them were 10.000 or above... I can't stand the fact that one of my favorite games of all time has such an awful stain like this one, I really can't help but think that I'll always fall short and never make it, it's depressing.

something like pieces of heart are lame to me, but if a game has its own dedicated level section just as a challenge for the upgrade then I check it out. its about the journey, not the destination.
its pretty fucking rare that a game actually makes 100% meaningful and fun, usually just the short and sweet games

Most difficult one: not retro either but Bayonetta, so enjoyable though.
Happiest one: My original childhood savefile of Link's Awakening which I completed a few years ago. I was missing 2 heart pieces that were too well hidden, had to look it up finally, but not before exploring as much as I could. Took like 20 years!

Im deranged, and ive fully completed sonic adventure 2 over 10 times: A ranks, chao races, and everything.
and I cant fucking stand getting all emblems in adventure 1. I cannot believe there are people who actually prefer adventure 1 to 2, they surely are not considering either games extra content and are purely talking about the story playthroughs.

so the second and third time through a level is usually really easy. Its like, collect 50 rings and win, or win faster. a little boring if anything, but Big's fishing is an absolute hall of shame deal
to a mentally sane person, its either really easy because you know the trick or you just freaked out and hit every button and eventually figured it out....or its hell.
all you have to do is hold down when a fish bites, and that actually starts the reeling event. Most people, notably arin from game grumps, are not told this at all and they struggle.
the real shit starts when you go for big's extra missions where the fish you need to win is straight up RNG. it will look large and heavy enough and then you put in the effort catching it, and its like 10 kg too light. it took me fucking hours to just find the god damn fish, and its way harder than froggy.
Also the DX missions are garbage. they are either boring busy work or cancer inducing. for one, you have to scour the entire hub world WITH EVERY CHARACTER and activate the mission, then do it.

the other huge problem is that its hard to keep your fucking animals collected. you lose them from switching characters and you get none from playing trial mode. so I spent alot of time doing that shit and my chao are still lvl 0
anyone who just enters and exits levels for an entire day is a fucking loser. sa2 let you keep your chao world inventory when hopping around the main menu, and you had 1 set for hero and dark characters each, and you could enter the chao world right from a stage. its so much more efficient and intuitive.

I was replaying FF7 in misguided hype for the remake. I was doing something like copying over save files i had made and ended up erasing a huge amount of hours when i only had crater left. Discovered i still had my save file from the 90s on another memory card where i could never beat seph so i loaded that up and finally finished it. Felt real good, closure. Did the same in DK64 getting the DK coin and then finally beating Rool and finally finding all the music notes for click clock woods on my old Banjo save.

100% these too but I think it barely counts because it's so fucking easy, you don't have to collect everything (I don't consider chaos emeralds in Sonic to be collectibles, there are only 6-7 of them and they are more like key items)

I usually save 100% for special occasions. If I like and replay a game enough that just completing it becomes second nature, going for 100% is a good way to spice up future playthroughs.
There have also been a few times where I was so enamored with a game and its world, characters, mechanics, etc. that I just wanted any excuse to spend more time with it and literally did not mind if getting 100% was tedious and boring.
Otherwise I tend not to care how (or even if) I complete something

It's really nice to give closure to an old file you started as a kid many years and even decades later.
I forgot I also did the same with Majora's Mask. Didn't 100% my old file, but I did 100%'d it on another one.
I could never 100% OOT, however. Damn skulltulas and one or two piece of hearts that I couldn't find even with a guide, I don't know what the fuck.

Ah, I guess if you count the no-death ending, then I didn't "complete" my childhood file, but I mean I got all heart pieces, upgrades and items. I even found out about the Boomerang, which I had no idea was in the game until recently when I completed my childhood file, blew my mind.
I did beat it without dying on another file, though, but I'm pretty sure I restarted the game the times I died, it's not that easy of a game to do a no-death run "legit", though probably doable.
