I've beaten every FF game I ever started... but for some reason I always drop Dragon Quest 2 or 3 hours in. I find it too simple. What makes you stay anon?

If you want a more complicated game play dq2/dw2. I like the simplicity, the osts and the art style of the games

Just play DQ monsters.

Unironically, the soul.
The story that manages to suck me in despite being conveyed through as little words as possible.
The unmatched monsters graphics in battle that leap of the screen.
The pacing. These games are deliberately slow, if you don't believe that just check 8 and 11 and the pacing of the dialogues and cutscenes. It was always meant to be like that, and that pacing is at the same time soothing and hypnotizing. The musics help sucking you in as well.
Balancing is exceptionally well crafted. The 4 NES games manage to always have the right amount of challenge, starting with 5 they started to fail with that in places though. The amount of exp and gold you gain is always just right, in a way that forces the player to make decisions, and the right ones, both in and out of battles.
There is often the right amount of exploration and freedom as well.

DQ1 is super charming. It's a simple, brief adventure and everything works properly and is intuitive. It's a great entry into JRPGs too. That said, this is the only one I've beaten. I'm near the end of DQ2, but I had to use a map and I'm still really unsure of where to go next. I think I need one final piece to unlock the last dungeon.

I hope they continue to be this interesting, because the not retro one I played was awful and boring and sucked and it lead me to believe all of the games were bad.

Dq5's story is terrible though.

They are quite different, dragon quest is more story oriented and most feel more like a Manga series than FF which feels more like a typical rpg. They're just different flavors, I don't love either but both have their merits.
