hey remember that mini genesis 2 that came out a few months ago? here the roms for it:
https://files.catbox.moe/4spm1f.zip

for space saving only games that differ from known dumps are included. also no sega cd games because they use some custom compression format that hasn't been figured out yet.
all the new games don't work in any of the emulators i've tried but hey it's out there now.

>games that differ from known dumps
What's different about them?

>> No.9539713

For people that don't know about the new games on it:
>The Mini 2 includes seven “bonus games,” two of which are previously unreleased titles, and the others are new ports of games from another platform. The previously unreleased games are Devi & Pii and Star Mobile. The five new ports are Fantasy Zone, Space Harrier 2 (+ Space Harrier), Spatter, Super Locomotive, and Vs. Puyo Puyo Sun.

not sure other than they didn't match known hashes
the only difference i know for sure is that super street fighter 2 replaces the hong kong flag with the china flag (lol)

Family got me one of these for Christmas, no idea how they even knew about it.

I've never owned a mini console before now, I know some people have managed to hack theirs to put more games on it, don't know if that's something that can be done with this thing.

Thanks for this. I can't get the new games to run at all. BlastEm Dev version gives an error or black screen.

they might have some sort of retarded header added to them, or maybe even weakly encrypted

I inspected their headers and did not see anything particularly out of place.

The variations work fine. It's the brand new games they made that aren't working. It's not a huge surprise.

seems .smd is an interleaved format. you probably just have to deinterleave them

>> No.9540276

One difference I'm aware of is that for Bare Knuckle III, Ash's stage and mini-boss fight were removed, skipping a portion of the game by instead taking you to the next playable stage.

https://www.timeextension.com/news/2022/10/sega-removes-controversial-character-from-bare-knuckle-3-on-mega-drive-mini-2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSdmG5D_5OI

Although if that was accomplished through ROM modification or through something like Lua scripting, I wouldn't know.

>>9540265
Is that some rudimentary form of obfuscation to try and deter running the dumps in conventional emulators?
Why do that specifically for the new titles and not all other ROMs in the system?

It doesn't sound terribly difficult to work around though, if someone has the knowledge to correct the data structure.

The new ROMs predictably wouldn't boot in KEGA Fusion 3.64 or Genesis Plus GX v1.7.4 (via Retroarch).

>> No.9540306

>>9539713
What about "sega mark v" roms? Do they use some shit on the emulator side? Unlikely they used Sega 32x patches.

>> No.9540316

>>9540276
Just tested out jp_jp_bare_knuckle_3.bin and it does indeed skip the entirety of Ash's stage.
It's a modified ROM, not scripting done on the Mega Drive Mini 2 itself.

Would be curious if dissecting the ROM would reveal if data was actually removed, or if it just jumps ahead in round 1 by changing an instruction at the end of the first part of round 1.

>> No.9540325

it's actually just an old format

It doesn't appear to be interleaved. The headers are all in plaintext and you can see plaintext strings in the ROM.

Is it possible to add games to the system yet?

>> No.9540365

>>9540326
No success, although the file from OP's zip is "jp_jp_Fantasy_Zone.smd" as an example, converting it to a bin using SBWin didn't achieve anything.
Either ROM functioned the same in Kega Fusion, it just produces noise audio. The CRC32 hash did change, though.

From what I've heard they're deliberately corrupted so they'll only work in the specific emulator. Someone with the right knowhow could probably make a patch for them to work (except for the Space Harrier games since those are made for fantasy hardware).

tricky tricky, well the headers seem ok and they load up. the checksum is off but that doesnt seem to effect other roms, just the unreleased ones. besides ive fixed and headers, checksum and file type (seems they are .bin but labeled .smd) and converting them in numerous different way.im definitely n ot an expert but it seems like only part of the rom is encrypted or maybe has a second header to tell the md mini2 where the rom really starts? im tryi ng to compare star control and sonic 1 with devi and pii. i dont really see much offf, just certain parts of the header and then there is an ASCII table in it at h1880. which i only usually see in old dos game, im not versed enough in console rom hacking to say if that is strange

I tried them on the mega sd and only puyo puyo got to a black screen. I tried them in the exodus emulator using the debugger and it shows that its using some invalid op codes. I don't know much about 68000, I'm more into 8 bit but 68000 has some rigid rules for working code such as instructions being aligned to 2 bytes. I wonder if just putting in a nop for invalid opcodes will make the code go further. I think its just the emulator they used on the mini allowed them to do some shortcuts you can't do on the real hardware. I think even eventually space harrier will work on real hardware using the mega cd for help. I don't know of a way to step through code line by line like you can in emuliscious but it would help a lot.
