This series sold a fuckload in Japan on PS2. In fact, 1&2 were Capcom's biggest games on the platform there, somehow even bigger than RE4 and way bigger than DMC. They had pretty mediocre PS2 era—waited too long with RE4, made one too many RE side series, ran Street Fighter and Mega Man into the ground, the list goes on.

Plus the game has a fair amount of replayability due to the variety of characters intersecting their plot with your plot so you see some interesting perspectives with the addition of those characters having unique gameplay moments when you control them.

I suppose it's my fault, since that happened to me when I beat the first Onimusha, but the very limited amount of healing items fucked me at the final boss. I used them during the game and had almost nothing for the boss. Why the fuck can't you buy them? Or can you and I'm just retarded?

Really though, how did that stop Capcom from doing better on PS2? They made a lot of fuckups on their own, too. Ran Street Fighter and Mega Man into the ground, almost lost relevancy of RE until RE4, never capitalized on the success of Dino Crisis, but still made a whole lot of "whatever" games like Chaos Legion or Auto Modelista.

How do you feel about stuff like Mr. X and Nemesis from Resident Evil? Ayame will hound you like them once you meet her (which is fairly early on in the game). She's pretty tough to get rid of and can shred you if you're not careful, even in late-game. She can be spooky the first few times she appears but after a while it's just annoying when she shows up - I think she can show up almost anywhere in the game, too.

This is the one I played and I don't remember disliking any part of it but it's one of those games I must have been stoned out of my fucking mind the whole time I played just following a walkthrough cause there's only one boss I vaguely remember and nothing about the story. The only reason I got Onimusha originally is because it was bundled with a controller. I can't find evidence of that online, so maybe it was just a CompUSA thing, where I got my PS2. Nice stroke of luck, because I liked it a lot, and 1 and 3 became two of my most played games back then.
I have a fond memory of that Thanksgiving, playing Onimusha when we had family over. My aunts and uncles were watching me play for some reason. Really comfy to recall. The opening to 3 is still awesome and gets me excited to play it.

Deaf composer paid someone for ghost writing. It's complicated stuff. I'm pretty sure licensing it would have been cheaper than paying for a new soundtrack. They most likely wanted to distance themselves from the whole thing. I don't think they cheapen with the soundtrack. Only the backgrounds which they most likely didn't had the assets for.
