What controllers do you use for retro emulation? For the last few years I've used one of these, it just died on me completely. As I understand it from lurking here, there doesn't seem to be any good consensus at all on which gamepads are good or bad, but I'm curious as to what you guys use and your thoughts, and specifically curious about what you think are the best for retro wired gamepads

I sit at my couch when I'm playing so for me being able to use the PS5 touchpad as a mouse is convenient for navigation. The only problem I have with the controller is that the batteries seem to die if I don't turn it off when i power down the computer. There's probably a firmware update to fix it but I don't have a PS5 to hook it up to. I know the Switch controllers can update when you pair them to the system

I dunno, I just bought one of these a few weeks ago partially on this board's advice, and personally I am not crazy about that d-pad. Both the placement of it and the stiffness or "chunkiness" (for lack of a better word) throws me off every time I play a retro game. The analogs are great and it isn't a bad controller by any stretch, but I would recommend someone try these out for a bit if possible before purchasing.

I love it, I use it for everything on my Mister that isn't arcade and all PS2+ stuff on my PC when emulating those. Absolutely no complaints and has a better DPAD than a PS4 and PS5 controller imo. Nice, it might be a me thing honestly. I might like it more once I get used to it a bit more. I don't think the controller is bad or poorly designed or anything. PS4/5/Xbone controller:
>Easiest to get
>Enough buttons for any retro system
>Just werks on modern games if you play those, too
>A little awkward for 6 button
Fighting Commanders:
>Does 6 button and still has shoulder buttons
>Newer ones have analog sticks and buttons for L3/R3 so they're also capable of halfway decent N64 use
>Reliability issues
Buying unique controllers
>More authentic experience, playing games how they were meant to
>Much more expensive. Estimating how much I've spent on controllers, I've probably spent $100 on SNES controllers alone. And I'm not totally satisfied with any of them. This isn't to mention all of the other controllers I've bought, which goes into the $300-400 range. It's kind of a lot considering emulation is supposed to save money, but overall it is still cheaper than buying multiple systems and games and controllers.

they're like a PC hardware company now. idk I have their FC and SFC pads and I think they were a huge meme. The FC Dpad was always too loose, otherwise fine. The SFC Dpad had this hollow feeling and was infamous for letting you press the whole thing in at the center. Sucks if you slide your thumb across the Dpad instead of lifting your thumb off. Buttons also had pretty far travel. I think between buffalo and 8bitdo I'd get an 8bitdoSF30 Pro, the one without the handles. The one with the handles has a fucked Gyroscope. I also got a Club Nintendo SFC controller and everything feels a little too mushy, every button, the entire Dpad. I'm trying to break it in since it was NIB but I'm worried that it's just like this.

Mostly open world games and a few minor outliers like Killing Floor 2 becoming ridiculously easier with the head snap auto aim. I'm using a digital Playstation controller for non-analog games, 3D stuff depends but I do so little of it that I basically use an Xbox controller for non-Playstation systems and whatever DualShock version I can currently get to cooperate for Playstations.

>>9533387
It does but it's a huge pain. The only way I can get DualShock rumble to work the way it does on console is to add Duckstation to Steam so it sees it as an Xinput controller, then change the vibration bias to like 138 in the controller options to actually get it to vibrate each motor correctly. Otherwise Playstation controllers overall don't rumble right when wrapped as Xinput (even the DS4 it turns out, although Duckstation supports that natively) and support for vibration as a Dinput controller is non-existent. I think you can accomplish this in PCSX2 as well (and I think that has some DS3 mode which might work for that controller, or is that RPCS3?) by changing the vibration percentages above 100% but I don't actually use PCSX2 so I'm not going to fiddle with it.

There's an Xbox One converter and I have no idea if it handles it any better and accounts for the different vibration standards or just does the same shit as the software input wrappers.

- the xbox version of the SN30 Pro for systems using that layout
- Retrobit Saturn usb controller for arcade and Megadrive /Saturn

Those two are the primary ones. The classic 8bitdo sfc30 is linked to the snes Bluetooth receiver, and when I am really bored I will dig out the Hori Fighting Stick mini.

I play RPGs with a stick, started with Shining Force when I was sick and wanted to play one-handed. Also nice for dungeon crawlers because you can make a map with one hand and play the game with the other.

Ive been using a hori xbox style wired controller. It gets the job done, although the shoulder button placement feels bizarre after using playstation controllers for years.
I would buy the 8bitdo if I hadnt already bought this one.

I have one and the dead zone on the analogs is fucking horrible. It's a serviceable controller at best, you can't play charge characters in any fighting games with this crap though.

Just the d-pad. Everything else is actually really well built. But I just couldn't use it. Playing Bomberman was practically impossible, unless you hit the d-pad exactly on axis it would register a diagonal and send me off in the wrong direction. Tape over the contacts helped, but it still wasn't great and I never use it now.

I got this for £11 and I immediately bought a second. Mostly because apparently they break easily, but this is my go to retro controller now. Definitely not worth the £50 they were originally going for, though.

I just got mine in today!
Once I stopped being so brain dead and realized the xinput button names are different from the names on the buttons themselves I got everything mapped out exactly as it should.
Nothing quite compares to having the face buttons relatively where they should be, even if I can’t imagine it being super useful for much besides n64.
This version works as a switch n64 controller too as a bonus but I don’t have NSO+

So I picked up a Wingman XB2 on the iffy excuse that I am pretty short on and not especially fond of 360 controllers to use on an actual 360, and the good news is that daisy chaining the PS2>PS4 adapter worked, but the bad news is it's the same as running it through Steam in terms of rumble. Actually the PS2 adapter does a bit better than a DS3 or DS4 does but eh.

Kind of an oddity I found in the meantime is that at least in Polyphony Digital games PCSX2 outputs way heavier rumble if you're using an Xbox controller or the native DS4 support than a DS2 actually does on a PS2, I wonder if their implementation was tuned for a DS3 or something. Also I meant 136 not 138 jej. Just a deal of the default setting being 8 then splitting the 255 range and adding 128 to it, don't ask me why it's like that really I just noticed if I cranked it to 255 it seemed to circle back around to how it started and when I tried 128 it was still slightly off.

At this point I just wish someone would make a name brand DualShock form factor X-input clone like they do with SNES/Genesis/Saturn. I don't even care if the d-pad is kind of shit like most clones I just need a modern analog controller where the shoulder buttons are spaced out from the face inputs for fuck's sake.

2nd this. It's one of the only modern controllers out there with a decent d-pad.

I also have the SN30 pro (snes style 8bitdo controller) and it's pretty ass, so no one get that one.

And actually you know my end conclusion from this odyssey is that the vibration on all this shit is not really as inherently different as I thought but every fucking controller has different strength values (I mean I have 2 DS2s that vibrate noticeably different even, whether that's just because one is worn out) and every fucking piece of software on PC has different output values and in particular one of my test cases (Armored Core Project Phantasma in Duckstation because in Retroarch and Mednafen it has no rumble for some reason) those values are on the edge of where the light landing effect is strong enough to actually do anything on one controller and not the others. If I try an Xbox series controller and then a PS1 DualShock in GT2 in Retroarch or in MHW they're about as similar as two physically different controllers produced over two decades apart can be and not so far off of real hardware as Duckstation's default settings, if I crank the rumble strength up in DS4Windows on my DS4 it not only feels pretty similar there's actually something in MHW that it picks up the Xbox controller doesn't.

Also what confuses things even more is that even just how the controller is getting power over USB can affect how strong the rumble is. Basically as far as matching the developer's intent unless you're dealing with a brand new launch console with its packed in controller shit is wack man, and trying to subjectively match a real console in an emulator is the only kind of "right" anyone can hope for on PC, which doesn't do any good for anyone that doesn't have a real console to compare to.

Now putting aside the dozens up dozens of laps of Midfield Raceway in GT2 and Laguna Seca in Tourist Trophy I've done trying to understand this shit I should stop pissing around and play some fucking video games.

>USB arcade stick I got in 2000, still going strong
>9pin atari style stick I play through an adapter

I love that arcade stick but definitely need a 4way for some games like pacman and donkey kong.
