Been looking forward to experiencing the PC Engine for a while now, as it is really the last video game console I took interest in that I didn't own. Even now I don't know terribly too much about the console and its history.

First impressions are that there are quite a lot of space shooter type games. But as far as I know, that is the most popular and well received genre on the platform. I've been playing the City Hunter release on the console as well, and it's a pretty enjoyable experience. I guess because it is a side scrolling game set in the city where you shoot people and get shot at, it reminded me of the Dick Tracy game on NES at first. Incoherent rambling aside: are there any games on the platform you fellas would consider a must play? Also, is the CD-ROM attachment worth fucking with? I feel like I remember people saying even on emulators playing the disc based pc engine games is a pain to set up. But that might have been a long time ago. I think the CD games for the console are rare too, in terms of buying them today.

>there are quite a lot of space shooter type games
Well it is THE sci-fi/cyberpunk console.

Yeah the CD add-on came out very early, so there are many games on it.
Also CD is very easy to emulate now

Was there any reason in particular for that or was it just a coincidence?

Isn't the pc engine + games super expensive to collect now?

>>9528364
TurboGrafx console/games are expensive, not PCE.

I was going through building out a master playable romset for 'em via full-library demo videos and the like just this last month, and frankly I was super impressed by just how much of the TG16 looks totally deece. Like 60% action games; pic related, tons of TL patches too. Playing in order, doing Bonk right now; shooters do get sort of repetitive but they're individually not bad at all.

Only 20% done orging TGCD, but initial impressions are similarly positive; only issue's how much just never came overseas.

From my notes; I can confirm these run flawlessly on a fucking 3ds, so there's no reason you shouldn't be able to get them working. Only issue's with turbo CD game bin/cues not fucking running; I could only get them going by converting to .chd with the latest MAME build's tool and running them through Mednaten PCE in retorarch.

Head here for up-to-date prepatched TL, also: https://archive.org/details/En-ROMs

If you're into Bubble Bobble and arcade-style games, check out Parasol Stars. It's a neat little game, and AFAIK plays best on the PCE. Only reason I know of it is because my friend and his gf showed up at my house with a big bin full of games (they were the gf's brother's, who left them when he moved out), including a TG-16 and a couple of games for it, which none of us had ever played. My bud's gf fell absolutely in love with it (she got really good at it, too), and we took turns playing it until we beat it, then replayed it several times until we got the best ending.

I've only really played a few other games for it since then, but I've been meaning to explore it further. I like how a lot of its games look and feel like souped-up, highly colorful NES games, and once you factor the PCE-CD games, it's even better. Unlike the Sega CD, it appears to have had a nice amount of high quality titles worth playing.

Coincidence of the time. Stuff like Bubblegun Crisis and Megazone 23 was popular at the time, and influenced the near-future aesthetic a bunch of games tried around that time.

Personally I love Military Madness. It sets itself apart from the Nintendo Wars series by incorporating a mechanic where neighboring units strengthen allied units. There's good variety of unit types and some randomness in combat results prevents it from being too much of a puzzle game. It has a good amount of maps and a unlockable second, more difficult campaign. You can also play as the enemy forces with a cheat.

>are there any games on the platform you fellas would consider a must play?

yes. pce was 3rd fiddle but still has plenty of must play games, even if you don't like shooters. i'll try to keep the list tight and full of only bangers that hold up with snes/genesis games

hucard
>parasol stars
>bonk 2
>liquid kids
>soldier blade
>super star soldier
>air zonk (also check out coryoon)
>R-Type
>ninja spirit
>darius plus (genesis has a new homebrew port)
>dragon trap
>ninja gaiden (easier than nes version at least)
>super dodgeball
>salamander
>sonson II (cool capcom exclusive platformer)
>momotaro katsugeki (2nd best hudson platformer on the pce)
>gunhed
>new adventure island (best in the series)
>galaga 88
>download

CD
>fatal fury special
>nexzr
>spriggan
>forgotten worlds
>tenchi wo kurau (rare capcom beatemup)
>river city ransom
>rondo of blood
>legend of Xanadu
>legend of Xanadu II
>Ys IV
>anearth fantasy stories
>blood gear
>schubibinman 3
>cho aniki (20 bosses!!)
>ai cho aniki

>Also, is the CD-ROM attachment worth fucking with?

yeah, it's essential. most of the system's good RPG's and half the good shooters are on it

hucards also effectively died after 1992 (1993 had a handful of releases), so the super CD remained the dominant release platform till the system's death in 96

i forgot the thunder games but those are kinda a no brainer

also, splatterhouse if you never tried that one. super fun and less trial and error frustration than the genesis sequel

i don't give a fuck about devil's crush, and i think it's better on genesis because you can actually beat the damn game and it has improved graphics

bonk 2 really is special, like bonk 1 is awesome but bonk 2 is one of the few pce platformers that really holds its own against the snes platformers. lot of replayability with the scoring system and very strong high road low road level design

bonk 3 totally missed the mark and super bonk is bizarre. super bonk 2 was a huge improvement but no one played it cuz it's an import

Is the anon here who made the cool ass hucard cases from cassette tape cases lurking about here? I really want to try making some and wanted to know what kind of printing paper quality you used and/or the template you used for designing the covers.

>are there any games on the platform you fellas would consider a must play?
Ys series. That was the system seller which initially convinced me to get the Duo back then. Despite the newer PC editions having more content with improved visuals and content, the PCE versions still are worth playing for the outstanding music and younger looking goddesses.

>is the CD-ROM attachment worth fucking with?
Absolutely worth it since the CD-ROM games are where most of the best games are plus those are region free unlike HuCards/TurboChips. The overwhelming majority of the games I had on the system back then were the CD games. The only complication is the system card needed to play which there is only 3: standard, super, and arcade.
