my first time playing was the TG-16 port on the wii VC. second time was the PC port on steam with the original BGM or look, I forget what the options are. anyway don't worry about which port just start because there's a lot more to play beyond Ys Book I&II

i've only played the version on Steam and had no beef with it, but of course i had nothing to compare it to. it's nice being able to swap soundtrack on the fly

Any PC port that has 8-directional movement is prefered, but then it's gonna feel like a huge downgrade if you eventually play 4&5.

>> No.9527739

>>9527731
Well, Mask and 5 are going to feel shit no matter what he does, and Dawn of Ys had 8 directional movement

>> No.9527757

The the steam pot is pretty good, you can also play it on psp which is where i beat the first two games

Turbo cd.

8-directional movement breaks the game. It makes the already simple combat almost mindless. Instead of aiming for the sides of the enemy, you can just run into them diagonally.

It's not like Ys supposed to be difficult beyond the boss fights.
I don't mind pixel perfect precision since I started with the Master System port, but it can get tedious in some games.
To answer OP, play whatever you want except for the weird DS port. Steam version is the easiest way to go.

Why? I played on DS back in the day and had no problems

Just listen the soundtrack on youtube, it's literally the only good thing about Ys

Japasese computer ports are all similar except X68000 which is terrible. SMS is similar to Japanese computer ports as well.
Famicom is it's own thing.
PC Engine is an interesting port. PC Engine has sorta it's own series.
Saturn is an interesting port.
Eternal ans Chronicles are the latest ports. Eternal looks different. If you want to continue down the series play Chronicles as story is expanded.

Can't go wrong with either the Steam or TG16 version. I personally love the TG16 versions of 1 to 4.

I mean I didn't recommended it or anything.

All 16bit versions of third game is based on X68000 version (unlike first game's X68000 version it's quite good). So they are all pretty similar. I would recommend X68000 version or Genesis. Just listen to soundtrack of PC Engine and watch intro. PC Engine is choppy and SNES has hit detection issues. Also SNES looks pretty much the same as X68000 version. Genesis is an interesting version.

>> No.9529943

I played it with the original Ys I+II Complete Japanese Windows port that was fan-translated years and years ago, though it seems like you can't find it that easily anymore compared to how easily you can get the Chronicles version of it through Steam.
Aside from that the PC-Engine CD version is also very good.

it's OK they released an apology port to x68k last year

Thank you anon I didn't know about it. It seems port of like PC 88 port. They should release YS 2 for SMS.
>>9529830
btw MSX2 versions look a bit different. Also SMS version is based on MSX2.
It has redrawn artwork and things like that, so maybe it can be considered different from other other ports.
If I remember correctly PC-88, PC-98, X1, FM-7 all are pretty much ports.
I never understood why they made changes between Eternal and Chronicles. Sprites look very similar.
