DQ7 is probably the worst of the series, it's a slog, but the load times are fine.

4 remake is in Japanese only and afaik the DS version is pretty much identical. Personally I'd recommend playing the original first if you haven't

I played the nes version until the hero's chapter when I realized you can't commands your party member I instantly dropped it

You can use a gameshark code to control them, though you'll lose Taloon's special effects.

With that said I thought the AI and balance was great that way

No, I played IV NES with a full control code and had him tripping onto enemies the entire time. He even stole the Sphere of Silence for me.
