It looks silly, but this system was way better than Gamestop. Last new game I bought at Gamestop was Puyo Pop Fever for Gamecube. I took the shelf-worn display case with a price sticker on the front to the register, and the employee put a disc in it he got from the back room. I asked for a factory-sealed copy and the employee said they have none, as they open all the new games. Toys-R-Us' system ensured you got a pristine factory-sealed copy when buying new games.

They don't have to open ALL of them. If you wanted a display model, you could just open one and leave the case on the shelf. Let the employees take the disc home to become familiar with what they're selling... but leave all the other copies in the back factory-sealed for customers to buy. That solves all three problems without angering customers. But you're right, they must've done that to sell used games as new.

No more than the starters or the mains from the TV series and NO WHERE NEAR as much as Mew or Mewtwo. The magazine cover is immediately disingenuous.

Sometimes I forget how fucking retarded people were around the Millennium. It took me years to shake off referring to people as "townies" and in "flyover stataes." There's still a few, but thankfully nobody's getting trampled over Beanie Babies or getting 'disappeared' over TTRPGs anymore.

I'm not saying there WASN'T merch, I was saying the merch was MUCH more abundant for other characters.

My main point, however, was the Time article about the franchise being "manipulative" and featuring a Pokemon that has a big spiral on his chest. It'd be like asking, "Are Video Games Getting TOO SEXY for Children???" and putting a photo of nude DoA characters on the cover. It's inherently disingenuous.

It was inevitable even without gabe. Digital is the future. Physical is obsolete trash for weirdos. Don't blame the player, blame the game. I don't really like it either but there's really not that much sense in producing physical media these days when internet is as widespread and fast as it is.
Personally I'd be more mad about stupidly invasive drm, no local servers etc. in games these days.

Poliwhirl was a personal favorite so I liked this cover when I saw it.Is it bad for them? Well, no more so than any other media crap. One must wonder where the line is for a stupid brand obsession becomes unhealthy. You rarely see anyone describe sports obsession as unhealthy, yet it's just as likely to make adults act childish and nonsensical.

That definitely had to have been a regional thing or only certain years. I worked at GS for 3 years in late 2000s and we only ever had 1 "display copy" gutted and out at a time and we even would give a 10% discount on the display copy if it was the last copy available. Usually a customer would just bring the case up and you swapped it for a sealed copy. Employees were also allowed to rent out games, but i cant recall if that was only on preowned stuff.

The thing that irked me was prices on cover art spine. Like stickers stuck right on the artwork. Sometimes they put them on slips of paper and slid them in but most monkeys were too lazy to bother.

Even before I worked there, all of the stores around my small city (eastern Pennsylvania) only ever would take the display copy handed to them and pull a sealed copy out until only the display copy was left which we would do a small discount on (if customer asked) and used a sticker "seal" to act like the shrink-wrap and we informed customers once that seal was ripped, it was treated the same as ripping the wrap off. Obviously, we pushed preowned if we had a copy, but you are saying literally every "new" copy was sold open? Or they would sell the shelf copy then gut open another copy? Of course it's all just consumerism and it's all been about finding the most efficient way to sell product, but it's disappointing to see how not just the advertising but everything has become so cold, sterile, and dystopian. Like they know they have us by the balls and don't need to put any effort into selling the dumbass masses products anymore because they'll buy it anyways. Not saying we should get up in Arms and cry our eyes out over the loss of old McDonald's building designs, but you have to admit the designs of old had more character than the neutral colored, inoffensive commie-blocks we have now.

I think they did that so the building could be repurposed into any other fast food restaurant. Increases the resale value. It'd be hard for people to see a traditional McDonald's building as anything else.

And that's just it. It's why everything is the way it is now. From cars, to homes, to restaurants, all being bland innofenssive garbage with their grays, whites and blacks is just so that it doesn't hurt the prospect of them making slightly more money in the future. I will never be convinced that it was a completely natural occurrence. It happened very quickly and with too many extraneous circumstances.
And success has little to do with it. Unless I was certifiably rich, so rich that money had no meaning at all anymore, I wouldn't pay these prices for video games that can be played for free. The days of sensible prices are still too fresh in my mind. I am not yet broken. Imagine paying more than original retail price for a used game that sold hundreds of thousands of copies.

Prices were already getting funny, and then Covid hit, and you had all these 25-40 year olds out of work but still collecting money. Then prices skyrocketed. Don’t think it’s natural at all that happened overnight it’s just a side effect from the steps taken on how Covid was dealt with. Combine that w everyone and anyone in my age range having a gaming room w official retro gear and YouTubers pushing and promoting all kinds of former garbage tier games making even those hard to come by… yea it wasn’t natural at all.

I think a lot of this is nostalgic because it was shared culture. We all played the same games, read the same magazines, watched the same TV shows and movies, dressed in the same clothes, had the same references and probably even ate similar things. After the internet and the explosion of media, but even more so after the democratization of the smartphone, things were never really the same again.

Playing the game for the first time before there were guides and everything was solved was a magical experience. I imagine the same goes for a lot of MMORPGs of that time. The human interactions were more genuine, you had to barter and trade for the items you wanted instead of just using a global marketplace menu, it really felt like you were on an adventure and part of something bigger. You banded together with other random newbies to explore the world and get stronger, eventually guilds and friendships were formed and some people even married IRL.

yeah man, RO was something special. i started playing during beta of 2002 (before there were even 2-1 classes), and there's never been anything else like it. i still remember when you could do crazy shit like warp monsters or use DBs in town. everything was so rudimentary and dependant on player interaction like you said; there wasn't even a world map for the longest time. it felt like you were just plopped into this strange land and had to figure everything out on your own, and it was the best feeling. want to sell your shit for top dollar? you've got to make a merchant, pick a spot in the world, come up with a catchy shop name and start your own store -- and if you kept up with it, you could forge your own little niche, like being "the guy who sells potions outside the dungeon" or "the guy who sells elemental claymores in west pront". the game had a humbleness but also let you create own identity and legend. that's to say nothing of what is probably the best OST in any game ever made and timeless graphics. RO was amazing. i still go back every few years to whatever server pops up; it's definitely a shell of its former self, but even now, i still catch that little fleeting feeling of warmth that it gave me as a kid. truly one of the greats.

I've never played in a sit down Japanese style cabinet like that. I've always wondered how the screen angle works. A tilted monitor makes sense to me if someone's standing up because they're going to be looking down at the screen a little. But if you're sitting down you're looking at it at a much more horizontal angle and I would think that having the screen tilted like that would be annoying. Or maybe I'm just wrong and the angle is basically the same either way.

The Flash defunct was hands down the most obnoxious thing that happened. I'm sure they have a good reason but man did it tank so many good games. If we're gonna talk nostalgia, Neopets is a good example. I popped in there out of curiosity a month or so back and the games on that site outright went defunct when the Flash switchover happened. Now they only have like....maybe eight or nine games.

Here's a goodie from the early games on that site.

That pic was taken in the very early 00's at Comp USA. I got my first PC at the end of 99 for Christmas and spent endless hours in that store. PC building was big even back then. I remember buying PC magazines for updating stuff. The tech was improving at lightning speeds too. While pre built PCs were by far the most mainstream way to get into PC gaming, but people still did build or upgrade their PCs.

Here's a tip for those who want an easier way to see old websites:

1) Grab an old browser from here: http://www.oldversion.com/
(It will be a dedicated old browser so you don't have to change settings in your modern ones. I use Netscape from 2001 but any will do.)

2) Set the proxy as shown here: https://theoldnet.com/docs/httpproxy/index.html
(Port range is from 1996 - 2012, depending on what year you want.)

3) Now when you open the browser and type an address, it will load directly from the waybackmachine.

Now you have a dedicated browser frozen in time for all your nostalgia needs. Thanks for reading my blog.

It depends on the browser. When I used wayback machine on modern firefox or chrome, many times pictures and scripts are broken. But when using an era appropriate browser though the proxy, they load fine. There are still broken websites around, but many of those don't work because of some incompatibility with modern browsers.

Just turned 34 dude. I feel it deep in my soul. For lack of a better way to describe it, I remember the way those places smelled like endless possibility. Every generation completely changed the way games looked, felt, and played. It was like a constant stream of new adventures into ideas that had never been explored before. The excitement of a new controller, the fun of having friends spend the night for split-screen on some new game... I remember how it felt to get the newest console or some obscure SNES game on Christmas after my dad spent weeks trying to track down something on my list of hard-to-find games. It had a spark.

Now, I'm an adult, my parents are gone, and that spark had been gone for a long time. All I play anymore are retros and indies. This Christmas I literally got nothing because I didn't have a single thing I wanted that I didn't already have.

People can call vaporwave music a meme too, but when I listen to some of that coming from a video of a shopping mall with Dreamcast era graphics overlayed, it makes me feel things.
