What was the last retro game that really impressed you, that you played for the first time, so there was no nostalgia whatsoever?

In recentish memory, Granada, Phantasy Star 1 and 4 and Metal Warriors all stand out as games I somehow missed when they were current and then really impressed me.

I don't remember but recently I was surprised by how fucking good some gen 6 games look. I always took it for granted but man, look at REmake, RE4, Metroid Prime, Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy X, like holy shit. You look at those and wonder how did they even get them to work on such hardware

Indeed many games from PS2 and GameCube still look amazing. I would add MGS2 and 3 to that list, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory was also very impressive.

About a year ago I played Final Fantasy Adventure and absolutely adored it. I had played Secret of Mana and Sword of Mana before and found both to be subpar, and shit respectively. FFA impressed me not only by being a fantastic gameboy game, but for making me see the potential in the Mana series

Zelda II, which was very good. It probably helped that it's consistently shat upon almost universally (not on this site though, plenty of people here recognize it's strengths). I went in with low expectations, and l think that allowed me to be pleasantly surprised.
I actually played it right after Dark Souls, which I disliked, and found that Zelda II seemed to have a lot of similar design elements, but actually landed their implementation in ways that were satisfying to me. I was very lucky that I just happened to play them back-to-back and could compare them so easily. Fittingly, I went into Dark Souls with high expectations because everywhere online and all my friends lauded it constantly.

I hope people never stop discovering Doom and SMAC. Definitely two of the masterpieces of the entire medium of gaming. Hard to give recommendations to people though, I can't even convince my friends that like Civilization to try SMAC. Oh well, horses to water.

I'm going with Legend's "Mission Critical" here, which I played in 2015ish.
I heard it was one of those well-reviewed-but-nobody-played games from the 1990s before the 32bit era; it needed DosBox on my laptop.
I was not disappointed. Great story, excellent puzzles. Also a cameo from peak Michael Dorn in the captain's chair where he belongs.
There was one bit where DosBox couldn't quite keep pace with the animation but it wasn't necessary to the plot, and it was just that one bit.

>Try out Robot Alchemic Drive because robot on the cover
>Every button controls a limb on the mech, triggers are legs, sticks are fists
>You have to get into a bit of a flow to get the mech moving properly and fast
>Pressing the sticks in a certain way and trigger moves like a rocket punch
>Can unlock more stuff like a DOUBLE ROCKET PUNCH and even a booster to move fast
>Literally every building on the map can be destroyed
>But youre supposed to prevent things from being destroyed so you get more money for upgrades
>Utterly horrendous voice work, like they paid their relatives to do it, but its so bad its funny
It went from some obscure game I knew fuck all about to probably one of my favorite games of all time.

ocarina of time unironically. Such a wonderful game. I'm 30 and played it for the 1st time 3 months ago. I did use the pc port and played it at 144fps though. I know many will express disgust at this but I still found it a beautiful looking game.

Oh right maybe Alpha Centauri is the one I should have put (I posted something different already). I tried it as an adult and didn't like it, and then I tried it again as an older adult with the intention of giving it a more serious chance and finally ended up liking it. Yeah it's good. The only major flaw I saw is the AI, which struck me as being awful - I think I even ended up winning on the highest difficulty level (and no I wasn't including expansion factions that game) on just my third or fourth serious attempt at playing the game at all, which is crazy. I've never even been good at playing in high difficulty modes in Civilization games. So I guess for me the replay value isn't super high. But whatever, it was good enough for many hours of play, and there's also multiplayer mode of course.

Everything on SEGA CD honestly. This is a wonderful little machine, capable of both great audio and visuals on a 16-bit console. TurboGrafx CD is also very impressive for what they could pull off on what was essentially an 8-bit console, especially games like Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire. Then there's a bunch of PS1 games I never played until recently like Einhander and Omega Boost.

Blazing dragons for the ps1. I played a shitload of point and clicks in my day. Favorite genre. Missed this one because that genre played on a game pad just seemed like a weird choice. I emulated it a few years ago and can safely say that if I played it back when I played all the others, it would have been right up there with the Lucas/Sierra greats.

Yeah, the AI is notably weaker than the rest of the game's elements. You'll be happy to know that there is not one, but several, community patches that vastly increase the AI's capabilities and, optionally, rebalance certain technologies or abilities to avoid having players race for the OP tech/projects.

Quake. I wanted it when it first came out, but my best friend convinced me it looked ugly, so I didn't play it until half a year ago. The speed of the movement and being tossed right into actual gameplay made for a really addictive game that I played right through. I honestly thought it was going to be a slog like the Half-Life games. Had no idea there was a game this good.

Been playing a lot of punch out lately, got the arcade versions too now, and super Metroid. Really enjoy punch out since it's kinda like a thinking man's twitch reflex game. Super Metroid is fun since I finally got that wall jump shit right. But I guess this year I was just floored going through ys again.
