950060 No.950060 [Reply] [Original]

My friend who is a Gamestop employee told me that they are going to open their own retro vidya stores and that they have massive warehouses full of old consoles and games that they have amassed over the years.

Will this be good or bad for /vr/ collectors?

>> No.950075

Gonna need some kind of legit sauce.

Overall it would be kinda bad, it would kill local stores like that especially if they have decent prices. However it would probably make it easier for us to get common stuff and people to begin collecting. Not for people who are hunting for those hard to find games.

Anything that people think is rare or valuable (like RPGs) are probably going to be priced about what they are now.

This rumor has been going for years now. Did your friend give you a date for the announcement?

I'd say bad. They already mark up their used games. Giving them a retro age will be incentive enough for them to mark them up even more.

Look on the bright side. GS could come out with their own classic game magazine and subscribers would get a discount on classic games. Plus they'd probably have a buy 2 get one free sale. Not only that, but they might also allow you trade in all your crappy new games for classic games. What's not to like about that?

The local game store gives me decent trade-in on my stuff and has reasonable prices. GS would not do either of those for me.

This will spell the end of the retro craze. Gamestop getting in on it will cause the bubble to pop and people to say fuck it wholesale.

But the small shops don't have much of a selection compared to what GS would have. GS has hundreds of stores that would rake in all the old games from around the country, and with such an influx of older games suddenly being available that weren't before, prices would surely drop.

>> No.950241

I can only hope it would do that. Local game stores would die, but eBay prices would go back to non-rape levels.

Just imagine how much more would be available to you thanks to GS's advertising dollars. GS could advertise a trade in old games for the new GTA game and suddenly everyone and their mother would be wanting to trade in their old games. Even mother would know about the sale, and she knows about your huge NES collection that's just collecting dust in the attic.

I worked at GameStop in 2006. Right when they bought out E.B. Games.. I remember at this point they were shipping off most of the PS2 / GameCube / Xbox games to make room for the new gen. Come to find out, they basically destroyed a lot of them. Hell, even now.. they would throw away the boxes / cases to make room since they didn't sell that often.

That was the worst job I ever had. 3 and a half weeks and I couldn't take anymore.

Btw, I read a article or two about what you're posting about. I really don't think it's going to happen. Its hard for game stores to sell games at ebay prices. it just doesn't sell well with ' normal ' people...

>> No.950335

I know a ton of people hate gamestop but whether you like it or not they are a good middle man in preventing the industry from screwing over customers really hard. DRM is only growing more and more intrusive and publishers really want gamestop out of business since they get nothing out of used game sales. Not that they even should get anything to begin with.

I see some benifits to gamestop retro stores. What if they are actually very successful even with these retro stores and force the industry to stop jewing people with all these stupid passes and over priced modern games? Maybe if it catches on enough and people start buying more and more older games that are more common and priced fairly a ton of the bs we now have to deal with will stop.

I don't know I can just see more positives then negatives with this. Besides things have gotten horrible lately and I wouldn't mind going back now, especially if prices on some of these older games become reasonable and maybe some companies decide many people are just sick of their ways.

I think 3d is good for simulators, but not video games. Banjo Kazooie is a good easter egg hunting simulator, and Ghost Recon is a good soldier simulator. My feeling is that most gamers who are into retro gaming and collection also are the type of gamers who HATE Gamestop and understand that Gamestop is bad for gamers. this is going to be very bad for the community as a whole.

The entire retro gaming scene will get more casualized. People with no knowledge of game history will come start coming hear and saying a whole bunch of bullshit (I've talked to a 'retro-gamer kid' who beleived fall-out 1&2 are the foundation for crpg).

You will get more people flooding the board complaining about difficulty (why can't I change direction in mid-air? do they expect me to actually plan my jumps?)

Obscure games will be talked about less and less as all the new kids will make countless threads about final fantasy, mega man, and nintendo
