For me, it's Doom II.
I will never forget playing version 1.666 during the 1994 holiday season. All these huge dark and scary levels full of traps and secrets. I didn't have any guides and didn't know any cheat codes. All my friends were occupied with SNES Mortal Kombat 2 and basically none of them had a PC so I couldn't ask anyone for an advice. My dad watched and encouraged me playing sometimes but he wasn't into gaming himself unless it's was a racing sim.
I was living in Doom II. I had dreams about Doom II. I was obsessed. Also, chasm is great

You probably have quite a few opinions about that game, but it's important to remember one thing: you're wrong. Here's why. To start, you're completely missing the point and everything you think is actually at odds with reality when you look at the actual game. In fact, you're nowhere close to being accurate. It's simple to understand when you stop for a second and actually look at the issues. Once you open your eyes, you'll see that you're wrong about each and every one of them, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. "But what about my notalgia?" No, if the past is any indication of the future, not only is there no chance that you'll ever be right, all signs suggest you will never even come close once in your lifetime. The only way you'll ever be right is to not recommend Doom II to every single person you know. Until then, you're wrong.

doom2 was the greatest cash grab in gaming history. they added what, one new weapon that was just a new shotgun skin with one parameter changed, and 2 new enemies plus the lame final boss that was just a wall texture? has there ever been a more legendary game with such a 0 effort sequel?

Iirc mancubus, arachnotron, archvile, pain elemental, hell knight, chaingunner, revenant were added by Doom 2.

The Chasm might be the worst level in the whole game. Fuck you Sandy and your tight rope bullshit

A lot of people dislike the urban levels in Doom 2, but I liked them. The super shotgun is cool. Doom 2 is the best Doom. Doom 2 is Doom.

Technically it was, because it was a retail version of Doom, as opposed to mail-order first Doom game. But you really had to be there to appreciate it. Like it's 1994, Doom is the coolest game around, maybe outside of Daytona in the arcades, and you are getting a bigger and better version of the same.

As a kid I remember I stopped playing at The Factory/map 12 because even back then I despised the level design. It never felt quite as natural as the first game. It feels too chaotic and mish-mashy.

My dad then showed me the IDCLEV cheat and I would just warp between levels to check them out but would always just revisit Doom. Then he found some silly WAD that changed all the monsters into fish/sea creatures and I was so mad at him for that and my version of Doom stayed like that for years.

I always found OG Doom maps too linear and boring after being exposed to Doom 2. It's like id tried to do realistic looking locations in Doom to showcase their engine but with Doom II they went all out with crazy shit that wasn't possible in videogames before.
