is it too late to collect Retro disc based games? PS1, GameCube, PS2, Wii, PS3
it seems around 80% of the games I buy are beat to shit and need to be returned despite the sellers claiming they are "like new" and "scratch free"
I'm about ready to throw in the towel. Someone suggested buying my games in person instead of on ebay, which would solve the problem of verifying condition before purchase, but where would I even start? where does everyone else buy their shit if not on eBay/Amazon? tired of dealing with these deadbeat sellers and all these fucking returns

collect JP ps1 games on buyee/yahoo auctions. not only is it cheap (good games can usually be found for <$20), but the shipping is cheap, and the JP cover art is superior to NTSC and PAL 9 times out of 10

wouldn't that mean I'd have a bunch of games in Japanese?

How are you getting cheap shipping from japland? I agree, this is the right answer, but you are wasting money if you are buying one game at a time and paying 20usd usually at minimum plus proxy service fees for stuff like yahoo auctions.

Your options are:
-learn jap
-ignore jap and use a guide/screw dialogue
-pay out the dick for western copies in probably shit shape
-emulate
-digital disc drive/mod your hardware

Dont buy from regions near the equator or filth people. Damage to the data layer is caused by clumsy retards and far, FAR more prevalent then the rot which is based on storing your stuff in a swamp. Infact, i guarantee the vast number of numbnuts claiming it are doing a misdiagnosis of top layer damage which is remedied by not using your discs as a coaster or Frisbee. By all likelihood, you will have hung yourself long before all discs globally melt into a puddle, besides a few cases of known production error.

Unless you are into laserdisc, then you are probably fucked.

You want the AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCE? Own a few used games and buy a pile of cdrs and sharpies for the rest if them.

NO ONE. i repeat you zoomer faggot.... NO ONE had a huge original collection unless they were some nightmare fuel outcast autist with little dribblets of pee on their sweatpants in grade 12.

the issue is finding anything in relatively acceptable condition (not beat to shit, has manuals/inserts, art in good condition) without having to play magical hats with sellers

Sony and Microsoft stuff still goes cheap but they still have their fair share of pricey games, especially PS2

I find a lot of them at the thrift shop for cheap, including good ones like Pac-Man World, Gekioh Shooting King, Gran Turismo series, and Tekken. GameCube I don't see as often but thankfully it's easy to emulate this day and age. Pretty much unless it's SEGA CD, Turbo CD, Saturn, or specifically rare games like Einhander or Omega Boost, you can find them pretty easily at a decent price.

PS1 has a lot of shmups, fighters, platformers, and driving games that you don’t need to know Japanese to play

Most of my JP PS1 collection also had NTSC releases, but I bought them 5x cheaper most of the time

>> No.9488415

Genuinely, what is the appeal of buying games? They are a waste of space and money. No one cares if you download an old game. In fact, you are getting a superior experience.

Collecting is fun if you’re patient. Spend 20-60 a month, just get one or two games each month. Gives ya something to look forward to

In the Netherlands/Europe I really don't have this problem. Plenty of legit stores that still sell retro games in decent condition and even when bought from a virtual marketplace it's easy to pick out decent ones.

This is how any sane person would operate with most media hobbies. This is how buying modern games should work, too.
But now there's this faggy air of FOMO hanging over retro gaming.

Damn just got a spanking brand new looking Jak and Daxter 1 for ps2. Only thing missing was the manual..... Try goodwill bro, whoever is running that org is making fat money but if it isn't a current absolutely insane money game, goodwill has got your back. Shadow of Colossus is like 7 on most goodwill auctions and their ebay site.

Some of us are old and have a hard time getting used to the new paradigm. You might not think that's a big deal if you're young. Or if you've already moved on. It's like how you may have a relative that refuses to eat a meal without a giant slab of meat on the plate. They act like homemade pasta sauce is a poverty meal. Or like any kind of vegetable other than peas and carrots is an exotic fruit you plucked out of a kiwi's ass.

For me it depends almost entirely on the price. I may not play them right away but there's no way I'm walking away from Gekioh Shooting King for two bucks, even if it's missing the manual. Same for common games I didn't previously own though, like Pac-Man World. No interest in most sports games or other shovelware, but if it's a title or developer I know about or just looks like a fun time, I'll buy it if it catches my eye at the thrift.

Thrift shops, Goodwill, estate sales, and on occasion garage sales. This actually reminds me I almost got an Xbox 360 for like forty bucks a few months ago. I would actually recommend avoiding eBay since they're known to jack up the price as high as they can these days. Retro game shops used to be good too but then they just started checking prices online and going by that.

price isn't really an issue for me and it's my fault I have to pay these prices since it was my decision to sell my collection years ago, oh well
I might start perusing my local retro store if eBay continues to be complete dogshit. It's really hit or miss but sometimes I still manage to find a pristine game with the case/manuals every now and then

>> No.9489701

PS1 and PS2 games are cheap. Forget about SEGA CD, Turbographix CD, Saturn, and Gamecube games unless you want to put down some money. You can find plenty of great PS1/2 games for 15 bucks or less, as long as you stay away from survival horror and jrpgs.

>> No.9490173

Yes it is. PS3, not so much, but looking at stuff like NA Folklore, it's exclusives will go up in price eventually, if not already.
With that said, you may as well get the console and mod it to take an ODE for the PS1 or, in the other ones, softmod and throw modern storage at it.
If you don't care for accuracy, emulate and save yourself some money for drives to fill up.

ebay is such an enemy of the buyers market. People continuously will hold on prices at the top of the market. They'll claim "it goes for this much" when its really not the only market. It has become the last ditch desperate I'll pay extra for it place. Everything is inflated right now and lots of places are aware of that and lowering their prices. I'm curious about the retro game shops you've seen that are price gouging too, cause I don't see how they can stay in business if they're not moving product. I see people at cons over charging, but those are hobbyists and often autistic nerd retards who don't want to dare let something go for "less than it's worth"

The unfortunate thing about collecting vintage is the amount of effort it takes, you have to shop around. Video games are becoming like comic books. Difference being, most comics are collecting purely for the collection and not the function of the book. People still want games that function. Try to buy low and keep an eye out for replacement and sell the worse one, keep the one in better shape. Collecting sucks right now. It is NOT a sellers market, don't let them fool you. The supply is high, the demand is low, it's artificial scarcity. Highly recommend going digital.

Don't forget pawn shops too. You'd be amazed how many cheap games and movies you can find in those. Probably not the beast place for older stuff but there's one near me where I've been able to find Xbox 360 and PS3 games for 3 bucks each for several years now. 7th generation consoles are by far the cheapest thing to collect for right now and it's easy to find most stuff for very little money
