I already use OPL. I’ve gotten lucky with compatibility issues so far, but I get some unpleasant clicking and popping sounds in the music in Ridge Racer V when playing it from my PS2’s hard drive. That’s why I’m gonna grab an actual copy of the game. It’s apparently still extremely cheap.

Playing "collect as many PS2's for spare parts as feasible"

Enjoying the games? Sure, as long as they aren't too expensive and disc only copies that are dirt cheap to resurface.

My next move is to get an Kaico OSSC (I tried the retrotink 2x and just wasn't too happy with it and the other scalers are just too damn expensive).

OPL is a little complex for my retard normie brain, but if I can build computers than I can figure out how to play ps2 iso's via the ethernet port from my PC. Just have to read a guide I'm sure.

You just let the OPL desktop software a folder on your computer (mine's on a laptop) and set it up to be sharable. Pic related, there's only three folders you care about and the full art asset set can be downloaded pre-formatted at under 200mb

From my cheat sheet:

How'd you get a 4gb+ title onto a fat32 usb stick in the first place?? MGS2 Substance is ~4.30GB, and I can tell you right now in my experience the only way to get those over and booting via USB is to split the ISO.

Search up 'USBUTIL v2.2 rev1.0 ', though again I'm not sure how you got the file over onto your USB in the first place. The 4GB file limit is a hard cap for the file system, same way you can't have more than 4gb ram on a 32bit OS.

I am but I hate all the compatibility issues. Disabling in game reset and setting game load speeds to lowest seems to fix most games but there is still bullshit like having to use specific versions of OPL for Ace Combat 5 to not freeze. I use a 1TB HD loaded with all the games I want to play. Using an official PS2 network adapter converted from IDE to SATA. Was able to play Star Wars Battlefront online with it and there were a few people playing which was kind of cool.

The horror stuff like Kuon, Fatal Frame or Silent Hill are the absurdly priced ones due to limited production runs most likely. I finally snagged Fatal Frame II for 80 dollars.. but it was really the only one I wanted from the series.

Ps2 games are still relatively cheap, I would get some of the better ones sooner than later, but their are a lot of copies out there so don't feel like they'll all magically get snapped up.

The whole 480p bob deinterlacing thing is kind of annoying, but I honestly just cannot justify spending 300 dollars on that 5X. Its just too steep. I mean I burned through quite a bit just to track down a few games, a few slims for backup parts, etc.. Its a scaler for one console, I can totally understand if you need it for other older consoles i.e Snes, Genesis, Saturn, N64, or PS1, but I typically emulate those.

I know the 5X is pretty much the king of scalers right now, but I still just want less input lag most of the time. That and I just realized ICO won't fucking work until I hook up the OSSC next week.

OPL is short for Open PS2 Loader. It's software you run on your PS2 that lets you boot games from an internal hard drive, a USB drive or via your network using SMB.
It's pretty sweet, honestly. You can buy a memory card online for maybe $15 tops that's preloaded everything you need to run it on your PS2. You just plug the memory card into either slot before the console boots and you're good to go.
Setting up OPL itself is another matter entirely, but it's really well documented.

It won't pick up 480i? The problem with some of the early PS2 games on blue disks (CD not DVD or dual-layer) is that a handful were in 240p. I can hear ICO through my optical out connection, I just can't see it because most every LCD will not know what 240p resolutions are. I can't imagine even a decade old LCD set not picking up 480i, but its possible. Just finished Katamari Damacy.
>Are you enjoying it?
I had only ever played it once, and that was the day I bought it back in like 2006. I went to the mall with some friends, bought the funny Japanese game, and then slept over and was up the whole night. I beat it in one sitting, I was so engrossed.
Honestly, I liked it even more this time. I appreciated the finer details and happened to find a lot more secret stuff. It was a total of five hours or so, and I think four of that was just this last sitting.
So... yes.
>What's your next move?
I'm not sure. I kind of want to do Dark Cloud again, but I've been in the mood to knock out shorter games, so I'm afraid I'll get a few hours into it and then become disinterested.
Before Katamari, I had tried playing Herdy Gerdy, but the load times were awful and the performance was painfully bad in some spots. Maybe I should emulate it instead.

I'm pricing out doing OPL with an internal HDD. If anyone wouldn't mind helping me with a few questions:
Is there any difference between the IDE to SATA converters? Obviously it's all chinkshit, but is it all pretty much the same?
I think I saw that you could use a 3.5 or a 2.5 drive, but I assume a 2.5 would be better for the space. I just don't know what all of this looks like once its in the guts of the machine.
And for HDDs, is there an upper limit on specs that the PS2 even benefits from? I don't want to waste money on speeds that won't even be used. I assume 1TB would be plenty, since I won't go full doomsday and download literally every game, but have a pretty respectable stockpile of anything I could want to play.

I've been doing some searching regarding these answers, and there's tons of documentation, but the best sources seem to not directly answer these, and I'm running into either junk or even randomly deleted posts. Any help is appreciated.

>Is there any difference between the IDE to SATA converters? Obviously it's all chinkshit, but is it all pretty much the same?
I noticed there's some that don't have the master/slave switch. This is a thing I became aware while homebrewing my Xbox. I don't know if that would cause any problems. Due to the low price the only option is just to try them out.

>I think I saw that you could use a 3.5 or a 2.5 drive, but I assume a 2.5 would be better for the space. I just don't know what all of this looks like once its in the guts of the machine.
I use SATA drives (2.5 ones). This is how it looks. It kind of dangles from the network adapter. As long as you're not moving the PS2 around there is no danger of it falling off. Somebody sold 3D printer "holders" to make it more sturdy, but I haven't had any problems in a year of using this setup.

>And for HDDs, is there an upper limit on specs that the PS2 even benefits from?
I think the limit is 2 TB but that's really overkill. The main issue is that any HDD you obtain has to be detectable by the PS2 for formatting. It may well be that the expensive HDD you buy simply won't be detected and there is nothing you can do. My suggestion is to salvage some SATA HDDs from old laptops or second-hand stores. I got two 500 GB and one 320 GB drives this way and only cost me $30 from a guy on facebook marketplace. All of them worked, luckily.

The PS2 won't benefit from higher speeds since most games have tied logic to the PS2 reading speed, so its capped.

The current program used for feeding games to the drive is called HDL-Batch. It has been updated this year and I literally used it yesterday. Now it has an user interface and can tell you if the ISO is corrupt or if its already in the drive etc. You format the drive in the PS2, get it out and connect it to the PC with an USB to SATA cable (very cheap), the program dectects the drive and you just select the games you want to install.

Would a 3.5" drive still dangle, or sit more flush? Either way, I suppose I could shim it with something. There aren't any moving parts in that cavity. The PS2 may occasionally be moved, especially if I finally get around to organizing this area more.

>Would a 3.5" drive still dangle, or sit more flush?
The 3.5 IDE drive will just fill the space so there would be no dangling. The space was made for those in mind.
I opted for the 2.5 SATA drives due to the issues of:
- needing the SATA to IDE adapter OR the original PS2 network adapter.
- needing to get an IDE to USB for the PC (the IDE needs it's own power so it will turn on in the Xbox/PS2 but not when you connect it to the PC with the SATA to IDE adapter).
- the internet scared me with stories of IDE drives dying out of the blue.
- the current abundance of SATA drives being thrown for pennies by people who don't know better and me being unable to find an IDE drive that wasn't being sold full-price/new.

>Oh, you don't just do all that through Explorer file management? I guess I didn't notice that when reading this stuff.
Windows will just not even acknowledge you added connected a drive if it's formatted for PS2. Yes. It's confusing.

I think I am going to finally finish TimeSplitters Future Perfect. After that I think I am going to start Haunting Ground

Do you think PS2 game and consoles are going to continue to have price creep? A few weeks ago I picked up a fat PS2 (25 dollars) and a slim PS2 (35 dollars) from a thrift store I frequent. I was thinking about getting more for my PS2 collection, before prices somehow explode even more. The majority of the games I want, I already own since i have been collecting / playing since around 2003. I am just afraid I am going to be priced out like other consoles

>Do you think PS2 game and consoles are going to continue to have price creep?
Probably to some degree, but I don't think it'll be as bad as anything Nintendo.
The most desirable PS1 games are JRPGs which always trend to be expensive, and that along with the extra age is the main driver for those prices, I think. Nintendo obviously has its whole culture that keeps its prices ridiculous. PS2 games that aren't notable JRPGs or horror games will probably keep pretty steady unless something new drives interest, like a series revival.

I think you are right, but seeing games like Fatal Frame, Haunting Ground, Silent Hill, .hack//, ect skyrocket to astronomical prices has really scared me. I’m not sure what I would do if I didn't already own those games. Just about anything unique, weird, or horror related has spiked dramatically. At first I thought it was the pandemic causing all of this, but even after that the prices continue to explode. I imagine a lot of people are priced out in that regard. The Fatal Frame games were sitting at 20 – 30 dollars for years, now they’re sitting at around 100 dollars

Also, how active is the PS2 online community? I would love to play some games online with a PS2, but the communities seem really small and drama ridden.

Fatal Frame wasn't. Like I said in my post, they were always around in the 20 - 30 dollar range. A lot of games fall into this category I think. Check price charting for yourself (though, I don't think the site is 100% accurate all the time). I picked up Resident Evil Dead Aim for 9 dollars in 2013 at a local mom and pop shop, now it's 50. Don't get me wrong, I do think there are still great PS2 games that can be bought for cheap, but anything desirable is going to be in the 20 - 50 dollar range

>> No.9485484

>>9485430
Obviously the hard drive goes in the PS2.
OPL has an option to format it for PS2 use, regardless what was in it before.
It just needs to recognize it (there's a website for compatibilities but its incomplete and given the unlikeness of finding the exact drive it's better to get it for cheap).

Once formatted you can add games to it. The fastest is to take the drive out and connect via USB to the PC.
Windows won't recognize the drive, but if you use HDL batch it will appear there. There you just select the ISOs and BIN/CUEs you want to add and it loads them up.
There are other ways to add stuff like network or USB but that's slow as fuck.

It couldn't hurt to grab a game or two that you're interested in since there's still some good stuff that can be had for cheap out there, but if I were you I would throw CFW on your new PS2 and get some way to play ISOs going. You'd definitely get the most games for your money that way, and 99% of stuff works exactly the same as it would from a real CD or DVD with a little bit of setup.
If you read this thread there have been several posts with good resources about where to get started. Basically, you'll need a memory card with Free MCBoot preinstalled (you can get these on eBay or Amazon) and you'll need to install OPL Manager on your PC to manage your games. If you have a fat PS2, you should spend a little more money and get a hard drive set up for it. If you have a slim you should stick to playing games over ethernet. You can play games over USB on ether model, but it's not as good as the other methods.

I have been for years. I probably should get a newer version.

I see alot of people say you have to buy a memory card with FMCB off ebay to use OPL and stuff. You can do it yourself too. I don't remember the specifics. There was a yt vid though. I put OPL on my ps2 with just a PC and flash drive. FMCB just has to be on a magic gate 8MB card. I don't even use that card to play but a couple games and all the softmod stuff works.
Actually, when I use that card, OPL is on a newer ver for some reason and I get stuck in the menu and can't access the games list. A good reason to just update my OPL maybe.

I think it's a matter of people wanting a hassle free solution, like the original xbox or wii. I have around 950 PS2 games on my 2TB HDD and just a couple of games didn't work, which was solved by using an older version of OPL.

OPL has some plugins enabled by default and even though they can be useful, it breaks a good % of games. One unlocks the read speed of the HDD so games load as fast as possible and the other is called IGR (In-Game Reset), which enables you to reset the console with a combination of buttons. For games that don't boot, you have to turn off one of these plugins. Problem is, many people don't know you can have game-specific configs, so they see a game that doesn't work and call it quits.

When you launch an online game for the first time, many of them have a network setup software. In here, you can setup up your DNS. The good thing is that you can create multiple profiles, so you can have 3 or 4 network profiles with different DNS. These profiles are saved to the memory card and are compatible between games, so you don't have to setup a new network profile for each game.

PS2 games (or anything SD for that matter) really doesn't look that great on modern HD / 4K TV's. It can really be a night and day difference when displayed on a CRT, compared to a modern TV setup. I think emulation on a PC might help, since it can upscale everything. It also really matters what cables you are using on a modern display. I tried playing my GameCube (Resident Evil remake) on a HDTV with S-Video output and it was almost unplayable. I would suggest using a CRT but I also understand a lot of people don't have the time or room for a setup like that.

So some time ago I killed my PS2 fat (Which also was kind of a memento from my late dad) trying to see which modchip it had. Some time later I bought another PS2 fat (a 39001) at a flea market, but the HDD port died when I changed the hard drive. Some days ago I wanted to check it out to sell it (its optical drive still worked) and didn't output video.
Long story short, I was kinda considering getting another PS2 fat at the flea market, but I also have a slim which I kinda neglected because I had my fat ps2 with a hard drive, for the lulz I configured OPL with ethernet and well... it seems solid, I have to try more games, but I'm seriously considering to just not buy any more fat ps2s.
How is your experience playing games through ethernet in OPL? Is it really the second fastest option? (behind hard drive and ahead of memory card sd readers, DVDs and USB) or are the memory card sd readers and DVDs faster? How's compatibility, do double layer games work fine? Is it similar to hard drive compatibility?
