Can we have a retro controller thread?

Favourite controllers? Experiences with strange ones?

Found pic related in my garage earlier, the Microsoft Sidewinder Gamepad. I think theres a USB variant, but I could only find the DB-15 plug. Plugged into my retrogaming/emulation PC. I hear a lot of people give this controller shit, but I actually kind of like it.
The D-pad feels funny at first, but you get used to it. Actually good for shmups, was playing Giga Wing earlier with it, worked great.

Also, I love the Sega Saturn controller, although I honestly think its overrated.
Everyone on /vr/ says "best d-pad", and not that its bad, but its not incredible.
Even the Sega Megadrive D-Pad, although similar, feels a little better.

I miss serial ports. I know USB is the new Serial port, but serial ports were totally they for games. And yes I know they did other stuff, but like anyone used them for it. Hell they literally on some GPUs back then.

Nice as USB is serial always just worked with controllers and fucking joysticks, where the fuck did those go.

Xinput has made usb controllers too flakey damn xbox. I suddenly feel the need to buy a joystick.

>> No.948219

The XInput API pisses me off.

What the hell was wrong with DirectInput?
I suppose maybe latency issues or whatever, but that doesn't explain Microsoft's XInput implementation other than to make money selling Xbox for Windows controllers.

Too bad.
Microsoft actually used to make good controllers.
The majority of Sidewinder joysticks were excellent.

Are you talking about game ports? Those were typically on sound cards.
Serial ports were used for a variety of input as well as other stuff like null-modem cables.

I have one of these, and I find it perfectly serviceable.

The stiffness feels about right for playing NES titles.

Also, if you open it up the PCB is prime for pad-hacking. All the connections have a little labeled hole in the corner ready to be soldered.

Game ports were serial ports. And yes I was. Serial had a lot of variety, kinda a bad thing really. Technically VGA ports are serial ports too.

But yes I miss the damn things because despite being far poorer in ability and design then USB it didn't have Windows cocking it up to sell more of their products which are dick.

And I must go buy a joystick and play a space game to get rid of this nostalgia.

>> No.948291

I used to have the exact same controller. It was awesome for SNES and earlier, and was workable for n64(dpad mapped to joystick or dpad, depending on need, same with l button)

Also, I don't remember which way it went, but there was something else that used the same type of port as the game port, and plugging the wrong thing in the wrong port resulted in a fucked up sound card or controller. Like I said, don't remember which exactly.

Side note; A friend gave me a SNES controller a couple years back which I modified for use with a parallel port. Made playing games with ZSNES a lot more natural. However; A. No modern PC has a Parallel port, B. The website hosting the PP driver has since gone down, and C. I've now come into the posession of an old working SNES and I've got an urge to play it, but I can't because I severed the connector in the modification process.
Feels like I shot myself in the foot a decade ago, and I'm only now feeling it.

Along with the Famiclone in this thread >>949863 , I got a new controller during my Goodwill run today. The Gravis Eliminator Gamepad Pro (top). What looks like a D-Pad, is actually more of an analog pad, because you have that 360 degree movement like an analog stick, but it feels like a D-pad, so its insanely comfortable for games that utilize either/or an analog stick or a pad. Otherwise, control scheme is just like a PSX. Oh, and the grips have these little rubber strips surrounding them, making it comfortable to hold. Did I mention it was only $2?

Below is the controller I've been using on my modern PC. I'm OP, btw, using that Sidewinder on the retrogaming/emulation PC, which by the way I also saw a Goodwill today. I didn't pick it up because I forgot, I'll go back tomorrow. I doubt its going anywhere.

The mute-L and window-R buttons are actually the shoulder buttons moved to the face. The four buttons on the top row all do special Super Gameboy related things. The switch in the middle turns off the special Super Gameboy controls and turns it into a regular SNES controller, albeit with a weird layout. Oh, I see. Can't really agree with you, though. I love the Gravis PC pad and I still use it for DOS games and most of my simpler emulation needs, like NES, PCE, Mega Drive, etc., basically anything that doesn't require shoulder buttons.

However, I'm not a huge fan of those later models (the ones that imitated the Playstation design). I think that disc-shaped d-pad really does become uncomfortable when it's on a controller with handles.

Gravis Xterminator Dual Control

This had to be one of the last breeds of mega-joysticks before the concept died out.

I bought it cheap for $30.

As far as the performance is concerned:
-The lack of twisting on the stick is a real buzzkill.
-The stick itself was on the loose side and there is no way to adjust the tension.
-The left-hand fingertip/knuckle button combo setup is nice in theory, but awful in practice. Flattening your hand meant the knuckle buttons would be mashed by accident constantly; clawing the hand meant they were too far out of reach for fast application.
-The thumb pilot hat is too loose.
-The software is atrocious (especially with the lack of profiles) and Gravis didn't support this thing for shit.

As far as gaming is concerned:
-The stick is too clumsy for platformers
-The lack of twist made it useless for Mechwarrior
-Flyers played okay

At least it looked cool on the desk.

Honestly, I've never had any issues with the buttons. Pretty much my only (minor) complaint is the fact that the top of that screw-on joystick is unnecessarily deeply concave, which irritates my thumb after a while.

Aside from the top, how does the dpad thumbstick actually feel? Is it more precise than just having your thumb on the dpad? It's an interesting concept that you just don't see anymore.

>> No.960920

>>960859
I've always felt like it was much more precise, though this may very well be simply due to familiarity. I still play most games with the joystick screwed on.

I have a few other gamepads that have the exact same gimmick, by the way, a few for PC and one for the SNES. Some of them have much better (read: convex) and thicker sticks, but they usually suck in some other regard, which is why I ultimately prefer the Gravis pad.

Yeah, this was back before the day when things like ergonomics were even a concern for PC joystick design.

IMHO this is an admirable attempt at a controller, but it's still a complete mess. The body is using an XBox 360 form factor, which is fine, but then everything gets screwy.

360 Controllers have the left analog stick lower than the ABXY buttons. Not to mention the 360 ABXY buttons are in a different order (A is at the bottom, Y at the top). If I were to pick this controller up, my subconscious muscle memory (or whatever) would instantly (and incorrectly) associate the lowest button as A.

Also, why the analog sticks so far apart? Why is the D-Pad placed so far away from where your thumb would naturally rest? Why are is there two sets of Select and Start buttons? Why does it have PS player lights at the bottom? Are those built in speakers next to the analog sticks?

This is legitimately the worst controller I've ever used.

It is really awkward to hold, the d-pad feels awful, the analog stick is worst analog stick I've ever used, and the buttons feel awful. It's fucking terrible.

I honestly didn't think the N64 controller was that bad. But various manufacturers attempts at "fixing" it was just hilarious.

Also, why is it that so many controller manufactures can't make good d-pads? Why is it so hard? Why does everyone make mushy d-pads that barely move? Just copy the Genesis or the Saturn controllers d-pad or something.

Logitech makes some really good d-pads. Since they're basically just the same d-pad the Genesis controller had.

Not bad for emulation and other assorted gaming, even after all of this time. Probably will never get rid of it, since I've learned my lesson about selling video game stuff... Dammit...

>Logitech makes some really good d-pads.
Subjective, of course. I find them slightly inaccurate and clicky, with unnecessarily long travel. Even pressing down on the center accepts a very deep press, which is odd.

>Since they're basically just the same d-pad the Genesis controller had.
In looks, but not in feel or construction. They are really quite different. Open them both up some time. I like Sega's more.

Those of us who prefer Nintendo's d-pad learned with SF2 on the SNES. I always appreciated the low travel on them compared to Sega's, and diagonals were never a problem for me whatsoever.

I'm using XBOX 360 wired controller for PC and after 3-5 minutes plugged, it'll have yellow blink / constant yellow color on the big center X buttons.

And after that blinky accident, I have to remove and plug it again, otherwise any button that I press doesn't have any effect on the Emulator.

Anyone else has this problem ?

That's actually why I like the Logitech d-pads. I hate d-pads that don't much and give very little feedback.

And obviously it's not the exact same d-pad that the Genesis has, but I was reminded of it when I first used my logitech controller. It certainly is within the same "style" of d-pad.

I guess it depends on what you grew up with. I played my Genesis a whole lot more than my SNES. Had I preferred the SNES, I'd probably prefer that type of d-pad.

Not saying it's bad or anything. There's certainly far worse out there.

I dislike that too, but the NES/SNES/N64 d-pad is my ideal. As you say, it depends on what you grew up with.

The reason I don't like long-travel d-pads as much is because they are naturally slower to respond and can lead to inaccuracy (or even accidental presses) due to springiness. Repeated presses in the same direction, like double or triple taps, feel very strange. They are comfy as heck, I'll give them that.

I have the USB variant of this. It's nice except the DPad is completely unusable. Microsoft was cool back then. They released a whole line of controllers under the Sidewinder name and when USB became a thing they RELEASED ADAPTORS TO PLUG THEM INTO USB! I've also got a Sidewinder Precision Pro (Pic Related) and it is the best fucking flight stick I have ever used. It's Game Port with a USB adaptor so I can use it on my 98 machine too. Descent is fucking glorious with it. The stick rotates, and there are 9 buttons altogether: The trigger, 3 buttons at the top of the stick, 4 at the base, and one in front. Plus a 8 direction POV switch and throttle down there by the base of the stick.

I also own a Gravis flightstick too... Somethingbird? Ah whatever. It's a close second though it's pretty finicky.

OP here, actually got this stick a couple days ago. Would take pic, but camera is not playing nice. Love the rudder and POV hat. I wonder why there are only 9 pins yet it is a DB-15 connector.?

Saturn has the best shoulder buttons, ergonomics, and face buttons but I think the d-pad could be better. I can't really think of any retro controller that is just top notch, but the best d-pad I've used would probably be the PS Vita's.

>>977065
Actually, it's called a Gravis Thunderbird. It's basically an older Blackhawk. Pic related.

Yeah, the 9 pins thing confused me too. I had bought mine at a rummage sale and the thing was very finicky at day 1 so I was worried the pins had fallen out. It works fine now.

Here's a little tip I found out the other day: If your joystick is a little jittery, the Wingman Team has a utility that hijacks the raw input and gives modified values for directinput. It lets you set dead zones and modify the maximum and minimum possible values for each axis.

I had no idea so many other people preferred directinput over Xinput! Fight the power!

From memory (no consoles with me right now), GBP through GBA use the same type of d-pad as NES/SNES/N64, but smaller. Original GB d-pad was full-sized and identical to those of the home consoles. GCN was the first and only to adopt the GBP-sized d-pad, and Wii introduced a newer design that was softer to the touch but reminiscent of the NES in function, as well as fully-sized again.

Back before USB was a thing, I remember seeing a controller that plugged into the PS/2 keyboard plug. It came in a gamepad layout and there was also an arcade stick model.

It was basically a keyboard emulator in controller form. The end of the cord plugged into the PS/2 port and then had a pass-through for your actual keyboard to plug into. The controller itself had a control pad (which mapped to the arrow keys), six buttons on the face (which I think mapped to "Enter" "PageUp" "PageDown" "Home" "End" "Insert" and "Delete"), two triggers on top (mapped to the "L" and "R" keys), and a Start button in the middle (mapped to "Enter").

Really basic stuff by today's standards, but it was one of the only non-Gravis means of getting a console pad on PC at the time. The neat thing about it was that, since it worked as a keyboard and mapped all the inputs to keyboard keys, it worked with every single game including the ones that didn't have controller support. Remember, this was before USB and OS-level input device management made things easy.

By the time it dawned on me how good this thing was, I couldn't find it again, and I never remembered the name of the controller or the company that made it. Never saw it again, and never managed to find anything on the Internet to prove that it ever existed.

The whole concept of that controller (and the NES Max) is flawed. With a d-pad you can press up-left without moving your thumb all the way to the upper-left, you just press the d-pad in that direction. With those, you do have to move your thumb there. Dumb.

>>979148

Hi I'm >>977532 and >>977049 and maybe I should start namefagging just for this thread.

This kind of controller really interests me. L and R seem like weird buttons to map to though, since most action buttons were closer to the right side of the keyboard. (A, S, D were popular for arcade-style games like Blackthorne and Z, X was nice for small games.) Guess they were hoping for the games to have mappable controls instead? Eh. I guess you couldn't complain since Arrow Keys + Space is broad enough.

Well against my better judgement I have bought >>963497 (Gravis Gamepad Pro) and the reviews are in, as that thumb joystick was just too interesting to pass up.

First of all it isn't very comfortable because it's like a too small DualShock controller. Face buttons have a little too much travel, but the shoulder buttons are nice and clicky.

Interesting part is the d pad though. It's strange because it feels sort of soft and mushy like a Playstation d pad, but with much more pronounced feedback from the notches where the d pad settles in. Also it seems like notches for the diagonals are easier to land in than the cardinal directions, which is annoying.
The stick actually does give you quite a bit more control, and it is comfortable to use. I thought it would be too awkward having my thumb up that high but it isn't. Your thumb does want to slip off though, might have to modify it somehow so it doesn't do that. Also the screw inside the joystick is made of plastic, which might be one reason why the joystick is actually kind of hard to find, either it breaks or people lose it.

TL;DR because no one cares, don't recommend this controller in particular but the screw in thumb joystick makes it too interesting and fun to pass up.
