I can't think of a single console add-on that wasn't a failure, were there any successes? Pic related was just stupid, there was what, 2 games that required it?

The n64 expansion pack was one of the better add ons, it came bundled with dk64 so it was relatively cheap. Most games could make optional use of it.(although most did resort to the lame higher res mode)
Some games did add something extra not possible with the base system i.e. SFR2049.
The games that absolutely require it did do stuff not possible otherwise (Majora's mask)

Three games REQUIRE the expansion pak to play them.

Otherwise you're locked into playing just the multiplayer stages with bots.

On a side note my friend lent me Perfect Dark in 2000 and after I returned it he asked how I liked it, I said "yeah it's pretty cool, like the Goldeneye multiplayer stages but pretty boring otherwise", he was incensed that I didn't have the expansion pack and hadn't played the actual main game, I never even knew that it existed (the expansion pack). I figure I would throw my hat (opinion) into this conversation. I bought the network adapter and a FFXI HDD somewhere around 2004 I believe. Honestly, I used it a lot and have very fond memories with the service and games. Off the top of my head, I played Final Fantasy XI, Resident Evil Outbreak and File 2, Metal Gear Solid 3 online (and downloaded camo online with the original game), Metal of Honor Rising Son, Killzone, XIII, Mortal Kombat Deception and a little bit of SOCOM. I think the HDD was extremely underused and that might have been the main reason Sony axed its capability with the slim PS2. It also think it might be a valid with possibility (though, I have nothing to back this up with) Sony might have had some serious security concerns. I honestly don’t know. I do think the online capabilities were pretty great for time, all things considered for a free service launched in 2000. Now the HDD was completely squandered on all levels. I honestly only used it for FFXI and RE Outbreak. That’s downright criminal. I ever heard a good chunk of hardcore SOCOM fans bought the HDD just for maps, if I remember correctly.

That think that is mostly likely the case, but I do think they could have come up with a solution for everyone who already bought into the HDD ecosystem. It could have helped out a lot of games and some games are downright built around the HDD. RE Outbreak is almost unplayable without one because of the massive load times and it’s primarily an online game. I wouldn't have minded some weird cable to connect the HDD outside the console itself. I can imagine many more developers would have taken advantage of the HDD, if it wasn't basically killed off a few years after it was released.

Games needed to include drivers for the HDD to utilize it, and if every developer was ordered to put in HDD support for saving and loading, they'd probably also use it for caching, and maybe other exclusive features, and it could've reached a point where not having the HDD significantly crippled your enjoyment of PS2 games; they'd have to start bundling it with every console, making the console more expensive to manufacture and distribute.
Or in short, the HDD made things more expensive and complicated, so they didn't really want to promote it for more than the handful of games that required it.

Sega's devs were more interested in supporting GameCube early on because they were bitter about PS2's part in killing the Dreamcast. More practically, PS2 was weaker in certain areas that made porting Dreamcast games to it difficult and required compromises. GameCube wasn't free of this either, but it tended to be less drastic.
PSO's devs probably wanted to focus on one version of the game and one player base for it, at least for a start. And they were already working on new content for Dreamcast they could no longer release on it, so they had to jump ship somewhere, and PC would've filtered out a lot of people, so it had to be another console. Dreamcast's dead, you hate PS2, Xbox doesn't exist yet...it has to be GameCube.

Yes, sell directly N64 with 8mo cost more than an original N64.
But sell separately with packaging for console and another packaging for E.P. cost more than one packaging for N64 + E.P.

Make that from 2000, all the N64 sold are equipped with 8mb that will encourage the developers to use it more.

It's like games that are playable with 4 players on Dreamcast, Gamecube or Xbox, but only with 2 players on Ps2 because you have to buy the multipad separately.

Because it's literally just the AGB hardware in an adapter for compatibility reasons. Which means that just like the GBA, it doesn't have any SGB shit in it. People need to get over it. SGB borders were not that good.

It just had a decent campaign mode.

Gameplay wise, it was Goldeneye with a female protagonist and a cyberpunk setting.

The game also has some of the worst performance running at less than 30fps. It's so bad, the PAL version is recommended since it actually runs at a stable (25) fps meant for PAL tv's.

I remember when the GameCube was about to come out, I saw a picture of the GBA connected to the GC using the link cable that would come out later, and I assumed it meant you could use the GBA as an extra controller, and maybe even allow you to play GBA games on your TV through the GameCube. Shame that it just ended up being a huge gimmick that only two games utilized to its fullest potential, not to mention the fact that each of your friends had to have both a GBA and the cable.

I always thought it was a huge missed oppurtunity by nintendo to not just make the GBA Link cable use the came connector as Gamecube controllers. It would have made all that GBA/GC connectivity so fucking easy.
