GBA doesn't hold a candle to SNES. They're good for a replay at least. The only exception would probably be Super Mario Advance, since it is basically Nintendo upping Super Mario Bros 2 to a real mario entry instead of an obscure romhack made for the USA, it is the GBA's mainline Mario title. They were attempting to replace SMB2 for the NES.

>> No.9469336

No. Mario 3 is the closest since it fine-tunes some mechanics (for example bringing shells through pipes), but the audio still sucks.
Some people don't even consider the All-Stars versions to replace the NES ones.

What the fuck are you guys smoking? The only thing sma1 added were:
>useless score nobody cares about
>extra health and mushrooms everywhere so the game is now piss easy
>random extra enemies added randomly
>random enemies replaced with large enemies
>some graphical enhances to showcase gbas capabilities like sprite rotation etc
>annoying voice clips
>nerfed toads run speed

And the actually good things they added:
>5 A-coins in each level
>Yoshi Challenge mode
>R button being dedicated run button separate from the B button which can be used as grab/throw button if you use R as run button
>you can now change characters if you die in level
>new boss

Not to mention the overly bright colors/palette and screen crunch which makes it worse by default. And overall its the same game. SMA4 is the one that actually got good upgrade and new stuff with the e-reader stuff.

Because US SMB2 isn't a real Mario game. It's considered the 5th Mario game in its home country, like some little shovelware. SMA1 is a proper introduction as the mainline title on the GBA, and the definitive version of this game by Nintendo. If one would revise the mainline titles, lost levels would be SMB2 and US "SMB2" would be better fit as SMA on the Mario catalogue.

>> No.9470208

>bright colors/palette
Not if you play a Virtual Console release or on original hardware.
>screen crunch
They tweaked the levels for SMA1, so that's not an issue at all. There could be some minor issues, but not nearly as bad as in SMB Deluxe or SMA2-4 (minus e-Reader levels for the latter).

The first one is unique and worth playing if you want an easy version of SMB2 with some new things added. Plus funny voice clips.
SMW isn't really worth dealing with the screen crunch and fart music. Only new thing is Luigi floaty mechanics. Also a new cutscene at the beginning, and another one after completing the Special Zone.
Yoshi's Island adds 6 new levels after beating the game, so that might be worth it.
SMB3 adds a bunch of new levels and mechanics, but you need the e-reader/e-cards or cheats to access them.

Super Mario Advance 4 is objectively the best version of SMB3. It has 32 brand new levels. These are long, full-fledged levels that are some of the best in the game. That's about 33% more content than the original SMB3 game. If you play the Virtual Console version, all the new levels are playable from the start.

No. In fact, I would say that the Mario Advance games are obsolete nowadays because of how mainstreamed emulation has become compared to twenty years ago. You can play the originals (NES and SNES versions alike) without screen crunch or subpar music, and you can play them on anything from your PC, Switch or even your phone. Hell you could boot em up on a smart fridge if you're feeling cheeky.
But even when the Mario Advance games were new, they did not make obsolete the originals or their All-Star remakes because people didn't really have their old consoles or old Mario games on hand or in working condition. We weren't dropping All-Stars for Mario Advance; we just didn't have widespread access to All-Stars like today. Emulation existed but wasn't as popular or as good as now. Maybe that's because PC compatible controllers were still kind of a rarity then. Now you can use just about any modern console controller on your PC or get a cheap USB controller from Amazon. I mean, yeah in 2005 you could have gotten an USB controller and be in emulation heaven, but people weren't really doing that back then outside of really dedicated gamers.
It's still worth it to play through the SMA4: SMB3 if only because of the e-Reader stuff, most of which we did not get in America back then.

Some people liked the keyboard controls, especially for RPGs and stuff like that, but I remember a common gripe being that playing platformers with a keyboard wasn't nearly as good as a controller. I still played a lot of fast-paced NES and SNES games that way back then though because I was just so hungry to play all these games I missed out on in the 90s.

No. Sort of the other way around: you can emulate All-Stars + World and SMW2 at any time on almost any device so there's no reason to keep playing inferior versions of them that have lower resolution and JUST WHAT I NEEDED. Only thing that keeps the Super Mario Advance series from being totally replaced is there's some e-Reader content in the SMB3 remake that makes it worth a try.

Something interesting that RetroAchievements introduced me to.
One of the e-cards in SMA4 activates a hard mode that gives you only 2 hits, like SMB1 and SMW; doubles boss health; converts all Koopas into Buzzy Beetles or Spinies, and also converts all Piranha Plants into the fire-breathing kind.
It makes certain levels like 7-8 brutally difficult unless you just fly over this part

Wendy is also very challenging, you have to jump on her 6 times while her 3 projectiles are flying around.
