Just beat Streets of rage 4, and I really like it. Looking for retro bumps to try out. Gonna try Battletoads for arcade next.

Play SOR 1 and 2 and then Bareknuckle. You need to avoid the western release so you want Japanese version of SOR.

Could I get some recommendations on some more obscure Beat em’ ups? Also, are any of the newer ones worth picking up? Normally I avoid new games and asking for them on /vr/, but the people here also hold games to a higher standard.

definitely try the 2 dungeons and dragons games and alien vs predator arcade

Cadillacs and Dinosaurs and Aliens vs Predator are probably the best in the genre, but anything by 90's era Capcom for the cps1 and cps2 arcade systems will be good. They were the kings

Check out Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom if you want to play a really polished, well-made game. Start with the fighter to learn the game. Watch this video for tips. Save the elf for last because she's overall the weakest character in the game.

Fight N Rage is universally agreed to be based. Most based beat em up in recent years.

The English version of Streets of Rage 3 fucked with the game. Censored a fag gag boss. Shit like that. I also think it's harder though.

Theres an English fan patch of the Japanese version. Google it and play that.

Okay so, English patch streets of rage 3, 2 dungeons and dragons games, alien vs predator, Violent storm, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Bad dudes, and for newer Fight N Rage. Okay thanks anons

What is that one beat em up with the 6 buttons like a fucking fighter? Crazy moveset.

And you can also take mind control of some of the ENEMYS and use their health bar. That one does not get the attention it deserves.

Could I get some tips for SoR3? I beat 1 and 2 just fine but 3 is absolutely wrecking me. I can’t even get past the second level.

First, I'd recommend a 6-button controller if you don't have one. Second try to dash by double tapping the d-pad.

You really should just play the Japanese version of the third game if you have the option. The difficulty was massively increased when the game was released here and it basically ruined the experience. The original Bare Kunckle 3 was way easier to get through and honestly a lot more fun to play

>> No.9465251

>>9463975
The second level is actually one of the harder levels because of the 2 boss fights. Those bosses fight like pussies with their constant back hopping and shit. If you're playing the JAP version, they're a total pushover. Just do dash attacks or whatever. If you're playing the US version, use your specials more for the i-frames. Specials drain much less energy in the US version, so you can abuse them more.

Sounds like I should play the nip version for the “normal mode” and revisit the US version for the hard mode later. I realized the importance of the specials pretty early as it’s basically what the double tap attack was in SoR2, and the fact that stage 2 is the hardest actually makes me feel a little better. Getting there isn’t too bad, but that boss fight is tough. Definitely feels more balanced for 2 players.

Also
>American version is harder
Oh how the times have changed.

>> No.9465271

you're probably going to be disappointed by a lot of the genre if you're coming to it from SoR4, outside of SoR2 and 3, and the latter final fight entries not many games really had those features, just having a screen crush was about all most of them had.

>> No.9465315

>>9465260
You can beat the Japanese version on the hardest difficulty without a problem by spamming dash attacks smartly. Especially with Zan. Stay on the bottom of the screen and spam dash attacks (blitzes) with him. His upgraded blitzes normally have a dumb zigzag movement that is detrimental, but if you stay on the bottom of the screen, there's no more zigzag, and it becomes game-breaking (at least on the Japanese version). Or you can pick Blaze and spam her jump kick, but maneuver her in the air so that the very tip of her toe hits the enemy. That move pretty much nullifies anything in the game (Japanese version).

Earlier I said to use specials for the i-frames on the level 2 bosses (US version), but you should know that Blaze's forward special doesn't have any i-frames. Zan's forward special does. If you want an easy way to beat the Mona Lisa fight, pick Zan, and wait for Mona/Lisa/both to land from a jump and blast them with his forward special. It has amazing reach and i-frames so you will nullify anything they do. Just don't do it when they're doing their ground fireball attack because THEY have i-frames. If you just know when bosses have i-frames you can nullify everything else they do with Zan's forward special.

Awesome!! Those are some very useful tips! Not gonna be home for a couple days, but I’m sure they’ll help a lot (you the anon who shared those Golden Axe tips with me by any chance?)

I kinda wanna keep with the US version as I tend to dig the difficulty, but I’ll see how hard I get filtered after level 2. So far it might be my favorite in the series as I love the absurdity of some of the enemies.

Streets of Rage Japanese version is so much better than the American version, i couldn't get past the 6th stage in the NA version but in the JP version i reached the final stage and died, will have to practice the bosses since that what caused the end of my run.
i know this is off topic but how is the modern beat em' ups?

I think it’s mostly agreed upon that SoR4 and Fight N Rage are the two that do the genre the most Justice from the modern era. I feel like the argument could be made that Sifu is a 3d beat ‘em up, but it could also just be classified as an action game. But it shares a lot of similarities. River City Girls has a bit of a following, but it’s mostly due to the characters and not the gameplay. I also don’t know how long Wayforward can hold back the woke from their work as a lot of their vocal “””fans””” are constantly pushing them to implement the aspects into games that sent some of us back to retro in the first place.
