Overlooked PS1 games, preferably RPGs. I've gone through the oft-mentioned classics (Xenogears, FF, Chrono Cross, Grandia) and would like to know about some other classics that aren't named in every top ten list. Thanks!

In the case of RPGs, anyone not able to read Japanese is definitely missing out.

I started studying Japanese 10 years ago and can now read novels, etc. without a dictionary, but it's a long road. I'd still recommend it to any hardcore game fans because of the massive number of games you can now play.

Llygamyn Saga and New Age of Llygamyn are nice then.

Also, Ungra Walker and Battle Hunter.

Battle Hunter is so low budget it hurts sometimes but the game principle is rather solid.

UngraWalker is similar to stuff like Azure Dreams but

I am literally in tears right now OP.

I finally found IT.

PIC FUCKING RELATED.

When this game came out I was just a wee laddy (6), and this was my first PS1 RPG after playing Breath of Fire on the SNES.

I could never remember the title until just now searching for it again because of your thread. It has taken me the better portion of 10 years since remembering where I got stuck in this game, to recall the title, since I had only rented it.

So I give to you a true gem of mine, memories I've held very close (I played this while my mom was in the hospital, pregnant with my twin sisters), so I had a lot of memories surrounded by this title. This and Star Gladiator, as well as a couple cartoon movies, were rented by my dad for me, since they were leaving me in the care of my grandma.

I'm so happy this thread helped me find this game. I give you my favorite PS1 RPG due to immense nostalgia.

Beyond the Beyond.

>>945891
Never considered it a rpg, and honestly the "humor" in the game irked me for some reason.

>>945892
Some people like this one, and to me it was one of the worst jrpgs ever made. I never liked the "one dungeon one town" games, though. Plus the fact that you go down to level 1 each time to leave was just fucking stupid.

>>945901
I loved this game when I first played it. Only later did I see just how bare bones and pretty shallow the game was. Reds, and that Robot guys story were good though, some of the other characters sucked(Lute for instance had no business of even having a story line)

>>945996
I really wanted to like this game, but it just seems like too much effort for little to no payback. I played the campaign with that ice guy, and it lasted for quite a bit, repetitive the further it went along and when I got to the end, there was no real conclusion that made it seem worthwile to play through.

>>946020
Vandal Hearts was awesome. Really an overlook tactical rpg.

>>946101
This one counts as retro? I swear it's like it was yesterday that I played this one. Or did I mix it up with the one on the GBA?

>>946102
Good game, but the fights took forever. That is fine for boss battles(the fights against those three guys that you had to fight one on one were really good) but it's just annoying in random encounters.

Star Ocean: The Second Story. A great game, although it has a ludicrously tough final boss. You know how you postpone the final fight in your RPGs so you can go around and find all the extra stuff? Doing that is pretty much mandatory in SO2 if you want to beat it. Still a great game with good replay value.

Can anyone tell me some general "good or bad" qualifiers for these games my brother recently picked up?

Threads of Fate (Squaresoft, PS1)
Alundra 2 (sort-of Climax Ent., PS1)
SaGa Frontier 2 (Squaresoft, PS1)

SaGa Frontier 2 is pretty cool so far, and I have a sneaking suspicion that the first Alundra is better (though I love the goofy VA), and don't know anything about Threads of Fate.

Threads of Fate is pretty good. You choose between two characters and each has his own story to go through. Male character is darker, while the woman has more light hearted moments.

Alundra 2 is a travesty of a game that has nothing to do with the first one. Hell, even without anything to do with it, it's awful.

Saga Frontier 2 is okay. I liked the first one more, personally, but I find people that enjoy the second one more exist, and I can see why as well. Gustaves story is awesome, and the rest of the game is so so.

It's such a shame what happened with this game. I like Alundra a lot. if they did the right thing it could have become a franchise that rivals anything Zelda but Alundra 2 didn't even have the old Alundra elf dude to play as.

re: Alundra 2

Well, I think I might tell him to stick with Threads of Fate and SaGa Frontier 2. After the cat boss we sort of saw how the game's controls are going to get in the way of actually enjoying the game. The best part is that your attacks slide you into the boss, doing damage to yourself each time you hit.

it's a real shame because the localization is nice and goofy - they were clearly trying to ape Working Designs, which is not a bad thing at all.

Hoshigami is definitely worth a playthrough, if only because its one of the few SRPGs ever made where the developers sole intention was to kick you in the dick. Its very rare to not feel like a weak piece of shit in that game, and nearly every map is stacked against you.

Star Ocean 2 is a fantastic game, with a deeper crafting system than the shitty Atelier games of the time that revolved around it, and a combat system that made spamming one move over and over more fun than you ever thought possible. I always felt like it was what Tales games should have been.
